"Greetings All" I have spent many hours recovering from a computer crash, and re-doing all the Washington County Queries for the web page. I uploaded new query files to my ISP last night, but still more work to do. Main thing for all: Check and see if your Query is there or missing. Check and see if your email address is correct. (do this anytime over any period of time, not all at once :o) Contact me, [email protected] I still have people sending me email/queries without their personal name. I will not post queries to the web page, or answer any kind of mail, if a person will not put/sign their name on/to it. Hey, my name is Robert Middleton! I reply to these people and ask for their name (for the query database), and most of the time get no reply. Simple rule for queries: #1 Must be for Washington County Illinois. #2 You must include or sign your first and last name with your query request. ANONYMOUS QUERIES WILL NOT BE POSTED Check Your Queries At: http://mypage.direct.ca/m/mid/qryindex.htm (or) .html Let me know if yours is missing, or your email address is wrong. Thanks, Robert. ***1830 Washington County Census*** The 1830 census has been transcribed, proof read, and put into spiral bound book form. It's (8.5X11) and in Microsoft Excel format with 35 pages. It includes 270 "Heads of Families" with number of males and females in house, with the bracketed ages. ( <5, 5<10, 10<15, 15<20, 20<30, etc. ) I think we all have an idea what the old film looks like, and it was fortunate to find one you could read at all. We ordered film in five times since last September. Besides the transcription, it includes printed copies of the original film pages. If anyone is interested it is available for $15.00 U.S. to cover costs. To order: Send U.S. money order, bank draft, your personal cheque, payable to: "Judith Middleton". A cheque must clear. The census will be mailed to you so you must include your full address. (and email address). Send to Address: Judith Middleton Box 1114 Ladysmith, BC V9G 1A8 CANADA Any questions, please contact me. I am looking for death or marriage info on Zachary Summers. His Civil War tombstone is at the Ashley Cemetery, no dates on it. There is no pension info on him either. Marci from the list is wondering about him also. His father was John and his grandfather was Thomas Summers from Ashley. Thanks for any help. Laura S.
I wholeheartedly agree with Christine. Folks who feel this is outrageously high pay monthly fees to use Ancestry Com and seemingly high prices for CD's from FamilyTree Maker that have been contributed to them by all of us with little or no verifications. At least what we get from NARA is legitimate information. As a researcher helping clients, I assure you that many Rev. War Pension files are 50 to 100 pages. What has happened in the past when you request a file, is the NARA staff selected 12-20 pages out of the complete file. Unless you requested the "complete" file, you were only given a partial file..pages the NARA staff felt you would like to have. Genealogists requesting "complete" files were charged additional. The files can be searched on your own if you happen to live near a NARA facility (lucky me!) However, part of this rate increase is for copying - even if you are doing it yourself. The proposal is to move the copy charge from 25 cents to 30 cents. I have never seen anyone that didn't want the file once it was found <lol> we all want to see what information is there! As with everything there are going to be those in favor and those against - the important thing is to let the NARA know how you feel about the documents and the rate increases. Like each of you I appreciate the work the NARA staff does to maintain records entrusted to them. Before we know it, the 1930 census will be released and we will all be busy reading various towns, counties and states again <lol> especially since only a few states will have indexes. Happy searching! Barb
Everyone has their opinion----thank goodness. > - having indexed, microfilmed, etc will encure additional cost If you mean they will incur additional cost for being indexed, microfilmed, etc., why would that be when they are ALREADY microfilmed and indexed?? > - staffing facilities cost will be rising, and if you work, like I do, the > hours are terrible so I can never get to the facilities without taking > a day off, so having them open additional hours will cost. I used to work for pay, but thankfully I am now retired. If the Archives is open additional hours, I don't think that will be of much help to get Civil War pension files. Civil War pension records are not available at regional National Archives, but must requested with a form which is then mailed to Washington D. C., unless one happens to live in that Washington. Maybe it could be hand delivered. The Revolutionary War pension files are on film at Regional Archives, but I for one have never seen the Civil War Pension files available but one way. There are some records of the Civil War at Regional Archives, but not the pension file. I would be surprised if they are ever on the internet since there could be many pages to just one file. Also there is nothing like intrepreting the handwriting on an old document for oneself, or seeing a copy of a page from an old family Bible, rather than the intrepretation of some individuals. Some contain the only written record that some of us will ever see of a marriage or the birthdates of children as written by parents. Some even have affidavits of individuals who can attest to the date of birth of children. Not many official birth records go back that far. Issues on guns, education, drug awareness, AIDS research, etc. are probably on different lists. This one deals with genealogy. Just my opinion Dot
Another point of view............You are probably not going to want to hear this but for the sake of equal opportunity, I will voice my opinion. - the cost for maintaining those records for the future is going up. - having indexed, microfilmed, etc will encure additional cost - staffing facilities cost will be rising, and if you work, like I do, the hours are terrible so I can never get to the facilities without taking a day off, so having them open additional hours will cost. I don't know when the last price increase was but think we are all lucky to have this info available at any cost. I have ordered several of these pension files...and none were even close to a hundred pages....so I think their reasoning is wrong. I can see charging someone more if they have more than 10 or 20 pages. Gosh you can visit the place and look it up for free. And it is only 25 cents to copy the microfilm. Hope I have ordered all I need. LOL. Rotten for future genealogists....looks like genealogists of the future will need a tidy nest egg. Ava
