    1. [ILWASHIN] HOOD, SC to IL 1830
    2. According to a publication about the history of the Reformed Presbyterian church in Oakdale, IL a group of 40 people from Chester SC reached Randolph Co. IL in May 1830 (the journey took them 6 weeks). The Archibald and John HOOD families and Thomas and James McCLURKIN families continued on into the Elkhorn Prairie and settled near the present site of Oakdale, Washington Co. IL The 1850 Washington Co. IL census shows the following HOOD families: Pg. 1115 John HOOD (age 50 b. SC), his next-door neighbor was Archibald HOOD (age 50 b. SC), his next-door neighbor was Thomas McCLURKEN (age 45 b. SC). Pg. 1147 George HOOD (age 32 b. SC), his next-door neighbor was Thomas HOOD (age 55 b. SC). Pg. 1151 David McCLURKIN (age 38 b. SC), living with him was Elisabeth McCLURKIN (age 83 b. Ireland), their next-door neighbor was James McCLURKIN (age 47 b. SC) with wife Sarah (age 46 b. SC) Pg. 1158 William HOOD (age 43 b. SC) The church history says that Sarah, wife of James McCLURKIN, was Sarah Rodman HOOD and that James McCLURKIN's father was Thomas McCLURKIN (1745-1845). Sarah was one of the original members of the church. The IL Marriage Index shows the marriage of Sarah Ann HOOD to Williamm T. REDMON in Adams Co. IL 5 Oct 1848. Was this the woman who was listed as James McCLURKIN's wife in 1850? Is anyone else out there researching these HOODs and McCLURKINs? Vickie Elam White

    3. Russell, I got a copy of my census CD that I'm transcribing from Heritage Quest. It cost me $20 and it was my second copy. I thought the first CD (from a different company)was just bad but it's not the CD. Anyway the Heritage Quest program was a view option that allows you to INVERT IMAGE. You then have a black background and white writing. That has helped me several times, plus you can enlarge the words. 2. We all need to do our part to keep the prices down at NARA - Original Message ----- From: Jack Brissee To: ROOTS-L ; [email protected] ; [email protected] Sent: Wednesday 01 March 2000 14:05 Subject: re: Cost of Military Records Going Up (NARA Statement) There have been postings on a number of mail lists recently about an increase in the fees the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) charges for copies of compiled military service records and pension records. While NARA is considering a change to the fee structure for these documents, the information that has been posted is both premature and somewhat inaccurate. The Records Preservation and Access Committee, a joint endeavor of the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the National Genealogical Society, has contacted NARA officials for clarification. The following is the "official NARA statement" issued in response to our inquiry: -Begin NARA Statement: The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) will be issuing a proposed rule within the next few weeks that will revise fees for reproduction, including the "fixed-fee" orders in the NATF 80 series. The proposed rule will have a 60-day public comment period, during which time we will actively seek the comments of the user community. The proposed rule is presently undergoing internal government review. When it is released for publication in the Federal Register, NARA will notify the national genealogical organizations and post a copy of the proposed rule on its web site. The message will include the exact URL and the address for sending comments. -End NARA Statement- The Records Preservation and Access Committee will continue to monitor this proposal, and will post relevant information on the Records Preservation and Access pages of the Federation of Genealogical Societies' Web site (http:www.fgs.org) when it is available. Please feel free to forward this posting to other mail lists on which the original posting may have appeared. Jack Brissee Chair, FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee

    1. [ILWASHIN] census help needed
    2. Russell D. James
    3. Hello list, I am frustrated right now! I ordered from our LDS library the two films that each had 1/2 of the 1880 Washington County census. I had found my Buss clan in the Venedy township in 1860, 1870, so I expected to find them there in 1880. In fact, since his great-great grandson now owns the same farm that has passed through the generations, I knew I would find the family there. I knew also at about what point I would find them. Well......the census records the Mormons have (all copies, I'm told) have the Venedy township as entirely unreadable. It seems the person used a type of pencil or pen that has faded with time and the Mormons say that that township is unreadable for eternity now. I'm hoping this statement of theirs is wrong and that someone will know how to obtain a readable copy of the census records for the Venedy township of Washington County for the 1880 federal census. If you do, could you let me know where and if you have one yourself, could you look up the family of John Buss (sometimes Johann)? Thank you. Russell

    1. Re: [ILWASHIN] census help needed
    2. Dear Russell,, I have found from experience that sometimes you can read what others can't. IF no one answers you on the list, my suggestion is to try to get a copy of the microfilm anyway and see if you can read it. I remember reading / going through all of Washington co looking for my relatives and yes there are parts that are difficult to read....so it depends on your eyesight and perservance. I just recently found my Markhams only because someone had typed up the list on the net but could not read mine. (and others) so they just said ****** and wrote it the bits they could read. This was not IL. Because of the bits they did put in, I knew it was mine and went to the Archives and searched the microfilm. and found the family. It was terribly hard to read but I know it is mine. There are other places besides the Mormons that you can get the microfilm from. Have you tried those? Ava

    3. Marge, What were their names? Do they have other family buried at St Charles Cemetery? I am glad you are planning to visit the Church. Father Dan will probably be happy to talk with you and look up any records he has for you. He is an excellent priest. How much information do you have on them? There is a historical society in Nashville (the county seat) but don't think you'd find too much there. If the name is a familiar one, there might still be relatives in this area. 2. Hi Maggie, I was in Washington County earlier. There is a Motel at the intersection of the main highway and I 64 at Nashville that is pretty good. I found all the attractions, societies, and times of operation by going to Cyndislist.com and scrolling WAY DOWN to the individual counties. The court house was very friendly. The library is across the street from the court house and while it is small the people are very friendly. Nashville is the county seat and the courthouse isn't open on Saturday--you probably already knew that. Donna

    3. Beth-- The city of Washington is in Tazwell county. According to the Tazwell County Gen Web page at http://www.usgennet.org/~iltazwel/index.html the present Tazwell county borders were established in 1841. Washington is in the northeast corner of the county, perhaps less than five miles to the Woodford county border in both north and east directions. I checked the Illinois Public Land Sales database at http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/data_lan.html and returned five land sales for Thomas Browns in Woodford county between 1834 and 1837 (three in the same section, so probably the same person), but these appear to have been in Montgomery (and one in Kansas) township, which would be about 15 miles east and south of Washington, nearer to Congerville (Woodford County) and Carlock (McLean County). I'm not sure when post offices in these areas were established, but many of the towns in this area weren't platted until the 1850's or 60's, so it is possible that the area where these lands were was considered to be under the jurisdiction of the city of Washington at that time. The Woodford county Gen Web page is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwoodfo/index.htm and the McLean county page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwoodfo/index.htm. Both counties have mailing lists.
