When a boy of 10, he with his parents moved to southern Illinois., where his parents soon died. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Eleanor Williamson in 1842, who died May 13, 1902. On October 30, 1905, he was again united in marriage to Mrs. Susan Brown, of Sacramento, California, she dying in Kansas City, Kansas, March 22, 1908. Since that time he made his home with his children. May 1, 1879, he started overland with his family for the west, stopping first in eastern Nebraska, and then coming on to Phillips County, Kansas, arriving in Logan on July 6, 1879. He served in the Union army 3 years and 6 months. He was converted in early life and joined the M. E. church of which organization he was a member at death. Funeral services were taken in charge by the Masonic lodge and the funeral sermon preached in the M. E. church by Rev. Ryder, assisted by Elder H. P. Clark, on May 23. Interment was made in the new cemetery. Mr. Craven was one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens and leaves to mourn his departure besides many friends, five sons and two daughters--J.C., J. W., and Ira of Logan, H. G., Mrs. R. S. Palmer and Mrs. Chas Gunther of Oberlin, aand J. N. Craven of Jewell City, all of whom were present at the funeral.
