    2. Verlin N. Rogers
    3. Thanks to [email protected] for the latest from the Washington County Marriage Register as I found my long lost great Aunt Rhoda Rogers; as well as information on my GGrandparents Nathaniel and Hester Stilley Rogers, though the spelling of Rogers (Rodgers) and Stilley (Stilly) are not what we understand to be correct . This information is greatly appreciated. Verlin "Buck" Rogers

    3. Russell, Sorry for being nosy but who is the cousin? I enjoy reading the "Back When" things, too. I have a lot of old Nashville News (how far back, I refuse to say - but my hubby thinks for all my lifetime)! I am going to go thru the list of names being researched and see if I can find anything to share. Will share with the whole group as one of the names may be just what someone else is looking for. 2. Marci, I have family tree maker but I found it hard to use so I haven't finished my genealogy in it. But other people say it is great. (Maybe I need to sit down and figure out how to use it..lol.) On the other lists I am on, people have said the extra stuff they want to us to buy it not good. That we all send our stuff in for free and they turn around and sell it. So a lot of people boycott them. As for your Newspaper I would love to read the columns. As for me, I got a printer for Christmas so now I don't have to send to my husband and then wait three days till he gets around to printing out something for me. whoopee!!......Ava :)

    3. I use both programs. FTM does take longer to enter information. I use FTM to generate the reports and diagrams. I use PAF to generate the web pages. You can purchase the CD's with a full refund guarantee if you do not find any family history information that interests you. But I usually will verify content with some of the free lookup volunteers before I make a purchase. This is what I have done so far with both programs: http://www.west-point.org/users/usma1981/38405/genealogy John Greiman Highlands Ranch, CO [email protected] wrote: > Subject: [ILWASHIN] Question-2 of dem...... > Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 12:34:03 -0600 > From: "Ira & Marci" <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > > So, here is the question. As some of you know, I have been using the PAF for my program. Well, Ira bought me that Family Tree Maker and I wondered if anyone else was using it. (I seem to remember that Tam was using it, I think) It seems like a way harder program to use, so I wondered if it is worth it??? What are the advantages? Disadvantages? Easier. make better reports or what??????? How much are these CD's that they offer? Are they worth it? Lemme know, won't you???????

    3. Hi Marci, I have been using FTM version 6.0 for the last 6 months and find it really easy to use and the reports are really worthwhile. The kinship report especially good ... really helps when you are trying to explain to a not so interested party just where the 4x gt-aunts husband really stands in the picture. I tend to use that and the genealogical report a lot, not so much the others. I have several databases of different branches and it is easy to click in and out and backup on the way. The manual that comes with it, as manuals go, is pretty good whenever I have come unstuck I've found my solution. The only thing that frustrates me, and I must admit that I haven't looked for a way to turn it off, is the little yellow popup help boxes that flash up if you stay on a field without entering data. I bought the 15cd pack but I haven't looked at all the cd's yet but like Dot I don't find them very easy to use probably because i haven't taken the time to suss them out properly. When I do i will offer look-ups - so watch this space! As to bugs in the latest version - I am a cynical old computer programmer still programming after 20 + years. No software is bug free personally I wouldn't buy 'the only just released version" but a prior release and then an upgrade when the bugs have been ironed out!... I said I was cynical. Re the Nashville snippets from days gone by - keep 'em rolling! As far as I know my partners rellies didn't get to Nashville but you never know they just might have gone to visit little Miss Muffett! Well that's my lot. Love Margaret in warm and sunny Auckland, New Zealand where I am about to head off to the beach - eat your hearts out! 3. Hi Marci, The Nashville News items are great and interesting to read, even if we never see an ancestor. Thanks for taking the time to share them. I have not used PAF, but have used FTM (Family Tree Maker) for about 8-10 years. I think a lot of people seem to use it, so that is an advantage. Some parts of it have been improved in their latest 7.0 version, but I think it also came with more bugs that should have been cleared up before it went on the market. I have had to call for tech support twice for 7.0 and I am not sure the problem is corrected yet. There are some interesting reports that are available on it though. The 7.0 has a map feature, but I need to explore it more before I can say much about it. I have some of their CD's and like some of them, but not others. The 1850 census for the entire state of IL is worth the $55 or whatever it was. It is a set of 4 CD's. It is actual film images of the census and is indexed. If you choose to print a page, however, it is smaller than if you printed one directly from the census film. Some of the marriage CD's are not easy to search, in my opinion, and not all marriage CD's seem to work the same. I haven't figured out a way to search for a specific surname in a specific county, without starting with the other states that come before it alphabetically and going through all of their counties. It can be searched by a specific county and state, but I just have to scroll through all of the names to get to the name I want. Maybe I don't know exactly how to do it, but that is my experience. What I don't like about some CD's is that you don't know until you get it whether the particular counties in the state of your interest will be on the CD. For example, it may cover MO, but not every county, OR not for the date of your interest. I don't know if there is a way to find that information BEFORE you order or not. I don't see it in their advertisements. That is my 2 cents worth. Dot

    3. Well, I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas!(AND GOT LOTS OF GOOD PREZZIES)......I got a Cockatiel...his name is "Buddy Love", Paddy(my doggie) wanted to name him "Lunch" but that was nixed..... So, here is the question. Also, as some of you know, I get the Nashville News, and I thought that if some of you would like....I could type up and e-mail the "happened 65, and the Happened 60 years ago thingee....and possibly the 55 years too....that way it would cover the WWII year(1944).......So what does everyone think? Should I do this for a while?? Well.....Lets see a little action on the list.....waddya think?? Love to all! Marci

    3. Merry Christmas Everyone, Rabbit fever is what you caught by eating those disease-carrying rabbits before the first hard freeze of the winter. I can remember my brothers being told that it was too early in the winter to go rabbit hunting, so you can see that it can't just be an old time disease, can it? And you'd better say no. Although I couldn't find those two terms in the links that I checked below, interesting sights to go browsing for other diseases are: http://www.tip.net.au/~dnum/medico.htm is a good source for those terms http://www.rootsweb.com/~fianna/guide/epidem.html> is a good source about epidemics that occurred http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/disease.htm http://www.uftree.com/UFT/HowTos/SettingOut/disease1.html Dorothy Marci, thanks for typing those news clips in!
