Yes, I'm still confused, but hopefully, beginning to make some sense of this. <g> The legal description of at least one 1837 purchase of land for my Jacob RISTER, says (i hope this is right): Section 24, 2N/8E. Which, to me....Looks like it's in Elm Township on the western border of Erie, and just northeast of Elm Creek. Can anyone confirm this or correct me? I'm all over this Wayne County map! TIA! Kin

I see an Abram RISTER listed on the 1855 state census abstract, page 17, about 8 families above one of a couple Koontz families. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwayne/f13-18.htm (btw: I also note S. WILSON at bottom of that page) Before I invest in LDS films which may not be related to my line: Might it be reasonable to believe that this page is in Fairfield? The online abstract doesn't identify cities, towns or villages? I tried to cross-reference with the '65 census, but all I find is a W.H. RISTER in Big Mound, Twp. I'm so confused! I looked at the 1875 atlas township map, but am still going in circles, trying to find my scattered ancestral traces. It looks to me, like Fairfield straddles both Big Mound and Barn Hill Townships. Is that correct? My appreciation to Dana Hill for the abstracts & to you, Dianna, for your hard work as county coordinator and list mom--quite especially in consideration of your extra challenges! What an inspiration! Thanks for any help! Kin - [email protected] yahoo .com

I too wish the cemeteries were online. Maybe we could start an effort to get volunteers together to walk the cemeteries and photograph the gravestones like they've done in Jefferson County. I took lots of pictures at Thomason Cemetery (near Wayne City), Salem (Davis-Mateer) Cemetery and Farnsworth (Mt. Zion) cemetery when I was back there over Labor Day last year. I plan on spending a week this Labor Day going back to the cemeteries and taking more pictures. Anyone else interested in starting this project? Lois and others, I'm wondering what County records exist from before November 1886, when the Wayne County Courthouse was burned. <sigh> I would think those records would clarify what isn't easy to see from static land records. I'd love to learn that some legal papers were stored away from the ravages of that courthouse fire! << NWNW Section 8 3s 8e dated Oct 13, 1848 and filed Feb 3, 1849 Book 54 Page 252. >> From what source is the above quote? Does anyone know if the County Assessor, plat maps or other land office records are available for years before 1850? What about tax records? I know how to access the online IL State databases, BLM, etc., for original land patents, but I haven't had much time to devote to this as yet, and as you can likely tell, I'm pretty green at this research. Where can I find land purchases from original settler to next person, and thereafter? Point me in the right direction, please. I have to track a family (Jacob RISTER) who were there from about 1828-1847. Dates which seem to follow some of the earliest, and precede the most helpful surviving records. I will see what area church and newspaper records survive and hope to cull what I can. The best solid clue I have to go on relating directly to Wayne County is the land patent record, so I am drawn to this thread to see what follows. I have yet to order Civil War records which may confirm a Fairfield connection to my Wisconsin based soldier from Wayne County, IL. The WI obit/death notices of these folks only say Wayne with no specified town. I have to take the land patent, legal geo-coordinates and translate them to English, so I can find their home. I hope to find Bland's and other publications helpful. I'm really praying for any help at all! I was going to reply with a possible long shot connection to my RISTER family and the WILSON Lois mentioned, but found that our connection, a Wayne Co. born Lucinda Rister married John Wilson, (b.1827) of Posey County, Indiana. More of a long shot, even though Posey County is the southwestern most county in Indiana, southeast of Wayne on the border next to Gallatin & White Counties, IL. Ah well.... I wish you all much luck with your quest! This area seems to be quite a challenge to research, but I'm sure it will be rewarding. I'll gladly post any connections or data I find which might be useful to other list members. I'll gratefully appreciate any help and guidance. Margaret There are books published on the cemeteries of Wayne County, IL but unless someone volunteers to walk the cemeteries, we'll never get the information online! You can purchase the books off the Wayne County website. I made a trip to Jefferson and Wayne Counties over Labor Day last year, and visited a couple of cemeteries in Wayne County (to find my relatives) and took some photos. I plan on going back again this year for a whole week and will try and take photos of all the gravestones in Thomason (near Wayne City) Farnsworth (Mt. Zion) Cemetery and also the Salem (Davis-Mateer) (near Keenes) cemeteries where I have lots of relatives. I'll work with Dianna to get them posted on the Wayne County website. THOMAS STANLEY and ISALINDA/ ICEBINDA HUDNALL who lived in Wayne Co. 1880-1940 had nine children. On the 1900 census seven of nine were alive; on the 1910 census five of nine were alive. My Gr-Gr-grandmother was Sarah Wilson who was m. to Samuel Horton in Wayne Co.,Mo. Anybody have any Horton's in their line and also any Cherokee? Thanx! Sue from Mo.
If memory serves me correctly, there were two men with the name Silas Wilson. I do not think that they were connected. When I say if memory serves me correctly, that is what I mean. I would try to help you more, but my eyes are giving me difficulty and what I have written here is from memory. The court house in Wayne Co. burned on the 17 Nov. 1886. I think that there is one index to some deeds prior to that date. Much work has been done on the Wilson family of Wayne Co. The problem is that there is two different lines of Wilsons. I think that there was a Joseph Wilson that married into the Borah family. The problem is that there was also a connection between the Thomas M. Wilson family and the Borahs. Thomas is my line. I would suggest that you check census records if you have not done so. Also, even though the court house burned, files were saved, but it is my understanding that there is no index to these. If you need someone to do research for you, I can give you the name and address of a professional researcher, who is a Wilson descendant. Her charges were very reasonable. Please contact me privately for her name and address. There was a man that had Atteberry material. This was some time ago. If you contact the library at Fairfield, they might be able to suggest his name. [email protected]
SURNAMES - STANLEY, BOLEN, BROWN On the 1880 Wayne Co IL - Lamard Township- There is an ALBERT BOLEN age 25 born in OH and his wife Laura age 27 born OH. I do not know when and where they married but Lura marries again in 1890 to Elisha L Brown in Wayne Co IL. I believe this Laura Bolen is the daughter of Isaac Stanley who was living nearby in Lamard township. Does anyone have any knowledge of this couple or of Elisha L Brown? On the 1900 census Laura states that she had one of two children alive. I do not know if these children would have been from her marriage to Albert Bolen or to Elisha Brown. Thanks for your help. Hi, I do know some information about a William Taylor who probably lived in Clay Co. He had 4 daughters, and at least one of them would have been born about 1892. Do you happen to have a Lois Taylor or Adra Taylor in your family? Barb

Are there any cemetery records online for Wayne County? I am trying to figure out where my GGreat Grandparents Otis and Sarah Trussell are buried. Sarah Trussell died on February 19, 1870 in Fairfield and Otis G. Trussell died on February 12, 1879, also in Fairfield. Sandy, Thanks for the link, I checked several spellings for Atterberry but could not find anything either. Do you know if the Wayne County Clerk has the deeds and wills? I think that either Charles W. Atteberry or his wife Susan (Hunsinger) Atteberry or some of their family may have inherited this land from Asa Haynes. Hi Everyone, I have been researching my family for years, but my mind has drawn a blank when it comes to finding the land records for Wayne County. Can anyone help me find the records that would show how my G.G. Grandparents Charles W. and Susan (Hunsinger) Atteberry obtained the land mentioned below? Charles and Susan were married 24 August 1848 in White Co. IL. HELP PLEASE. Thanks, Lois Branch Silas Wilson who married Nancy Jane Atterberry, dau. of Reuben Atterberry, bought from Charles W & Susan (Hunsinger) Atteberry the NWNW Section 8 3s 8e dated Oct 13, 1848 and filed Feb 3, 1849 Book 54 Page 252. The Illinois land database shows Asa Haynes homesteaded this forty acres Oct 18,1836. He also homesteaded the SWNW Section 8 May 23, 1836. This is in spite of the record that a James Wilson homesteaded the entire 140 acres in 1819. How did the land move from Asa in 1836 to Chas and Susan, and then sold to Silas Wilson on 13 Oct 1848 (40 acres of land there in Wayne County, in fact at the Barnhill Road-Highway 45 intersection) --some of these people must have been related and sold within the family.
Lois I checked the online Land Records but don't find the particular pieces you mention. You can check yourself at the Illinois Archives: http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/genealogy/landsrch.html I can find some purchases by Asa Haynes, but not your Atterberry. I am hoping this person is still on this mail site. I could not answer him as there seems to be something wrong with his e-mail. Wayne Co., IL Researchers I am doing 'house cleaning' with the list's email. Some people are in there 2 or more times with different addresses. If you changed your email within the past 6 months, 'the email for your old address bounces'. A few of you have 2 or more listings with the same email address. So I am only removing the 'extra' address. IF you got a notice about being removed from the list and question it or disagree, PLEASE contact me so I can double check your listing. Thanks!
