Hi, I read your postings-- can't help with the Chaplain line. I do have a Chapman line (from NJ, then Cincinnati, then St. Louis, and finally outside Washington, IN, in Daviess CO). My ggg grandmother was Mary "Polly" Chapman who married Aaron Goodwin in champaign CO., OH. He fifth child (out of six) was Achsah Goodwin, b. abt 1910 in Veale Twp, Daviess Co., IN-- Axie md George Washington Crabtree in 1839 in Posey CO., IN. It is some of the Crabtrees that I am pulling my gray hairs with. I have GW's lineage, but there is a Phoebe Crabtree that I cannot put with a family. This Phoebe (there are two) was b. Aug 24, 1825 and d. Jan 27, 1894. She married John Saulman in 1842 in Edwards CO., IL. She and John are buried in the Saulman Cem in Gibson CO., IN (near Stewartsville in Posey CO). By process of elimination I think she is a daughter of John H. Crabtree and his second wife-- Elizabeth Gale Bevins. John H. is a brother to William Crabtree-- father of GW Crabtree. In 1850 John and Phoebe Crabtree Saulman are two numbers from John H. Crabtree (Robb Twp, Posey CO); 1860 John and Phoebe are living in Montgomery Twp, Gibson CO; 1870 Phoebe is widowed, living in Montgomery Twp, Gibson CO--neighbors to Phoebe were Ann Crabtree Hollen (spouse Bartlet Hollen); 1880 census of same place has Phoebe living with a son, John R. Saulman. Other info I do have on Phoebe-- she has a daughter named Elizabeth; Fanny, invalid dau of John and Elizabeth Bevins Crabtree, was living in the hh of Elizabeth Johnson in 1880-- Elizabeth John was the d/o Phoebe and John Saulman-- this would make Fanny a probable aunt of Elizabeth Johnson. Also there are some trees that have this 1825 Phoebe belonging to a John Crabtree of Edwards CO., IL, this John died before 1850. The only link to this John Crabtree that I can see is Phoebe and John Saulman's marriage in Edwards CO., IL. All the other censuses do have Phoebe in Posey and Gibson Counties, living near John H. Crabtree. Guess this is a lot of information for a Sunday morning. I have checked at both Posey and Gibson Counties for a death record on Phoebe-- there is none. And even if I were to find one, I am sure it would have the familiar "unknown" listed for the parents of Phoebe. Can anyone help with this Phoebe? Her dad could be the John Crabtree in Edwards CO-- I just don't know. The 1830 census of Posey CO for John H. Crabtree does have what could be a Phoebe in the 2 females, ages 5-10; And in the 3 Fem, ages 15-20 in 1840. And the Edwards CO., IL, 1830 census has what could be a Phoebe with John Crabtree in the 2 fem (0-5). Can anyone help on this mystery of many, many years?
