Hi Shirley, My families in Washington Co. IL include William TAYLOR>>James Wiley TAYLOR>> then over to Marion Co. and the DUNCANs, SHELTONs, HADDENs, (and those are just the direct lines, but I look for all of their in-laws, cousins, etc. etc.) My mother was a Hadden, my father a Mitchell. Also I have two Mitchell lines: Solomon MITCHELL (from St. Clair Co. IL to Wayne Co.) 1814-1858, married Paulina ALEXANDER, 1824-1864, d/o Walter Aquilla and Catherine (JOLLIFF) ALEXANDER. The Alexanders were in Jefferson, Wayne, Marion Counties and Paulina moved to Clinton Co. after she was widowed. Her estate settlement was handled in Washington Co. In Washington Co. the son of Solomon and Paulina MITCHELL, Samuel Shook MITCHELL, 1844-1914, married Amanda MITCHELL, 1846-1935, d/o Allen and Sarah Mitchell formerly of Warren Co. TN, Dade Co. MO and then Washington Co. IL. >From there Allen and Sarah eventually moved to TX, and died in there in 1889 and 1887, respectively. Samuel and Amanda moved to Montgomery City, Montgomery Co. MO. Where my grandfather and father were born. Amanda Mitchell's brother, Doctor James MITCHELL (name, not profession) lived in Washington Co. IL, from where he served in the Civil War, and where he married Lydia L. PARKER, whose parents and siblings are unknown to us. Dock and Lydia moved to Round Rock, Williamson Co. TX, where they died. Our "brick walls" are Allen and Sarah Mitchell. He was born NC (don't know what county) Nov 12, 1793. We don't know his parents and aren't sure of his siblings. We don't know Sarah's maiden name, siblings, or much else, except that she was born in TN, Feb 22, 1804 and died Nov 11, 1887 in TX. (Can't find them on a census after 1865, Washington Co. IL.) Another "brick wall" is Walter Aquilla ALEXANDER, born 1790-1800, KY. We don't know his parents or exactly which county in KY he was born. He died before 1850 in Marion Co. A son lived in Clinton Co. It seems that I "specialize" in common names. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Dot
Hello, Barb furnished some SEYLER history and a couple of photos. One photo is from way back - a little rough, but great. Nashville firemen in front of a horse-drawn fire wagon. The other is of Frederick Seyler, once a Town Marshal; and that position placed him with the responsibilty of keeping the fire wagon ready. The links : http://genweb.net/~hinton/wshngtn.html If anyone can provide names for any of the firemen, please e-mail this info privately for us to add. Wayne
Hi All, I am curious about the modernization items occuring in Washington County, and for myself especially Nashville. When was electricity made publicly available? When did telephone service arrive? When was the automobile taking over as the preferred of transportaion? And also the related items such as Street Lights, Traffic Signals, Speed Limits, Paved Streets? Thanks to any responders in advance. Great article, guys. I was real excited as my grandfather Samuel Markham was a volunteer fireman in Nashville and drove a white fire engine but I don't know the time frame and I couldn't recognize him in the photo. (His dates are 1871 to 1950.) And I think it was pulled by horses. I think you have encouraged me to research this further. Thanks. :) Ava
<< William Benjamin Richards born 05-07-1881 in Becaup, Ill. >> Hi Shirley, I don't know any of your folks here, but are you sure you mean Becaup above or Beaucoup? My lines in Washington Co. are Markham, Martin, Carter, Phillips and Whittenberg. My John Phillips came 1819 to Beaucoup and I have most on him and his line. I am working on his mother Elizabeth Sarah Burns. She came up with them from Bount Co.,Tenn. But I can't find her line back. She is suppose to be Penn. Dutch. but her name is Scottish. John's wife was Sarah Whittenberg I have a lot on them also. John's daughter Nancy Lowe Phillips married Richard P. Carter and both died of fever 1849 leaving my Great grandmother Sarah M. Carter and her brother to be raised by John PHillips. I can't connect my Richard P. Carter to the other Carters with proof but I think he connects with them I just don't know how. Sarah married James John Martin whose folks came up in 1850 from Bedford Co. Tenn. His dad had died there. but his mom came with dad's brothers and sisters. (Brown, Bush, Obryant - sister's married names).Mom's name was Elizabeth Phillips Martin...(I have two Phillips lines.) I don't know her parents. Sarah and James Martin's daughter Ava Martin my grandmother married Samuel Markham son of James R. Holland Markham. I can't find his parents. The Markhams came to Washington Co. from Arkansas in 1873. Marci on list has an Elizabeth Markham Summers..that we think is sister to my James but we can't prove it. So that is basically what/who I am looking for. Interested in anything you have with those names. Thanks Ava :)
Great questions Wayne, I wonder about that stuff too. Sure don't have the answer though. Guess its back to reading/history of Nashville, IL 101! Tammy
I was thinking of purchasing some of the publications for sale that are listed on the Washington County homepage. Wondering if someone on the list could check the indexes for me and just let me know if any of the following surnames are listed before I do: Hemphill, McCauley, Pollock, Sands, or Stevenson. If you happen to have any of the Washington County publications that are still in print, please just let me know which book it is that lists some of these names and I will order a copy. I know these ancestors were in Randolph and St. Clair Counties and think they may have "spilled over" into Washington County but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance for any assistance! Hi gang, my thanks also to Robert for all the fine work. Keep it up, I am very thankful for this mail list. I feel that I am somehow closer or at least a possibility of getting info on my family, so I do appreciate the countless hours you have put into this thing Robert. Marci I appreciate all your hard work also. Washington County needs more folks like you, just getting at them and making things happen for Washington county. Robert told me I should let everyone know who I am looking for, so below is what I sent to Robert to post on the web site. Since I am not sure what to send, if anyone has a question, please ask. I do travel, usually, several days of each week so I am not always able to answer until I come back here. I do not travel with a computer, just a camera, pen, pencil, paper, tape recorder, therefore I only answer while at this location. Thanks to everyone again. Could each of you send me who you are working on. I have much research and maybe while here I could find something for someone. Shirley White Researching - John D. Richards, born 10-16-1850 in South Carolina, married Louisa Susan Woodside born 01-05-1852 in Illinois, married on 26 Nov 1871 in Washington or Perry County, I have 2 records saying they married in each county. Their children were - Amanda Jane Richards, born on 06-29-1873 in Illinois, married a Scott, they also moved to Ranger and Abilene, TX. John Calvin Richards, born 07-29-1876 in Illinois. This is all I know about this man, have not been able to find anything else. James Wesley Richards born 1879, in Illinois. Again, nothing else know about him. William Benjamin Richards born 05-07-1881 in Becaup, Ill. I found this line living in Texas, scattered from Odessa to Dallas, TX. I found a cousin living in Californian named Gwinda Horton, a direct descendent of this line and she has filled me in on all these folks. Walter Sanford Richards born in Quincy, Ill on 03-03-1883. The family moved to Texas where Walter moved to Louisiana and married my grandmother - April Gearen (some spell it Guerin). Since this is my line, most of the descendents live in South Louisiana. Edgar Ney Richards - I know absolutely nothing about him, he might have been born in Oklahoma I think, but have not found the record as yet. Harvey Leonard Richards born 1886 in Nebraska or Oklahoma. I found a relative of this man and he is not sure which state they were born in, so I am going to dig up the census records and find out for myself. Charles Elmer Richards born 03-29-1889, I also know nothing about him or his line. Frank Daniel Richards born 1891, I know nothing about him either. On Louisa Susan Woodside line, she was born in Illinois, raised in Illinois. I found her on the 1870 Washington County Census living with her father and mother. Her father was James Woodside, born in Kentucky, moved to Illinois, married Sarah Jane (?), born in Tenn according to 1850 Census of Perry County Illinois. -----Original Message----- From: Robert J. WELL !! We almost generated as much e-mail as last years dreaded "Roll-Call". I have remained on the list because, as I tell others, it's like" talking to a neighbor over the back fence". Cousin Marci even lets me send jokes, off the list , without complaining. Listening to all the complaints about the Washington County Officials made me want to see for myself....what was going on..The wife and I spent a day in Ashley and Nashville just before Christmas. They were polite and helpful but made it known they didn't want anything to do with the dirty (dusty) records in the basement. Also mentioned was a cut off in the works for current records. The library in Nashville,IL has some reference material and a list of the cemetaries and a tombstone index !...just depends on what you're looking for.....they also have the Nashville Newspaper on microfilm.....and a way to copy any page for only 50 cents......found a lot of help at the Ashley Post Office. We got there about 9am, just as everyone arrived to pick up the mail that had just arrived. Most of the cemetaries were in good shape but a lot of tombstones were cracked and stacked in a pile. Marci: a lot of the migration to Texas were veterans(1845) and their relatives. Everyone was offered a landgrant living or dead! The land grants were bought/sold/& traded. We drove from Texas to NC,TN,IL,MO,OK,& back to TX. Had the most help in Robertson County,TN....they bent over backwards to help. more later.............Marshall Jard in TX lookin'for (wifes) Walker,Beck in Wash Cty

I am aware of some of the work involved...which is why I declined to manage/own a list that I initiated among people who are named AVA. LOL. I let someone else do that. Being named Ava I rarely found any other people by that name growing up so when I found the internet I put out queries to all the people on AOL who had Ava in their names and we started a list and had a great time learning about each other and why we were named that etc. It was great fun but I let someone else do the managing as I barely get all my lists read let alone try to manage one. So thanks again Robert. :) I certainly appreciated it. Ava
Hi All: Marci brought up a good point about the mail list and who owns it. It is only hosted on the RootsWeb server (many thanks to them) and they do not own it. If they did they could pay me for hundreds of hours of my time. All the hours and dollars and frustration to provide it for all you great people for your research is put out by me. If I decided I didn't want the mail list any longer I could give it to one of you, and it would be YOUR mail list and not MINE. You could make the rules and policies. It is not part of the Washington County Web Page. A general internet rule I thought you all knew: NEVER REPLY TO SPAM OR CRUDE EMAIL REPORT THE PERSON TO YOUR LIST ADMINISTRATOR (so I can block them) If you would really like to take that person on, use their address not the mail list. (no point in that, no one would get to see all the action) I would not give the person the satisfaction of a reply. Rules are for people who break them, right now it's 4:30 AM and I'd like to go to bed and dream about looking after our mail list and getting back to research. Robert J. Well I am so glad to hear that I am not the only person on this list who felt that way. I was actualy begining to wonder if I had said something I shouldn't of. Tammy
This evening while sorting out some old family papers I ran across what seems to be a copy of where to find the abstract title to property. It lists the volumn, date and what type of book. Some of the surnames listed are Ayers, Roberts, Girells,Staley, Burnet,Neulist,McClurken, Bandelier, Muelheims, and Billings. If anyone is interested please e-mail me directly. I am researching the surnames Mayer, Gilbert, Pertuisot, Hamill in Washington County. Have a good New year everyone. Harlean in Escondido CA
Hello all, I really feel the need to express my feelings at this time, and hopefully you all will not be judgmental and think that I am just spouting off. As far as this list goes it is/was one of the best that I am on. But in the past few days it seems that there has arisen a problem that needs to be addressed. Up until January 2nd, we were a happy group, posting alot of information that here-to-fore was not available. Alot has been learned and through great efforts on many peoples part, great strides have been made. All without flaming, and no fights or quarrels. Then we get a new member, who in my opinion, personally attacked "our" county. That county, sometimes my nemisis, sometimes my friend, but always my ancestry didn't deserve that. For all it's bad points, it was my ancestors home, and in that, it is my home. The attack was bad enough, but the flaming was not on the part of the older members, but from the new one. This should have been addressed by you, Robert. Instead, the way you came across it sounded that "we" (the older members of this list) needed a scolding in list ettiquette. This I felt was wrong. In your e-mail Robert (dated 1-4-2000), you address it specifically to John Theis and tell him that "There has not been a problem on the list in the past two years until the very recent "flames" which I put an immediate end to." Am I reading something wrong here, but it sounds as if you are letting him know that you have warned all of us, and that he was not at fault. In my opinion the warning should have been directed at him and not at us. Also, I am a little offended by your use of words...."MY LIST this, and "MY LIST" that. Correct me if I am wrong, but RootsWeb owns the list, and you are the moderator/administrator. And really, without all of "US" there would be no list. We are what make a list. In fact, "WE" are the list. I will hope that you do not take this as flaming, it is not meant that way. I have worked hard for the members here, (as many have), some of which have become personal friends. I really don't think that I needed to be scolded for something that someone else has done. Nor do I think that anyone on this list needed it . You and all may ask why I am posting this to the list and not to Robert personally. The reason is, that if I am going to be banned off this list, I want the reason known by all. I expressed my opinion and I am glad that I have. Marci Lamar Kasen
