    1. [ILWASHIN] Re:Question about counties in 1850/1860

    3. Beth-- The city of Washington is in Tazwell county. According to the Tazwell County Gen Web page at http://www.usgennet.org/~iltazwel/index.html the present Tazwell county borders were established in 1841. Washington is in the northeast corner of the county, perhaps less than five miles to the Woodford county border in both north and east directions. I checked the Illinois Public Land Sales database at http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/data_lan.html and returned five land sales for Thomas Browns in Woodford county between 1834 and 1837 (three in the same section, so probably the same person), but these appear to have been in Montgomery (and one in Kansas) township, which would be about 15 miles east and south of Washington, nearer to Congerville (Woodford County) and Carlock (McLean County). I'm not sure when post offices in these areas were established, but many of the towns in this area weren't platted until the 1850's or 60's, so it is possible that the area where these lands were was considered to be under the jurisdiction of the city of Washington at that time. The Woodford county Gen Web page is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwoodfo/index.htm and the McLean county page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwoodfo/index.htm. Both counties have mailing lists.
