    1. [ILWASHIN] Amalia Grossman & where to buy censuses
    2. Jerry Cowley
    3. I'm looking for a place to purchase printed copies of the censuses for Washington County. I just discovered my gg grandmother as Malia Groszmann (Amalia Marie Grossmann) living with the Fred and Mathilde Heinrichsmeyer family in Covington on the 1880 online census. She's never come up on any indexes, film or computer. I about fell off my chair. All I've been able to document on her was her death in St. Peter in 1942. I was literally going through the online index at family search family by family to see what popped up. She's 12, of Swiss ancestry, born in Mascoutah. I'd like to get copies of the earlier censuses to check for her parents (John and Mary) and for others I have. She married Henry Pries. Is anyone on the list familiar with the Heinrichsmeyers? There's a story here somewhere. Thanks, Jerry Cowley

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5g.2ADI/132.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: William BUDDE married his second wife Geneva Elizabeth ARRINGTON in Clinton Co., Illinois. Several BUDDE family members lived in Clinton County. He and Lizzie then lived around New Minden, Washington Co., Illinois in the 1890s. In 1900 they were living in Nashville, Washington Co., Illinois. But sometime between 1900-1902 they moved to East St. Louis City, Illinois which is in St. Clair Co., Illinois. Lizzie died young in April 1902, and at least the 2 or 3 youngest children grew up in a Childrens' Home in Hoyleton, Washington Co., Illinois. Their father and older children remained in East St. Louis City. By 1920, at least two of the children had moved to St. Louis City, Missouri to live. Hope this helps. Karen Long

    1. [ILWASHIN] 1860 Census Help
    2. Jean Schorfheide
    3. Hi, folks! I've been working with the Washington County 1860 census for the first time in a while and remembered why I got so frustrated trying to find the pages I wanted. There are no township or town names included (for the most part) and 352 pages to search. Since I'm sure there are others on this list with the same problem, I put together this information which may be of help. Please let me know if you find any mistakes. Can anyone tell me where Osborne and Coloma are located? (see the list of Post Offices) Jean Schorfheide Galloway, NJ aschorfheide@comcast.net ----------------------- Washington County 1860 Census Aids The 1860 census of Washington County was taken by one man, L. F. Blankenship, between early June and mid-November in 1860. The locations are identified only by Township/Range references (no names) and Post Office. My assumption is that the Post Office listed was closest for residents to pick up their mail (please correct me if I’m wrong) and include locations actually outside of Washington County, such as Sparta and Centralia. The references are written T1S R1W for Township 1 South Range 1 West. Nashville is the only town listed without the Township/Range reference. Below is a table of the names for these references: Township 1 South Range 1 West – Irvington Township 1 South Range 2 West – Hoyleton Township 1 South Range 3 West – Covington Township 1 South Range 4 West – Okawville Township 1 South Range 5 West – Venedy Township 2 South Range 1 West – Richview/Ashley Township 2 South Range 2 West – Beaucoup Township 2 South Range 3 West – Nashville Township 2 South Range 4 West – Plum Hill Township 2 South Range 5 West – Johannisburg Township 3 South Range 1 West – DuBois Township 3 South Range 2 West – Bolo Township 3 South Range 3 West – Pilot Knob Township 3 South Range 4 West – Oakdale/Elkton Township 3 South Range 5 West – Lively Grove Township maps for Washington County can be found on-line at http://www3.telus.net/mid/maps.htm Explanation of page numbers: The first column is the page number originally written by the census taker in the space provided on the printed page. There are actually 4 sets of pages in the Washington County census: 1-230, 1-28, 1-42, and 1-52. The second column is the page number written on each page after the records were bound and is usually found on the opposite corner of the original page number. (The original Washington County census was bound in a volume with Wabash and Warren Counties. Wabash County has no additional page numbers, since its pages 1 through 185 match those pages in the bound volume. Warren County covers pages 186 through 656, and Washington County finishes the volume with pages 657 through 1008.) If you are searching the census on microfilm, using this page number wil make it easier to locate the section of the census for which you are looking. The third column is the image number used for viewing the census on-line at Ancestry.com. This is a subscription service, with digital images of all of the US censuses available (1790 through 1930). This is not a sales pitch and I will be happy to answer any questions about their service if contacted by private e-mail. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Allen, Maxwell, North Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5g.2ADI/303 Message Board Post: Robert NORTH was born 1847 in Randolph Co, IL, to Levi and Catherine (ALLEN) NORTH. Upon their deaths, he moved to Perry Co, IL, where in 1860 he resided in the home of an uncle, John M ALLEN. Nearby, two of Robert's brothers and two of his sisters resided in the home of Malcom G "Mac" MAXWELL, Sr. One of his sisters had become Mac's second wife in 1856. In 1869, Robert married Jemima Ann "Jane" MAXWELL, d/o Mac and first wife, Anna A DAVIS, who had died in 1855. The ceremony took place at Mac's home in Grande Cote Prairie, at the NW corner of Perry Co, IL. Robert and Jane moved then into the SW corner of Washington Co, where at least the first two of their children were born in the Elkton, Elkhorn portion of Oakdale TWSP. In an affidavit some years later, Robert stated he moved his family in 1876 to the City of Nashville, Washington Co, IL, then to Central Township, St Louis Co, MO, in 1891. The area in which his residence there was located became the City of Webster Groves, St Louis Co, MO, in 1896. Like his older brothers, Robert was a veteran of the Civil War, and claimed to have suffered from a variety of ailments which he blamed on his military service. He earned his living as a carpenter and cabinet maker, a trade followed by his eldest son, Albert. Robert died at his home in Webster Groves in 1909. Jane died there in 1922. They were buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery (now Forever Oak Hill) in nearby Kirkwood, St Louis Co, MO. In the estate of Albert's son, Clarence, who died in 1992, a small photograph of a child was discovered, labelled Eva May NORTH. No age was given, and the photo was not dated, but Eva is believed to have been the subject of a family tale about Albert's sister, who lived to be only six or nine years of age. In the 1900 Census, Jane was identified as the mother of 6, of whom 4 were still living at that time. The following list is an approximate make-up of her family, with Eva presumed to have been Jane's third or fourth child: 1. Anna J NORTH (1870-1953); spinster 2. Albert Malcom NORTH (1872-1956) 3. unk - probably b/d btn 1873 and 1880 (not in 1880 Census) 4. unk - probably b/d btn 1873 and 1880 (not in 1880 Census) 5. Edward Rbt NORTH (1882-1909) 6. Wm Casper NORTH (1885-1958) Anyone having information about the two "young" NORTHs in this family is urged to contact me by e-mail. I have information to share about Anna, Albert, Edward and William. Albert was my paternal grandfather, and Clarence was my uncle.

Surnames: Haile, Hale, Maxwell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5g.2ADI/300 Message Board Post: I offer the following both in the hope... (a) ... that a family member will contact me and be willing to share notes, plus (b) ... of clarifying the identity of the parents of this family, thereby avoiding confusion shown in other submittals to Ancestry.com under the surnames of HAILE and/or HAIL. Meshack was one of several men to bear that name, both in TN and IL. The man of my interest was born 23 JUN 1774, presumedly in TN, tho possibly in VA or the Carolinas. He married at least two times, and sired not less than 12 children, some born in TN, the remainder in IL. Meshack moved his family to South-central IL in the early 1830s, and settled eventually in Washington Co, IL, where he remained until his death on 04 APR 1848, (NOT in 1850 as often reported in other files). Many researchers have linked this man, and others of similar names, as the son of another Meshack HAILE & the latter's wife, Mary HAILE (n KINCHLOE or KINCHELOE). However, bases of their various claims contradict what this particular man's children and younger descendants report about him, such as his dates of birth and death. Futhermore, information pertaining to this man's last known wife are being distorted. She has been incorrectly identified as Elizabeth ORMAND or Elizabeth (ORMAND) MAXWELL, when, in fact, she was simply the former Miss Elizabeth MAXWELL. Born in the far eastern portion of TN during the 1790's, she has been identified (in deeds and elswhere) as one of seven known heirs to the estate of Thomas MAXWELL (c.1755- c.1831), late of Bedford Co, TN. After more than 20 years of research conducted on this woman's family, my various contacts and I have NEVER seen the name ORMAND associated with any MAXWELL relative, except in the HAILE and HALE files of Ancestry.com or the LDS FHC in Salt Lake City.
