In the Clay county section mention of Joel Yancy Rhodes who taught school, 1840s. "Joel Y. Rhodes, one of the early teachers was a famous scholar, a descendant of one of the best Old Virginia families, but he was a confirmed drunkard and a dangerous man; he made himself infamous by beating his scholars in a brutal manner, and for brutality exercised in his own family, for which latter offense he was sent to the penitentiary for ten years. He had been two years in the penitentiary of Indiana for killing a man. He afterward returned to this country, but wandered off, no one knew whither and no one cared."
