    3. Dec. 19th 1999................ It happened here 65 years ago (1934) The Sinclair Service Station in Ashley, operated by Ben Hartline, was broken into with a considerable amount of cigarettes and candy being stolen. Edward T. Westermeyer of Irvington, Coburn Skibinski of Richview, Lee Bowers of Beaucoup, Harry Schaeffer of Oakdale and Edwin Leitz of Vennedy were chosen enumerators for a special federal farm census to begin in Washington County after the first of the year. Coal Miners in Hillboro asked the federal governmant to pay them for non-production of coal similar to programs being used to help farmers. An East St. Louis man, Napoleon Hayward Quertermous, was found dead on route 153 west of the township road in Plum Hill Twp. He had apparently been struck during the snowstorm by a car. Other deaths: Mrs Margaret Ann Stewert of Nashville, and Miss Eva Williamson of Nashville. It Happened here 60 years ago (1939) Washington county was blanketed with a heavy, wet snow 2 days before Christmas causing a rash of auto accidents. No serious injuries were reported, however, 15 cars were counted in ditches between Nashville and Okawville. Three S Markets advertized 10 pounds of sugar for 49 cents, boiling beef at 10 cents a pound and a dozen oranges for a quarter. Joseph Karolczak, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Karolczak of south of Nashville, died of injuries when he was kicked in the head by a horse. Other deaths: Mrs Matilda Rieger of Nashville. Thomas Dahncke, Sr. of Oakdale. Miss Altha Shirley, sister of W. A. Shirley of Nashville. Henry C.Moeller of Stone Church. Phillip C. H. Meyer 39 formerly of Addieville. Charles Mendell, 13 son of Mr. and Mrs Edward Mendell of Chicago. It happened here 55 years ago: (1944) Tularemia, the disease known as rabbit fever, had made an appearance in southern Illinois with 5 cases reported in DuQuoin, 5 cases in Belleville, and several in Pinckneyville. Eva Lehr returned home to Lively Grove after completing an 8 year sentence in the Dwight Reformatory for attempting to burn down the local jail. Beatty Drug Store advertised "Granddad" stimulating tablets for older men and women who "need your pep stimulated and want to feel full of fun and frolic". :-) Mrs Bruce Berfeld, the former Sophia McMilliam of Nashville received word that her son, Private Charles Lester Loyd, was killed in action in France. Miss Madeline Blanchard of Long Beach California became the bride of LT. Norman Maxwell of Nashville. Leslie Pruehsner received his commision as Army Chaplain and was serving in Burma. PT. Walter Kachuba was wounded by an enemy mortar shell while serving as a tank driver in France. Deaths: Stanley Nowakowski of Nashville. Albert Elliot Seidenstricker of Ashley. John Michael formerly of Hoyleton. Mrs Minnie Hargrave Hampton of DuBois. Mrs Adolf Fehrman (nee Winkelman) formerly of Okawville. Victor Filipski of St Louis MO. 1. [ILWASHIN] Happy New Year
    2. Shirley D White
    3. Hi Folks, just to wish all of you a wonderful New Year's Eve. I will be watching the New Year in here and attending my brother's wedding the following morning early. Guess it will be a busy time for me, hope all is well with all of you. I suppose that all of you know about the new threats to our systems. The only one that scars me is "Bubble Boy", so watch our for it, if you haven't all read heard about it. I intend to just turn off the computer, unplug the thing until a few days after. I will be so busy, I won't have time to get on anyway. My wish for all of Washing County, Illinois researchers - May all your skies be blue and when they are not; may you be covered so you won't get wet, holding on, so you won't get blown away or just warm when it is cold, cool when it is hot. May all your searches uncover at least one lead and may you find each person you set your heart and mind to find in 2000. May you complete all your goals, and most of all may you not put impossible demands on yourself. May Washington County get all those "Records" copied and put in proper places on proper paper and entrusted with proper people. May all it records become readily available to all people who wish to have a look. May the County be accommodating and friendly to those of us who chose to preserve History. May you find all the graves with readably inscriptions, all records easily legible and all attendants accommodating. May the net pick up more and more Historical Research information and may the States get in on the band wagon and make it available to us. May you be blessed with peace, happiness, health and safety throughout the year, both you and your families. May the Washington County Web Page grow and be blessed with a wealth of information. Well that is my 2 cents worth. It has been a joy reading some of your messages and I hope in 2000 we will have much more to share. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2000 Shirley White

    1. Re: [ILWASHIN] Institution Name
    2. Shirley D White
    3. I was told that all people, institutionalized, visiting with a relative or whatever the circumstance, would be listed on a Census Record somewhere. So to find out whether this was true, I looked for a child, supposedly in an Orphanage. I couldn't find them on the Census Record but I found them on Soundex, then went to the Census and found them. The Soundex shows all people in the household, shows if they are visiting or living there, like an Orphanage, then also show where they are enumerated, sheet, roll number, etc. It works for me this way, since the Soundex is alphabetical. Lots of luck on this. I was also told by the Census Records that if someone hid for whatever reason, even an adult, they were not recorded. They simply skipped them. I suppose it was too much trouble to track some folks down. Many people, especially in 1880 census would simply "just go fishing", leaving notes on their doors and such to this effect. They would be left off census because the info was of none effect. They were supposedly counted, just not reported on census. Many things went on like this back in that time. 2. I use family tree maker all the time and love mine. I do not buy the extra cd's anymore because once you have the index (that comes with the program) you can look up your family name to see if its there or not, anyway our library has all the disc so I use the index and then go to the library if I find something. They will let me make copies 10 cents each. I just got Jess M Thompson's book on Pike County History Illinois, lot of families are in this book Its becomming my red bible. Any way there are a lot of people from KY in ther and other places as well. So if any of your relatives went to Pike County IL I will offer to do a look up for you. Hope you all had a great Christmas & Have a Great New Year Tammy

    2. Greetings: Can anyone help with the name of an "Institution" in (around) the Warren Co, Monmouth area of Illinois? A sister of my Grandfather, B) 1871--D) 1908, supposedly was in an institution. This family was not wealthy, were these institutions free of charge? She evidentally visited with the family at home at times. Also is there any type of census records, as she is not on the 1880 census listings as a family member. Any ideas at all how to find any information? Thanks, Happy New Year, Shirley

    1. [ILWASHIN] Re: Question2......
    2. Tom Stevenson
    3. Marci, I have used Family Tree Maker for a few years. I haven't used PAF, so I can't compare them. FTM is very easy to use, after an hour or two you will be pretty proficient. You can store photos, notes, source information, etc. for each name. It produces a variety of standard and customized reports with a mouse-click. One of its features is a very easy and FREE webpage. You basically tell it you want a webpage and it sets up the site for you. You pick the background and choose the reports, pictures, etc. that you want and it uploads them automatically to your page. It's not quite as flexible as if you coded your own page in HTML, but it's a great way to get your data on the web so other researchers can find it, and find you. As far as the cd-roms, I agree with the other poster, the Illinois 1850 census was worth four times the price to me. As far as their World Family Tree cd's, those are customer's database files that they uploaded to FTM who sells them on cd's. If you find a family tree with your line on it, it's great. One way to tell is go to the FTW homepage and do an online search. You can tell it to look for your name on cd's only or internet also. If the name is on one of their cd's, then you can get it if you want. Or, you can go to the following website and some kind soul will do a lookup for you! Just be sure to do the search first so you don't waste their time looking on a cd that doesn't have your name. The free lookup site is: http://genweb.net/~gen-cds/cdlist.html To do a search, the site is: http://www.familytreemaker.com/ifftop.html You can tell it which cd's to search. As you can tell, I am pretty happy with FTM overall. I find it above average in terms of functionality (although not the most advanced on the market), extremely easy for anyone to use, and the easiest way to create a genealogy website that there is, and for free. Feel free to email me with any questions or problems. There is also a free help bulletin board in genforum at the following site. They usually answer my questions within 24 hours at this site: http://genforum.genealogy.com/general/#computers Good luck! Let us know when you get your webpage up! Tom Stevenson (The following website was created with Family Tree Maker) http://www.StevensonFamily.com [email protected] wrote: > So, here is the question. As some of you know, I have been using the PAF for my program. Well, Ira bought me that Family Tree Maker and I wondered if anyone else was using it. (I seem to remember that Tam was using it, I think) It seems like a way harder program to use, so I wondered if it is worth it??? What are the advantages? Disadvantages? Easier. make better reports or what??????? How much are these CD's that they offer? Are they worth it? Lemme know, won't you??????? >

    1. [ILWASHIN] Ancestry.com
    2. Ira & Marci
    3. As you all probably know, www.Ancestry.com is free right now. This is nice as you can look and see if anyone is researching who you are. Great for filling in holes (got to be verified) and such.....and possible contacts. There is one GREAT problem that I want to make you all aware of. Those databases that they use have mistakes on them. One mistake was my GGG-Granddaddy Thomas Blar Woof is listed as being mustered out in the Civil War....nope, he died at the Battle of Peachtree Creek. (Have them doc's to prove it).....the other one is GG-Granddaddy (who is near and dear to my heart) Sanders Summers....who is listed as a DESERTER!!!!!!!!!!! He is the one on Wayne's page and who suffered in Andersonville Prison. I have been in contact with Ancestry.com and they said they are unable to verify all the infomation on their site, and that I should contact the supplier of the database(am I gonna, you ask??? Hell yes!!!!!!!!) Anyway......Have a great day!....and good to hear that Ava finally got a printer..... :-) Youu Bestest Buddy...... Marci
