    1. [ILWASHIN] "an old FORTand FERRY"
    2. Robert J. Middleton
    3. Hi All: Some time ago someone wrote to the list that there was info out there on an old fort called the "MIDDLETON & GOING FORT". Not sure about GOING, or spelling of same, but someone told me it was an old surename ??? Would anyone have any more info on this "Fort" ? Doris Christin also sent me some historical info on an old "Kaskaskia River Ferry". Page 260: Looking -Glass Township. (Clinton Co.) "July 20, 1818, William Middleton entered the north-east quarter of section 17. A man by the name of THATCHER had a ferry on the Kankaskia here, and Middleton bought him out, and afterwards run the ferry until his death. It was on a direct well-traveled road, from the south-east to St. Louis, and much patronized by movers from the south going into Missouri in the early times, and Middleton's Ferry was known far and wide. Robert Middleton, a brother, settled about two miles farther down the Kaskaskia river the same year, his cabin stood near the line of St Clair County. The Middletons both died on the land they improved here." (Their brother Reuben was in Washington Co.) This should be up by the river in Okawville twsp. area ??? I would have to check their land records and find the location of the ferry, and are there are any old photos of this ferry??? Think it was still there in early 1850's ??? Robert J. Middleton.
