Sandi, Did you see the message about an Evilsizer that died about 1945 on the streets of Nashville? I may have some info wrong. It said he was married to a Sarah Stamm who was deceased.I tried to print it out and after I deleted it found later that my printer had messed up. Do you have these people in your line ? Thanks for the info. Just when I think I've run out of things to research, I get a new clue from this site! Thanks again. Rita
John-- Thanks very much for the information. Checking the books _Die Familien der Kirchengemeinde Hartum_, Henry Sr. appears to be Heinrich Wilhelm Schnitker, born March 7, 1848, son of Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Schnitker, a Schneider (tailor) and Heuerling (tennant farmer) in Hartum and Christine Marie Horstmann, born in neighboring Südhemmern, Kr. Minden. The brothers were probably Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Schnitker, born Apr. 8, 1842 and Heinrich August Wilhelm, born May 15, 1853. There was also the youngest brother, Gottlieb August, born January 8, 1857. All four are listed in the book _Vivat Amerika, Auswanderung aus dem Kreis Minden 1816--1833_ as emigrating in 1857. Given their ages, I would think they must have come with their parents, or at least another older relative. I know it wasn't unusual for a fifteen-year-old to emigrate by himself, but with an infant brother in tow? While they aren't directly related to my Steffen line, they add one more piece of evidence to an already pretty overwhelming picture of the emigration pattern from the Minden area to Washington county. And as I'm sure you know from your own research, if I look long enough, I can probably find some kind of relationship somewhere through one of the other branches. Thanks again. I have a copy of the 1979 Washington County Illinois History and there are 6 separate entries for the Schnitker families (some are inter-related of course). This is only a short recap: Schnitker, Henry Sr. (brothers William and Christ) born in Hartum, Westfalen, GER, on Mary 7, 1848 Schnitker, Henry (son of Henry, Sr.) Schnitker, Gustav (son of Henry, Jr.) Schnitker, August (son of Henry, Jr.) Schnitker, Ella Marie (daughter of Henry, Jr., 2nd marriage) Schnitker, Rolland Gustan (son of Gustav) Common family names to my research: Maschhoff, Kasten, and Sprehe. No, I have not been in recent contact any of the Schnitker's of Washington County. My last contact was with a Louise (Rixmann) Schnitker in 1985 after my father's funeral. She send us a reproduction picture of a one-room country school picture of herself, my father, and other students of Hoyleton: http://www.west-point.org/users/usma1981/38405/genealogy/images/1936_school.html (watch the word wrap) I would be very interested in telephone number of the Schnitker family members (Louise lived in Centralia). http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/pioneer_search3.htm I've found this to be a useful site for determining if an ancestor emigrated with the Mormon colonists. It is particularly good about finding the name of the ship someone from Europe came on. We had some surprises on it. I'm not sure how effective it is for internal migrations. Jerry in Idaho

John-- Thank you! Yes, I would be interested in any Schnitker information you might have. Even if not directly related to my family, the information would likely help to illustrate migration patterns from the Minden area for a family history book I'm working on. Hi All: Some time ago someone wrote to the list that there was info out there on an old fort called the "MIDDLETON & GOING FORT". Not sure about GOING, or spelling of same, but someone told me it was an old surename ??? Would anyone have any more info on this "Fort" ? Doris Christin also sent me some historical info on an old "Kaskaskia River Ferry". Page 260: Looking -Glass Township. (Clinton Co.) "July 20, 1818, William Middleton entered the north-east quarter of section 17. A man by the name of THATCHER had a ferry on the Kankaskia here, and Middleton bought him out, and afterwards run the ferry until his death. It was on a direct well-traveled road, from the south-east to St. Louis, and much patronized by movers from the south going into Missouri in the early times, and Middleton's Ferry was known far and wide. Robert Middleton, a brother, settled about two miles farther down the Kaskaskia river the same year, his cabin stood near the line of St Clair County. The Middletons both died on the land they improved here." (Their brother Reuben was in Washington Co.) This should be up by the river in Okawville twsp. area ??? I would have to check their land records and find the location of the ferry, and are there are any old photos of this ferry??? Think it was still there in early 1850's ??? Robert J. Middleton.

The earliest Middleton birth date I have in the area is William 24 May 1810, Washington Co. was still St. Claire. Most of my research is on brothers Robert William and Reuben, in old St. Claire, and the new Washington 1818 and then the new Clinton 1824. Do any of these old names ring a bell ???, or any descendants ??? My gg grandfather was born Wash. Co. 1834. When you have time. Many thanks, Robert J. Middleton.
Hi All: Can't find the name of who wrote to the list re: MORMONS. Can only find the following Morman info: "The Middletons (Reuben Middleton) and BUTLER families had settled near Far West and were expelled in the winter of 1838/39. they then went back to Wash. Co. They later moved up to Nauvoo IL in the spring of 1840 (he is not in 1840 Wash. Co. census), where they followed farming until the spring of 1846, when they were again driven out west and remained at or near Council Bluffs untill the spring of 1850. They then crossed the plains and arrived at Salt Lake 22 Sept. 1850" Another quote is in there by his grandson Chas. F. b. 24 Feb. 1834 Owkawville: " My father (William) was b. 1804 St. Clair Co. My parents and grandparents on both sides joined the Morman Church in the fall of 1834" My gg grandfather (b. 1834 Nashville) was not among this group, as all in family did not want to join the Mormans. BUT, is there a good chance other Wash. Co. surnames went west and vanished from the census after 1830 ???? If so, try Hancock Co. IL (Nauvoo) or even UTAH ??? Hope the dates help, as I've been told, people traveled in groups. ??? Reuben was one of the first men appointed to oversee the running of the "new" Washington Co. 1818, and was there even before 1810. That's all the Wash. Co. Morman migration info I have. Robert J. Middleton. .
