    1. [ILWAYNE-L] Destroyed and neglected Cemeteries
    2. Elaine Suhre
    3. Hello, My relatives on my Dad's side came from Wayne Co. IL. During the few years I have been researching my family, I have been shocked to find how many of the Cemeteries in Wayne Co. are neglected, if not destroyed. Thank goodness some of these cemeteries that are now on Private Property have been given the respect and care the grave sites of our ancestors deserve, but others have been completely destroyed. I have been particulary happily impressed by the little Cemetery known as DAY CEMETERY. It sits almost in the back yard of a family now presently living on, or owning, the acres surrounding it. I don't know the owner's names. And I don't know who is responsible for the upkeep of the Cemetery. But my heartfelt thanks is said each time I go there. It gives me such a feeling of peace know that the resting place of my GGGrandmother Holly Ann BUTLER, her second spouse, Abram YOUNG, with their children and many other relatives are protected on this little plot of land. I am ever so grateful for this. Other areas in the county are not as fortunate. At one time in my family there was a family burial plot known as POTTER's PLOT. Apparently a branch of the family owned this and the acreage around it. The Plot has now been totally destroyed, although there may be stones that may still be found at some future time scattered throughout the property. In 1983 when my Aunt Phyllis TICE SHELTON found the plot, there were only three stones that could still be seen. And these weren't standing, they were lying on the ground. Has there ever been an attempt to restore any of Wayne Counties cemeteries? Or an effort to try to keep the neglect at bay. Or keep the farmers in the area from plowing over the family plots?? Thanks. Elaine Suhre
