Hi, Maggie McLin, born 17 May 1864, died 1909. She is buried in Thomas Prairie Cemetery, Marion Co. IL Maggie married in 1898, Wayne County, Illinois James A. Burroughs, son of Edward Burroughs and his second wife, Cynthia (Smith) Waller Burroughs. Does anyone know who Maggie's parents were or what became of her children: Mary, Edward or Melvin? Thanks for any help you can provide. Lois Branch

Hi, Could I ask that one of you absolutely wonderful people who are close to the Wayne County Library to do an obituary look up for me? The problem on one is that I do not have an exact date. I'm not sure how 'busy' the newspapers were at this time, but if it's possible to find a date and an obit, I would be very grateful! I'm seeking an obit for a John White, who died in 1860 and was a resident in Fairfield. He left behind his second wife, Francis, who died (if my date is correct) July 16, 1868. Any further information on the above would be greatly appreciated! Hello Wayne County Researchers When I was back in Wayne County in 2001, I met with the trustees for Thomason Cemetery near Wayne City. They were very cooperative and allowed me to scan in their journal of all purchases of lots at the cemetery. They also let me copy their plat map of where people are buried. The maps are very large ("D" size) and I've had trouble trying to figure out how to post them on the website. I have posted a link to the information I got from their journals of who purchased lots. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwayne/cem/thomason/Thomason-Cemetery-Plot-Purchase-Records3.html Sometimes it was hard to figure out the journal because people traded lots or resold them to someone else. Now, question for you. If you see members of your family on the lot sales records but know they were never buried at Thomason, could you let me know? I would like to help the trustrees out. There are plots that were purchased but never used and those lots get left empty while their is more demand for space to bury people. They have been unable to contact family members of some of these "empty" lots and would like to talk to family members to decide what to do about these lots. -- Sandy (Whalen) Bauer http://www.whalen-family.org "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Champagne in one hand - strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO - What a Ride!"
Lois -- Bingo! Let me see if I can lay this out for you: First of all, there is a typo in your item from the Wayne County Press -- your Mrs. Alice WALKER is actually Mrs. Alice WALLER. She was the daughter of James R. and Mary J. BECK. In the 1880 census for Lamard twp, Wayne County, their family includes: James R. BECK, age 44 Mary J. BECK, age 46 Jeptha B. BECK, age 18 Hester A. BECK, age 17 Nancy BECK, age 14 Sherman BECK, age 12 Soloman [sic] BECK, age ?? Evidently, Alice was already out of the household and on her own (married?) by 1880. In the 1900 census, Mary BECK (age 67) and her sons Sherman and Solomon appear on the census for Elkhart, Logan County, Illinois. Sherman and Solomon are both listed as barbers. Now -- how does this family tie in to the BURROUGHS? Well, it's a little convoluted, but here's the way it works: 1) Alice BECK married Amos WALLER, the older step brother of James A. BURROUGHS. 2) Hester Ann BECK, Alice's younger sister, married Nathan E. MILLER, who was the older brother of my great grandfather, Oliver Perry Morton MILLER. Oliver married Fannie Amanda ALLEN, who was the daughter of Mehetable "Hettie" C. BURROUGHS, the older half sister of James A. BURROUGHS. In the 1884-1886 time frame, the entire MILLER clan removed from Wayne County to Logan County -- lock, stock, and barrel! Amos and Alice WALLER and their family also made the move shortly thereafter. Therefore, according to your 1896 letter, James A. Burroughs went from Wayne County to Logan County to live with his step brother's family. However, his sister-in-law, Alice WALLER, was also the sister of the wife of his niece's brother-in-law! Got that? To add to the confusion, Maude WALLER, the second child of Amos and Alice WALLER, married George Thomas MILLER, the son of Nathan's and Oliver's older brother, William J. MILLER. When these folks talked about the extended family, they really meant extended! As always, Guy I. Hi, everybody -- I'll throw in my two cents worth, based on admittedly limited personal experience. I have not used Genealogy.com, but I am familiar with HeritageQuest and Ancestry.com, and I have used the films at my not-so-local FHC (18 mile drive one way). I do not have an Ancestry.com subscription, but I can go over to my local public library (2œ miles away) and use their subscription for free all day long. There are a lot of microfilmed records available via rental at the FHC that simply are not to be had through any of the commercial subscription services. The tradeoff is that access is not always convenient -- the distance (as in my case) may be considerable, the hours are limited, and the ordering process is cumbersome (you can view the catalogue at home on the FamilySearch site, but the only way you can order is to go to the FHC in person -- they won't take phone orders). Plus, there is nothing more annoying than waiting a week and a half for a film, only to find out that it doesn't contain what you wanted -- you pay your $3.25, send it back, and wait another week and a half for the next one! For census records, I much prefer the commercial services -- all of them show you actual images, so you don't have to worry about transcription errors (just the errors made by the original census enumerator!). Be sure to go to the image itself -- the data as summarized in the search results are often incorrect! HeritageQuest is very convenient -- I access it at home via my local public library website. I like the way it loads, and it's easy to move around on the image. However, from the standpoint of content, it is far inferior to Ancestry.com -- some censuses are simply not available, and others are not indexed for all locations. Moreover, only heads of households are indexed. Ancestry.com is much more complete and much better indexed, but it is harder to use -- as several list members have pointed out, the image is awkward to manipulate. However, if you have the Ancestry Plus subscription (my public library does), there is a plug-in you can download to make zooming and scanning more convenient. Remember that in order to view the 1880 census images, you have to go through the FamilySearch website -- you can't get there directly on Ancestry.com. Hope this helps, Guy I. Colby IV Irving, TX
I also have both Genealogy.com and Ancestry. I like them both, but you MUST have a first name when searching on Genealogy.com, and I agree with the other Lister who said it is time consuming to sift thru the hits. I have spoken to Genealogy.com and asked that they consider adding a more concise search engine. They say they are working on it.....On Ancestry you can narrow down searches by area, date, etc. You can't really do that on Genealogy.com. I feel that I need both for complete searches. Considering what it costs in time, gas and parking to go to the State and National Archives, I think both of them are a bargain. Laurel in Colorado -------------- Original message --------------

Just another option or thoughts. I rent the LDS original census microfilms for a small amount at the Family History Centers and read the original photgraphed census records myself. I do not trust transcribed census, there are usually mistakes in the transcriptions. When I can't read a word etc. I trace the microfilm screen image on thin paper and am usually able to figure it out later. Watch how each census taker of each census you read writes each letter, it gives clues to help in reading the films also. I currently have Ancestry.com and have utilized Genealogy.com. I would say that it all depends on what your searching needs are. I, myself prefer Ancestry.com over Genealogy.com because I think their records are so much easier to search, in terms as being able to narrow searches down. Genealogy.com does have a lot to offer (though I've never found anything I need there), but their records do not have ways to narrow searches and is tedious to take hours and hours going through a particular name in a particular state. That is unless you are lucky enough to have a less common name to work with! As far as the Census goes, you almost need both Genealogy and Ancestry. Because what Ancestry is missing (such as 1900 and 1910) Genealogy will have. Their Census indexes also seem to be opposite of each other. But over all I prefer Ancestry over Genealogy. Sandy, I have both Ancestry & Genealogy. I like the census records better at Genealogy because of how they load on the screen, easier to read and print. I have found references on Ancestry that just gave a date and then I went to Genealogy and got a copy of the record. So, guess it's a toss up!! From Darlene in Kansas
