    1. [ILWASHIN] 1860 Census Help

    3. Hi, folks! I've been working with the Washington County 1860 census for the first time in a while and remembered why I got so frustrated trying to find the pages I wanted. There are no township or town names included (for the most part) and 352 pages to search. Since I'm sure there are others on this list with the same problem, I put together this information which may be of help. Please let me know if you find any mistakes. Can anyone tell me where Osborne and Coloma are located? (see the list of Post Offices) Jean Schorfheide Galloway, NJ aschorfheide@comcast.net ----------------------- Washington County 1860 Census Aids The 1860 census of Washington County was taken by one man, L. F. Blankenship, between early June and mid-November in 1860. The locations are identified only by Township/Range references (no names) and Post Office. My assumption is that the Post Office listed was closest for residents to pick up their mail (please correct me if I’m wrong) and include locations actually outside of Washington County, such as Sparta and Centralia. The references are written T1S R1W for Township 1 South Range 1 West. Nashville is the only town listed without the Township/Range reference. Below is a table of the names for these references: Township 1 South Range 1 West – Irvington Township 1 South Range 2 West – Hoyleton Township 1 South Range 3 West – Covington Township 1 South Range 4 West – Okawville Township 1 South Range 5 West – Venedy Township 2 South Range 1 West – Richview/Ashley Township 2 South Range 2 West – Beaucoup Township 2 South Range 3 West – Nashville Township 2 South Range 4 West – Plum Hill Township 2 South Range 5 West – Johannisburg Township 3 South Range 1 West – DuBois Township 3 South Range 2 West – Bolo Township 3 South Range 3 West – Pilot Knob Township 3 South Range 4 West – Oakdale/Elkton Township 3 South Range 5 West – Lively Grove Township maps for Washington County can be found on-line at http://www3.telus.net/mid/maps.htm Explanation of page numbers: The first column is the page number originally written by the census taker in the space provided on the printed page. There are actually 4 sets of pages in the Washington County census: 1-230, 1-28, 1-42, and 1-52. The second column is the page number written on each page after the records were bound and is usually found on the opposite corner of the original page number. (The original Washington County census was bound in a volume with Wabash and Warren Counties. Wabash County has no additional page numbers, since its pages 1 through 185 match those pages in the bound volume. Warren County covers pages 186 through 656, and Washington County finishes the volume with pages 657 through 1008.) If you are searching the census on microfilm, using this page number wil make it easier to locate the section of the census for which you are looking. The third column is the image number used for viewing the census on-line at Ancestry.com. This is a subscription service, with digital images of all of the US censuses available (1790 through 1930). This is not a sales pitch and I will be happy to answer any questions about their service if contacted by private e-mail.
