I found this on the web and thought that some of you might be interested. cindy A day after a tornado touches down in the Heartland and wipes out one whole town and part of another, the Red Cross says there are hundreds in need. And hundreds more who want to help. If you're interested, here's what you can do, no matter where you are in the Heartland. The Integra Bank in Wayne City has set up a fund for the family of the first confirmed death from the tornado. You can donate to the Michael Watkinson fund by calling 618-895-2118. The Peoples National Bank in Fairfield is taking donations for all the families effected by the storm. And to donate, you can go to any of the 7 Peoples National Banks in Southern Illinois or call the Fairfield branch at 618-842-2167. And the Jefferson County chapter of the American Red Cross tells Heartland News they have enough volunteers right now, but they are accepting money only donations. You can mail a donation to: Southeast Illinois Tornado Fund 117 North 9th Street. Mt. Vernon, IL 62864 Or, if you live Wayne County, you can hand your donations directly to volunteers from Wayne City High School, who are setting up canisters around town to collect money for storm victims. This is my last posting on the Tornado damage. The Poplar Bluff area that was hit was the PineCone Estates Subdivision. About 7 mile No. of P.B. between there and Greenville just before you get to York Village. The whole subdivision is gone except for 5 homes. Wonderful people are arriving from everywhere to help! God Bless you all! Thanx for letting me post this..I have had a lot of worried responses. Hope this info has helped. you can get more details from: www.KFVS12.com Sue in Mo.
I am posting this in case someone has relatives in any of these areas. Sue in Mo. There's millions of dollars in damage in Poplar Bluff alone, that's the word from county leaders this morning who are surveying the mess left behind by last night's tornadoes. Cars were thrown around up and down Hwy. 67 North and people were trapped in these cars. Hospitals are full of the injured. So far no fatalities. Missouri's governor and Federal Emergency Management Association inspectors are also planning trips to the area. And Bluff's not alone. In Ellsinore, homes, churches and businesses are destroyed. We're getting reports of as many as 30 RV's thrown into the river at Van Buren. In Marquand, the firehouse and city hall are demolished. Went right through downtown area. In all, tornadoes touched down in at least 8 Heartland communities. And as the day sheds light on the damage, devastation is clear. Hello all; I wanted to let everyone know that I am okay---The tornado hit the south side of Fairfield and I live on the North side. I can tell you that alot of people have lost everything that they own. I am on my way out now to survey the damage and I will make sure and let everyone know what it looks like. I was out in it yesterday and from what I saw it was total disaster. Also my offer still stands about the location of the cemeteries in Wayne County. I will be happy to tell people where they are as well as show people if they come to Wayne County... Take care all and keep all these people in your prayers... Oh and to the lady that wondered about golden gate...I am not sure yet but I will find out today and get back to you...I know that it went out by goldengate but I am not sure of the damage... Michelle
Does anyone know if the tornado was in Golden Gate? My dad still has an uncle living there. Gayle
Diane and Sandy Thank you for posting this and keeping everyone informed. I was talking to my dad's cousin on the phone from 3-3:30 (just 1/2 before it hit). Since then, I have not been able to contact them (lines down) nor have the police gotten back to me on them. Below is a copy of the radio report. If anyone has families there, I suggest you watch the 2 links Diane provided. Nola, I hope your family and you are ok! Michelle, your cell phone and phone are not working, if you can, contact me. Bettie Wheat are you and Betty ok? Oh! I can not think right now of all the people that live there on this list, sorry. PLEASE of anyone in that area can get to a web site, contact me asap with updates. I pray you all and everyone is ok. Yes, I am still planning to move there in June! Thanks! All I'm sorry to hear about the tornado that has struck Wayne County. I hope no one on this list was injured or had family members hurt. I have been busy for hours working on updating the cemetery page with links to maps. I had no idea Wayne County was getting hit by a tornado. I have added some new columns to the cemetery index page. I have added a "Also known as" column. I have also added a column for the "Volume Number" of Doris Bland's cemetery book that refers to a particular cemetery so you can easily tell which book you might want to order. Remember Doris walked the cemeteries several years ago and many of the stones she found at that time may no longer be readable. I also added a column for "Map" with either a "Yes" and a link to the map for that cemetery or "No" if I couldn't find a map for that particular cemetery. We still need more volunteers to walk the cemeteries with their cameras and photograph the gravestones so we can post them on the website. Thanks for all the contributions made to date. I look forward to adding more information. I have made my reservations for my trip to Wayne County for Aug 31 - Sep 7. I look forward to walking the cemeteries and taking lots of photos with my digital camera. Sandy
Diane Sorry to hear about the tornado. Glad to hear your relatives are ok. Here's the news from www.myinky.com Tornado kills two in Southern Illinois By Ryan Reynolds April 21, 2002 FAIRFIELD, Ill. - A tornado ripped through several Wayne County communities Sunday, killing two people and injuring 23 others. Authorities identified one of the victims as Michael D. Watkinson, 47, of Wayne City. He was inside a mobile home when the storm hit. A person with him died after being flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Ill. Authorities have not released that victim's name. Five other people were also flown to the Mount Vernon hospital, but their conditions were not immediately available. The tornado, which touched down shortly after 4 p.m., damaged or destroyed homes in the Southern Illinois towns of Wayne City, Sims, Fairfield, Merriam, and Golden Gate. The worst property damage occurred at Sims, a town of 150 people seven miles west of Fairfield, just east of Wayne City. In Sims, several homes and businesses - including the county's only tavern were destroyed at the intersection of Illinois 15 and Sims Road. A salvage yard was also hit there, scattering debris for hundreds of yards and flipping over semi-tractors and trailers. Forecasters issued severe weather warnings for the Tri-State after 3:30 p.m., including tornado warnings in Wayne and White counties in Illinois and Posey County in Indiana. In Vanderburgh County, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning and a severe downpour flooded numerous streets. The National Weather Service also issued flash flood warnings for the counties of Vanderburgh, Posey and Warrick. Numerous roads were closed because of flooding. There is a simple explanation for Sunday's violent weather, according to Pat Spoden, National Weather Service meteorologist. "It's spring," he said. "You've always got to watch the weather in spring." Fairfield (Ill.) Police Chief Brad Winter said about 18 or 20 people received treatment at the Fairfield Memorial Hospital for injuries caused by the storm. Most of the damage in Fairfield was on Broadway Street, located on the city's south side. Fairfield Mayor Mickey Borah said: "It's bad, but it could have been a lot worse, the crews got to work quickly on the damage." Mobile homes were flipped over and a few were destroyed. One of the homes damaged was that of Wayne County Board Chairman Harold Tubbs, 59. He arrived home from a trip and found his one-story home damaged and his mini-van under debris, including downed trees. Sonny Day, a 70-year-old man who lives less than a block from the damage on Fairfield's Broadway Street, said he was sitting inside his home with his daughter, Sandra Wilson, when the tornado hit. "It sounded like a train coming in here," he said. "I've never seen anything like it." For anyone looking for cemetery locations, you can find maps to a lot of the cemeteries if you go to the Wayne County website and click on the link to "Cemeteries" and then click on the link to: "USGS Link to all mapped cemeteries in Wayne County" at the top of the page. That will take you to a list of the cemeteries that the USGS has mapped. Once you get to the USGS list of cemeteries, click on the link to the cemetery you want and then click on: "Show Feature Location" link to see a map that you can zoom in or zoom out to find where the cemetery. If you zoom in enough, you will see the county road number the cemetery is located on. Sandy
