    3. Thanks to all that set me straight about Laird Cemetery in Wayne County. I'll soon have the Cemetery index page updated with all the known cemeteries in Wayne County and links to the ones that we have received information on. You will see a new look on the page by this evening. Sandy Jeanne Delaney wrote: > Sandy - > > Yes, there is a Laird Cemetery in Wayne County. It is in or near Enterprise, > Illinois. 1. [ILWAYNE-L] Re: Migration to Wayne County, Illinois
    2. Jeanne Delaney
    3. This in reply to a question from someone asking for more information on the History of Wayne County, Illinois book in the Fairfield Library. The book, at least the parts that I looked at, are divided by townships, one per chapter. Chapter 23 documents ZIF Township and has the following heading documenting what is contained in the chapters: ZIP TOWNSHIP--BOUNDARIES AND SURFACE--ORIGIN OF NAME--FIRST SETTLERS--ZIP--RELIGIOUS AND EDUCATIONAL NOTES--AGRICULTURE--MAIN PRODUCTIONS--THE GREAT PRAIRIE FIRE, ETC., ETC. I can't remember what was written about the first settlers since I wasn't looking for that. Rather, I was looking for information my ggrandfather, Richard McClure. For Elm River Township (Enterprise, Il) there was a listing for the officers of Elm River since 1860 (this wouldn't be up-to-date since it is an old book) such as supervisors, town clerks, assessors, collectors, and commissioners of highways, etc. - which is where I found his name. Jeanne Delaney ----- Original Message ----- From: Jeanne Delaney To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2002 7:23 PM Subject: Migration to Wayne County, Illinois There is an old book in the Fairfield Library called "The History of Wayne County". That book might shed some light on when and why of migrations into Wayne County. Jeanne Delaney

    3. Ok, I am still confused about Laird Cemetery in Wayne County. I thought Laird Cemetery was in Jefferson County. I need to find out if there are two of them or not. The Laird Cemetery I know about would be close to Wayne County (maybe it is in Wayne County) but it's posted on the Jefferson County website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iljeffe2/laird_cem.htm The one I know about is next to an abandoned church. The old part of the cemetery was in poor condition until they started mowing the whole thing. Now it looks great. There is a photo on the website below. Can someone help me figure out this mystery??? 2. d1anna
    3. Wayne Co., IL Researchers There has been a problems with various sites trying to provide you a service that you must pay to be a member of. An example of this is GenSeeker (not working now), FamilyDiscovery (not working), and now is trying to open under another name. These site(s) provides a search engine that will search your entry on 'all' genealogy sites, and return links for you to go to each. The problem is, the sites are sites as 'rootsweb', family tree maker', and etc. Sites that are FREE to go to by entering their URL in the location bar. PLEASE, do NOT be scamed by these types of sites. To make sure you are paying for a good site, check it here: http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm In my opinion, there is no need to pay a site for data. Let your county coordinator or host know what you are looking for, if possible be a volunteer to have it put on your county's web site, FREE. Thanks! Dianna Wayne Co., IL Coordinator Wayne Co. Several KOONTZ families migrated in the 1830's to Wayne Co from Columbiana Co, OH and bought federal land in 1839. The KOONTZ Cemetery was undoubtedly named for John KOONTZ who owned land in that section. John KOONTZ's nephew, William ZIMMERMAN and family came to Wayne Co about 1846 from Stark Co, and other ZIMMERMAN's came about 1856 after a brief stay in Wood Co, OH. These ZIMMERMAN's had lived in Columbiana Co before moving to Stark Co, a few miles west, about 1830. I haven't looked to see why the KOONTZ's moved to Wayne Co. However, it is not unlikely that others from Columbiana Co, OH moved there about the same time. Don Zimmerman

    3. Thanks Dianna for informing everyone. I first saw this virus on work email and of course, we had no problem since our unix systems are not affected by these PC viruses (thank goodness). I also prefer to NOT use Outlook at all. I use Netscape Messenger as my email tool and that helps when I am on my PC. Of course, I run a firewall, have a router for my home network and use Norton Antivirus software and run Liveupdate regularly. "Knock on wood" - so far no damage from viruses on either of my personal computers , desktop or laptop. 1. Re: [ILWAYNE-L] Immigrations
    2. Sandy Bauer
    3. Dorris I know my Butler family moved from Butler's Landing in Jackson County, TN because of the Civil War. My great great grandfather Franklin Walker Butler, disagreed with his father, Bailey Butler, over the slavery issue and moved to Illinios in the spring of 1865. Franklin and another relatived owned a general store and they were burned out over their political beliefs. I suspect the migration from North Carolina through Tennesee and on to Illinois had a lot to do with Daniel Boone and others carving out the trail and it being one of the main "road" pioneers were taking as they migrated west. This land was located in Wayne Co, Ill and became the parcel from which the town of Jeffersonville was created in 1853. I have heard Jasper BRANCH named the town Jeffersonville because he didn't want it called Jasperville... I think the railroad named the postoffice Geff and the name Jeffersonville gradually disappeared. Anyway, my guess is Jasper BRANCH invited his friends and family to come join him on his bountyland in this new opportunity, where the land was much easier to farm. In 1854 B&O laid their tracks from Shawneetown to Flora through Jeffersonville, which consisted of 3 small clapboard houses. 1855 Census shows BRANCH family living in Wayne Cty,IL 1860 Census JASPER and REBECCA were living in Johnsonville,Indian Prairie Twp. Was there a particular reason for this migration? I am searching for the Otis and Sarah Trussell family. Thanks, margaret >> I had puzzed over this question for years, until last summer when we drove to Wayne Co Illinois and on to Meigs County Ohio. Then I could understand. I would say there were two reasons why my ancestors migrated there in 1851. 1. They had a restless pioneer spirit and having opened new land in Ohio wanted the opportunity to help carve a new community in Illinois. They came to Meigs Co in 1800 as soon as the land opened for settlement. Wayne County was opening up in 1850 for homesteading. 2. My 2nd great grandfather Samuel S BRANCH was a freewill Baptist preacher and felt the call to bring the Message to a new country. 3. And probably the primary reason, because they were farmers. Wayne County is rich, flat farmland. Meigs county is BEAUTIFUL, right on the Ohio River, very scenic area in the Appalachians, but VERY rough, hilly, rocky, hard to farm. This is my theory for what it is worth. Carolyn Remember, you have a friend in Oklahoma!

    3. Solomon Mitchell is one of our "brick walls". He was on the 1850 census in Wayne Co. IL, with his wife, Paulina (Alexander) Mitchell and their children. Solomon died in 1858, probably in Wayne Co. I have an exact date of death for him and I have tried without success to get to the documented source of that date. Paulina was in Clinton Co. (near relatives) in 1860. Her probate is only an estate sale and it was recorded in Washington Co. IL. I don't know where either Solomon or Paulina Mitchell is buried. Perhaps a tombstone is the source of the exact dates of both birth and death, but WHERE? If anyone knows anything about either Solomon or Paulina Mitchell, I would be grateful to hear from you. I would like very much to know where they are buried and IF the dates of I have are accurate. Many thanks, Dot
