1. [ILWAYNE-L] Immigrations
2. I do not know what cause it, but there seemed to be a immigration from Jackson Co.,TN to Franklin and Union Co, IL between about 1850-1860 and then to Wayne Co. Some of these families came from Washington Co TN earlier, and prior from Rockingham Co. VA. The Thomas McMackin Wilson and Rachel Fulkerson family came from Butler Co. KY between 1820-1838. Fulkerson Family History and Genealogy Introduction Page...Continued 9/16/2001 {www.fulkerson.org} FULKERSON INDEX are two great sites for Fulkersons. The McMackins and Wilsons were from Greene/Washington Cos. in TN. There was another Wilson family that I think of as the Joseph Wilson family that probably lived in the Barnhill area. The family of Thomas was in the part north and east of Fairfield. Probably in Jasper and Massilon. When I say probably, I am speaking from memory. I am having eye problems and can't do much checking of my material. If we could get something on the web site telling the place of origin of the various family, I feel it would help others. 2. Sandy Bauer
3. All, I have created a temporary spot for three cemeteries, Farnsworth (Mt. Zion), Salem (Davis-Mateer), and Thomason I could use some proof-readers to look over what Margaret, Mike and I have done. I'd like to have the data accurate before Dianna posts this to the Wayne County website or else links to it. I've combined the data that Dianna already had with the photos I took at these cemeteries Labor Day 2001. Also, I'd love to have any additional information from anyone that has walked these cemeteries and transcribed any gravestones. Please do not send me any information from published books. I don't want to infringe on anyone's copyrights. 1. [ILWAYNE-L] Migration to Wayne Co
2. Hi list, I'm curious about the migration in the 1850's from Ohio to Wayne Co. I'm also curious if there were any earlier migrations in the 1830's? I'm searching for a family of Wm James Riggs, wife Violena Dye and their 7 children who supposedly went west to Iowa in the 1830's. The parents died and the children were brought back to Ohio and all turned up in later censuses and went on to marry. Is it possible that this family stopped in Wayne County on their way west? According to Iowa history many families did just that. Are there any land records from the 1830's? This is a long shot I know. Anyone have any ideas about Iowa records? Thanks, Bridget Couch

2. Would that perhaps be the Meigs Co Ohio one? Many Meigs Co citizens migrated to Wayne Co Illinois in the 1850s. I attended the work session last summer and hope to return this year. Bridget is right. It was a very productive time, and the merchants benefitted too. Carolyn Yes that is the one! I thought you had attended Carolyn. From the feedback it was a great weekend for all involved. I'm curious Carolyn and other if you know, why was there a big migration to Wayne Co Il in the 1850's? How was that area picked over all the others. Thanks, Bridget

3. Wayne Co., IL Researchers Just to let you know Betty Beeson has raised the prices a few dollars on her books. The reason being the taxes and postage went up. There is a list of her books under her name but to see the order form, click on her (and Doris) name. Also, we have another author in Wayne Co., Bettie Wheat. I have included an order form with her books, of which she does mostly 'family history books'. Last, this is not a book but, the Wayne Co. Press raised their cost too and that is on the site. Thanks! 3. Wayne Co., IL Researchers If you are out on the Wayne Co. site now, click on reload AFTER you read this email. The Wayne Co. site, on rootsweb, has a NEW LOOK and data is being moved around. Please, remember both sites are under construction. The 'raw data' is being moved from one location to another. In some cases (?) it will be removed from the old location, as Bios, Obits, and etc. Also, in some cases, I will be linking the two, for example (NOT DONE YET), on rootsweb there will be a link to the new location for the 1855 and 1865 Censuses. On the new locations, (NOT DONE YET), there will be a link for the 1850 and 1820 Census back to rootsweb. For the next few days I will complete the new looks. Hopefully I can start uploading new items. Your feedback is important! Let me know how you like this. Many thanks to Gene Wheeler for his help and to Peg, Nola, and Marilynn for their feedback(s).. 1. [ILWAYNE-L] Wayne Co, IL burials
2. I have burial places and dates for some of my Wayne Co, IL ancestors LEATHERS, MCCORMACK, MCCORMICK, MCCOMMACK, MELTON, MONTGALL, BROWN, WARREN, STOGSDILL and other related SURNAMES. They were buried in JACOBS CHAPEL, BAILEY, MT. PLEASANT, POWERS/PLEASANT MOUND, WARREN/NEW CHURCH and some others in Wayne co, IL.. My lines came from Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky and Indiana to Wayne Co, ILL. We believe there was Indian blood in my Wayne Co, IL surnames lines. I put my 2nd great-grandfather William M. LEATHERS large family group photo taken abt 1909 Wayne Co, IL on the US GEN WEB WAYNE Co, IL site. They seem to have Indian features. My maternal grandmother Janie Mae (STOGSDILL) told me her mother Rose Ann (LEATHERS) STOGSDILL had Indian blood. I put my great-grandparents Charles Edward STOGSDILL & Rose Ann (LEATHERS) wedding photo on the MACON Co, IL US GEN SEB site. Rose Ann has dark hair, dark brown eyes and Indian features and William was fair skinned, blonde and blue eyed his father James Charles STOGSDILL was descended from early German line and his mother Mary Ann (FRAZEE) from early French line. Charles & Rose Ann were a nice looking contrast. They died fairly young though. My grandmother Janie Mae (STOGSDILL) was left an orphan by thirteen. Her father died in Sedro Wooley, Washington before she was even two. Her mother married again to John Calvin SHARP. Then Rose died in 1914 Wayne Co, IL buried Jacob's Chapel. I visit the graves every several years, whenever I am able to visit Illinois. I was born in Illinois. I live 1300 miles away in New Mexico though. If I can help someone from my collection from various tombstones and related families Bibles that I have hand copied from on various visits to cemeteries and family correspondence and visits, since I was twelve years old and fifty years later(now sixty-two), on these or any related or allied surnames I will try. 3. In reply to Bridget, I too wondered why Wayne County to stop off and start building homes and having families. I did a bit of searching on the net for migration routes and why, and this is what I discovered. THE NATIONAL ROAD The National Road was originally called the Cumberland Road because it started in Cumberland, Maryland. By 1825, it was referred to as the National Road because of its federal funding. The enabling act for admission of Ohio to the Union in 1803 contained provisions for construction of a road linking the East and West. Congress then passed "An Act to Regulate the Laying Out and Making a Road from Cumberland, in the State of Maryland, to the State of Ohio." In 1811, contracts were signed for construction of the first ten miles west of Cumberland. The road reached Wheeling in 1818. It entered Columbus in 1833, and Congress made its last appropriation for the road in 1838. During the 1830s, Congress had begun to turn the road over to the states for administration and maintenance. Construction was suspended in the early 1840s because of lack of congressional appropriations. Indiana completed its intrastate segment in 1850. The road then continued on to Vandalia, Illinois, but it did not continue on to Jefferson City, Missouri, as had been planned, the idea being that the road was to go through state capitals as it moved westward. The old National Road became part of U.S. 40 in 1926. Cumberland, MD Allegheney Grove, MD Frostburg, MD Grantsville, MD Keyser, MD Oakton, PA Addison, PA Somerfield, PA Farmington, PA Uniontown, PA Brownsville, PA Beallsville, PA Scenery Hill, PA Washington, PA Claysville, PA West Alexander, PA Valley Grove, WV Point Mills Station, WV Fulton, WV Wheeling, WV Bridgeport, OH St. Clairsville, OH Zanesville, OH Columbus, OH Springfield, OH Richmond, IN Indianapolis, IN Terre Haute, IN Effingham, IL Vandalia, IL Many families crossed at St Genevieve into Missouri, or traveled the river system north, but were confronted by Indians and were turned back to safety. They traveled in groups of families for safety sake, some finding it safer back in civilized territory thus returning to the last town of population on the established trail. Interesting I would say, with the information, seems that the National Highway ended in Vandalia IL for our Wayne County ancestors, the end of the line so to speak, and there they set up their establishments. Any other ideas?

2. I would love to come, but would have to be late May or in the fall as I have a daughter getting married May 19. I have very many people I am searching in Wayne Co. - States, Leak, Smith, Lappin, Hill, Wilson, Montgomery, Dye, Porter, Sill, Nickel, and more. Just seems like no one is searching my names. I think I have all of Doris Bland's books and what a Godsend they are from one who can't get to Wayne Co. Most of my people are in Lamard and Arrington Townships, but some are scattered in the others. I especially want to visit the Lappin Cemetery in Arrington Township.
