Since the courthouse fire in 1886 destroyed all Wayne County vital records prior to that time, these old newspapers constitute one of the few available sources for that period. I was able to document the marriage of my 2nd great grandparents from an 1864 issue of the War Democrat, and I found several helpful obituaries. I made a trip to Springfield to do my research, but if that is infeasible, interlibrary loan would be the next best thing. Guy I. Colby IV Irving, TX
