Hello All; Wow what a response:) For those of you who would not be able to make it on the date that might be picked---please don't feel left out..I will still be happy to work with each one of you when you can make it to Wayne County...I do alot of camping in the summer time but I am sure that I can work around that...I know what it is like to come to a place where you don't know anyone...and it sounds like alot of people are looking for ancestors in this area...So as I said I will work with you all one on one when and if you can make it to this little piece of the world...Also my offer of doing research for anyone still stands..I have found alot of information for people so far which makes me want to dig even deeper to see what else I can find... Thanks to all who has responded... Sincerely, Michelle Young:)
I especially appreciate knowing that there is Circuit Court Record Bk. 1 is available. I was looking for probate records and never thought of asking about the circuit court records. That was stupid of me. Back in the early days it seems that going to court was almost entertainment. Dorris [email protected]
I am not sure who the person was that said she would be there in Wayne, CO. Aug. 31-Sept 8. I, personally am not good at organizing, but if someone would take it upon themselves to try to organize some type of what I would call "A gathering of the clans" in Wayne Co. on those dates, perhaps we could get some type of meeting set up to share info with our selves and also with those in Wayne Co. that are "tree climbing". Also, I want to say ditto to the person that spoke of Doris Bland. She is one of those that I consider to be "Salt of the Earth". Dorris Lagow [email protected]
I'm looking for information on W. C. McCleary and wife Lenore born abt. 1850. They are listed in Wayne Co. census in 1900 with children James, John, Laura, Marion and Raymond. Is there any help out there? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have information on Marion after 1910 in Wyoming. Thanks, Janis _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
Another large list I am on does this and it is very successuful....I wish I could attend. I will be in Wayne County in May.....maybe we could have a meeting in May. Thanks. (that might not work as school would not be out....but my children are in their late 30's! It would work for me.) . I would love to meet Ms Bland. Especially if she would bring her books with her to look over and purchase.Ira Sharp Dennis in Amarillo, Texas Michelle I think you are the greatest, always so helpful
Michelle, I'm planning on being there Aug 31 - Sep 8 and would love to have you organize a work session. I do have one family reunion to go to on Sunday Sep 1 (Marlow family reunion in Bluford). If there are any Marlow family members on this list, let me know and I'll make sure and send you announcement about the family reunion since I'm secretary this year. I have a cousin I've never met coming down from northern Michigan for a couple of days over Labor Day and my mother's sister is coming from North Carolina and will be interested in joining in. My aunt can probably help provide info as well as she is in her late 70's (although I know she'd hate me to tell that). I have been asked off list by a few people on how to contribute info to the "cemetery project". If you have info on your ancestor's burial place in Wayne County, be it with or without a picture, please send me the info via email. If you do not have the ability to make a digital photo to scan and email it to me, please contact me off list and I can give you my regular address and you can mail me the photos, I will scan them and send them back to you if needed. Any other questions, please feel free to drop me a line! margaret
Hi, I'm on several lists for genealogy and one in particular which is quite large and active and gets together in the summer for a "work session". I have not attended, but I believe they had about 40 attendees last summer which was larger than the year before. They had donations of books, copiers, local historians etc...the historical society was open as was the library and courthouse especially for them. It was not only a great time for them to work on genealogy but it seemed that those who attended were drawn even closer in friendship to their internet geneealogy friends. I think it is a great idea, but the burden of organizing really falls to you all who live in the county. It is a good idea to bat around on the list for other ideas and opinions. The county I referred to is planning another one for this summer as well. It seemed to be a valuable get together for those who attended. Bridget
Sandra Thanks so much for the offer. I plan on spending a week in Wayne/Jefferson counties Aug 31-Sep 8 and would love to get a group together. I have no clue where cemeteries are. When I visited last year over Labor Day, I met some wonderful people from Jefferson County that actually led me to Farnsworth and Davis-Mateer so I could find some of my ancestors I was looking for. This is how I started taking photos of gravestones. I have very fond memories of spending time with my grandparents around Bluford, IL. I also remember my cousin living in a house in Wayne City on the main drag through town and couldn't resist driving by and looking to see if the house was still there when I was there (I was only 8 at that time). Happily, the house was still there. My parents, mom mom's parents and other relatives are buried at Thomason Cemetery and I know how to get there. These are the only cemeteries in Wayne County I have visited but will gladly go to others and photograph gravestones. I do need help with transcription of the pictures of the stones. Any chance my Mauldings and yours are related ??? My line is: Ambrose Maulding b 1 Aug 1755 d 26 Aug 1833 buried at Farnsworth (Mt. To All, A group of us are partnering together to try to get as much Wayne County Cemetery info online, complete with photos where possible. I wanted to put out an APB to all Wayne County listers that if anyone has 'walked' any of the Cemeteries or even just has photos of their own families headstones that they would like to contribute to the cause to please let me know! I am pretty excited about this project and see it gaining momentum already!! Thanks! margaret
Hello! I feel an obligation to jump in here. I have spent many days in Wayne Co., have met Doris B. (in her home), and own many of her books/pamphlets. She's a very neat lady who won't sell you something that you really "don't need", but will help you refine your search (not like some of the "show" book dealers!). My Wayne Co. ancestors are Cross, Payne, Maulding, Patterson. All of my IL. ancestry is concentrated in Wayne, Marion, and Hamilton counties, and this might assist someone with family "overlap". I live in Ky.-less than 2 hrs from Fairfield. I would like to suggest a "work session", a bit later this spring/summer, where a couple of us "locals" might meet and help some of you out there who are not able to get to the Wayne Co. Courthouse, Salem, Four Mile or Thomason Cems., to name a few. This is just an idea. Let me know what you think. I placed the data into a database and the pictures are in a directory. I made it so that it would be easy to add more cemeteries. I planned on just using a comma delimited file and importing that file into the database. One of the reasons that I wanted to use a database is to make queries easier. Hi Mike, Sandy and I are only beginning to try to do this and had taken our conversation off-list. Perhaps you could share how you indexed them, what format, etc? It would be terrific if we could share info as well. The more people that walk the cemeteries and take photos, the more info we can get online! Take care, margaret Michael Clemmons wrote: > I have started to place cemeteries on line at my family web site. Only have > one so far, Barnhill Cemetery. I have started to place cemeteries on line at my family web site. Only have one so far, Barnhill Cemetery. I have a couple of more plots to add and then I will start proofing the work. There are images that go with all the entries. I hope to get other cemeteries on line as soon as i can get back down there. I will probably start with the smaller ones at first. Margaret There are books published on the cemeteries of Wayne County, IL but unless someone volunteers to walk the cemeteries, we'll never get the information online! You can purchase the books off the Wayne County website. I made a trip to Jefferson and Wayne Counties over Labor Day last year, and visited a couple of cemeteries in Wayne County (to find my relatives) and took some photos. I plan on going back again this year for a whole week and will try and take photos of all the gravestones in Thomason (near Wayne City) Farnsworth (Mt. Zion) Cemetery and also the Salem (Davis-Mateer) (near Keenes) cemeteries where I have lots of relatives. I'll work with Dianna to get them posted on the Wayne County website. The records that exist are in the office of the circuit clerk. They are in file boxes. If you have ever been in the office of a circuit clerk, you may have seen some of these file boxes. They are about 6 in. or so wide and somewhat deep. They are packed with folded papers. To the best of my knowledge, there is absolutely no way to tell what would be in any certain box. The books that would indicate the location of any certain records were lost in the fire. I do not think that any deed or land records are in those files. It appears to me that it would take unlimited time to locate anything. If you do go and try, I would suggest that you wear something that you do not mind getting dirty. I think that it is smoke that has gotten on them. They are so old and fragile that I think they should be opened only once and copied. Who has the time and the money! I am SURE that the people in that office would not have time. Indexing the contents would be a wonderful project for some organization. The few people in Wayne Co. that do professional research (for a fee), may have some general idea as to the contents of SOME of these boxes. That is only a possibility. Do not get excited at the idea that anything was left after the fire. It would be like finding a needle in a hay stack or worse. I would suggest that any one wanting land information buy the latest edition of the plat maps (I do not know where they can be purchased) and see who owns the land today. That person may have an abstract for the land. I have one for part of the land that I own in Wayne Co. Much of the rest was passed through the family from the early 1900s. Years ago, an attorney told me that at one time, it was the custom that when land was sold, the seller gave the buyer a copy of the deed that he had received when he got the land. Note that he said that it was the custom, not that everyone did it. A local abstract office might have information. I assume that there would be a fee. May I also say that I consider the records after the fire to be in excellent order and condition. The people in all of the offices are polite and considerate, but we must remember that they can't do our research. My experiences there have been so much better than in some other counties, that I can only give them praise. Dorris
I'm not even sure if I am researching the right Taylor! I am very amateur at tree climbing and am doing the best I can at the moment. George William TAYLOR born about Jan 1832 in OH married Catharine SPICER b 1832, in Muskingum OH in 1852. With tidbits from other Spicer researchers it looks like the family migrated to Wayne County IL around 1853-1854 possibly with the families of Griffith TAYLOR and Harrison TAYLOR On the Wayne County 1855 Census I found the family of George TAYLOR with 2 males under the age of 10, he and his wife between the ages of 20-30. This could possibly be William C TAYLOR and John D TAYLOR. On the Wayne County 1865 Census I found the family of Cather TAYLOR with 3 sons under the age 10, one son between 10 and 20, one female under the age 10 and one female between 30 and 40 or is that 50? I hate the way this census reads...confusing..The 3 sons could be John D TAYLOR Samuel B TAYLOR, and Marion W TAYLOR, and the daughter could be Mary A TAYLOR. George is found on the 1862 Civil War Roster for Wayne County in Indian Prairie, not called to muster, along with Griffith TAYLOR Mary A TAYLOR is mentioned in Catharine's obituary as being Mrs Mary A EARHART living in Clay County in 1910. At that time it is also mentioned that Samuel B TAYLOR and Marion W TAYLOR are her sons, but doesn't mention William C TAYLOR. I am wondering where he went to. Did George have a family business or were they farmers? The 1865 Census mentioned having 60# of wool. The 1855 Census mentioned having $110 worth livestock. More details to current date, maybe this is enough for starters!
Dear KinDetective & others, I researched in Wayne County for the first time this past summer. I thought I'd died and gone to genealogical heaven. The courthouse employees were very helpful. Some of this information is not even listed in lists of courthouse holdings. I thought I had searched everything pre-fire that I could get my hands on, but here is what I found: There is a Circuit Court Index Book 1, from 1800-1880 and the court record packets. The earliest ones are singed and in very poor condition. They need to be microfilmed or preserved in some way soon! But I was able to look through them for whomever. There is also a Book 2 which indexes from 1880-1916 and corresponding records. There is a Will Index from 1861-1950. I don't know if the early wills exist because I none of my known ancestors left a will in that county. I found a Grantor Index book for land records for 1851-1858. Only the grantors (sellers) are indexed. The index book lists almost everything except money paid and other details that don't fit the columns, so it is almost as good as the deeds themselves. Also, look at the later deeds. I had hired a researcher to search my surnames in the indexes. One really important one was mispelled so it was missed when she searched the indexes for me but I found it when I went to look at the original deed for the husband. The husband's deed was dated 1867 but filed in 1909 when he died. A deed for his wife was filed on the page before. It was dated 1858!!! I had the husband's deed for many years but did not know of this deed until my trip this past summer. The grantor index book may hold the key to the wife's purchase of land as she had been previously married and her first husband died before 1857 but I need to search the grantees--unindexed. Aaargh! There maybe other earlier records in the courthouse. I only had 3 days in the Wayne County area and lots of places to visit and search so I did not acquaint myself with every record available in the courthouse, but I was surprised by the amount of early records. Most of this is not microfilmed or extracted by the lovely Wayne County genealogists who have published records like the cemetery records or Wayne County Press info. You have to go in person or hire a researcher. Good luck & happy hunting! Liz Cameron researching Forendo Durham & William C. Hi all! I wish I knew of an online cemetary listing for Wayne County that you didnt have to pay to buy a book! I have been told that possibly my great grandfather George William TAYLOR is buried with his wife Catherine SPICER in Jacobs Chapel Cemetary in Orchardsville. I would love to know what details might be written on his stone if any at all. I have traced his movement from OH to Wayne County as my elusive grandfather William C Taylor, his son seems to have a big gap between George and Catherine's marriage in 1852 and William C marriage in 1912 in Cairo IL. Any help or further details on this couple would be greatly appreciated! I am looking forward to being on this list!
