I recently update my webpage with several old family letters dating back as far as 1859. Most describe farm life in the 1880's in Southern Illinois and some include documentation on ancestors from Ireland and Scotland. They provide a fascinating glimpse into the rural life in that era and also mention several families from Washington, St.Clair, or Randolph Counties in Illinois and from the area of Renfrewshire, Scotland. Some of the family names mentioned: Aken / Aiken, Armour, Beavers, Combs, Coningham, Coulter, Dickey, Downie, Drury, Garret, Gibson, Gillespie, Habler, Hemphill, Kennedy, Kingston, Little, McBride, McCauley, McDougal, McIntyre, McMillian, McWilliam, Mearns, Millard, Morrow, Mulholland, Parel, Patton, Pollock, Rigor, Shanklin / Shankland, Shay, Skelly, Stevenson, Telfer / Telford, Ulrichs, Wallace, Weinmann, Wilson, and Young. There are also a few old photos of some of these families. One is a school picture of the students of Gravel Hill School in West Gran Cote, Washington County, Illinois from about 1920.
