I think Robert is right. I am a cousin of State Senator David Luechtefeld and I will write him a letter. But I am also going to get in contact with a cousin or two in Washington County who can spread the word. I also think that those who have access to the phone book for Washington County should post on this list the addresses for contact persons for the groups (and others) that Robert mentioned. I think if youlook in the Nashville News you may also find some there. If you can do this, then we can write these people and let them know the status and state of the records. Russell
I liked Robert's idea so much that I decide to prepare a petition to take to my family reunion. I think it would be wise if all the petitions we start are worded the same. I am not suggesting that mine is perfect and if anyone else has another idea lets hear it. we can even combine several different ideas into one or whatever BUT lets start something. Here's my idea. What do you think? This is only to be signed by LEGALLY REGISTERED VOTERS OF THE COUNTY. I know this leaves us out but, I think it will carry more weight with the Courthouse. I called my Courthouse and there are no laws governing these in Illinois. Lets hear what you think. Delores Riley WE, the registered voters of Washington County, Illinois, do hereby petition the Officers of this County to safeguard our County Records by allowing them to be microfilmed by Illinois Regional Archives (IRAD). Thus, protecting them from catastrophic destruction by FIRE, TORNADO, EARTHQUAKE, or other natural or manmade destruction. Insuring that our families records will be preserved for our use and that of our descendants in the future.
You didn't say what you were printing. Sometimes mine does that in a document I've typed if I have moved the cursor down far enough to go on a second page and when I back the cursor up to the last character typed it gets the document back to one page then it doesn't send the extra page through. That's probably too simple to be your problem. Dear Listers: After reading letters on the mail list, and some private email from Wash. Co. in the last couple of days, I have formed my personal opinion on how I would approach the matter of the release of the court house records for archiving/preserving. That means ALL of them. Yes I was informed last year that there are records there we do not see (stored in boxes), and are in too delicate a condition to be handled by the public. This was told to me by a resident of Wash. Co. who has viewed the court house records many many times over the past many years. Opinion: Get the Pro's in to deal with these mystery records. (IRAD) Opinion, I feel it highly unwise to HASSLE the court house by bombarding them with letters. I think this would only get their backs up and make things worse. Opinion: I feel the answer to this lies within the people of Washington Co., and if I lived there, I would start talking to them about the preservation of the old records right today. Not the court house, but the people of the county. Before I go further, I would NOT, I say again NOT, mention anything about putting the records on the INTERNET, that would come later if and when they ever did arrive at IRAD. If you poled the people of the county about putting records on the internet they would immediately be "put off", and there goes sympathetic support for the main objective, "preserve the records". My object would be to get the BACKING of the people of Washington Co. for the sole purpose of having a backup copy of the records stored at an alternate location, so they would not be lost forever in the event of some catastrophe at the court house. i.e.: fire/flood/tornado/comet from the sky, et al. These records should be safeguarded for ALL, including future generations, and should be accessible to the public, including any that might be stored in boxes in the basement, out of site. (Will throw this in, I myself would drop the words genealogy/genealogists, and say I was (my) family historian, researching my family Washington Co. "roots"). Opinion: The people who have made the decision not to release the records to IRAD are not the majority, the "voters" of the county are. We need them. Opinion: Bring the preservation of the records to the attention of the people of the county through "sympathetic" media coverage, and through the backing of any service organizations in the county. Such as (don't know what they have there?) The Legion (Vets) SAR/DAR Kiwanis Eagles Lions Chamber of Commerce Scouts and Guides (and others) Ask them for a vote of support at their meetings, and put it in writing. Think about circulating a well organized "save the records petition". (take a petition to your family reunion John, get them all to sign twice) I can't go on with this forever, hope I made a point. The people who live in the county or who have family in the county have the solution to this. Get your heads together on this preservation of records matter. Write or phone your relatives in the county and get their support. Get some signs and walk up and down in front of the court house, the "tree/cougar/bear/whale/everything huggers" out here do it. (media attention). To me the key is with the "voters" of the county, did they not vote into office the "people who say "NO" to IRAD ??? Once again, keep the subject of records on the Internet OUT OF IT for now. We on the mail list and the people at the court house are a minority. The majority are the people of the county. They might have to be the ones who can achieve our goal. Robert J. Middleton Robert John Middleton P.O. Box 1114 Ladysmith, B.C. Marci- Thank you for all you've done and definitely to the Hintons. Washington Co. has been one of the more difficult counties to research, so all efforts are appreciated to help us across the country. Linda
Linda and ALL That is not MY web Page, but the Web Page Of the "GREAT HINTON".......Wayne and Marie have done ALOT for Washington, as well as alot of other counties!!! He and she are a wonder. I (most humbly) have just submitted data for him....... I have watched this debate over release of records for quite a while (since last year), but I can't recall seeing the answer to this: What exactly is the County's excuse for not microfilming the records? I recall that they were worried the records would be taken away but the respose to that was that the LDS would come on site and film everything there at no cost to them. It seems to me that this would alleviate all their problems of time, genealogists 'bothering' them, the work overload from our letters and requests and also preserve the records that are deteriorating in the basement. Folks, Before you declare a war on the Washington Co courthouse, they will let a person in to search their books. Deaths;Dec 1977-Feb of 1979 Births; 1877-1920 Marriages; I'm unsure of the cut off, but I got thru the 1800's. I won't say they necessarily encourage it, but after I'd been there a few times, behaved properly ( other than an occasional outburst), and made every effort to limit the space I took up, they have since been very helpful. They have a very small counter space to work with and must conduct they're usual business of the circuit clerks' office. Honest, three people in that little area is very crowded. MAYBE a 3' x 6' area. I can assure you that trying to involve Chicago will definitely cause tempers to flare. Chicago seems to be unaware of the southern part of the state. I to would like their records online, as my work schedule doesn't allow for much research time on their schedule of 8 to 4. I believe I can find an address or phone # if anyone is interested. Marci is absolute right. When I went to visit the Washington County Courthouse last fall, I was by all appearances a novice genealogist. But I had my trump card: the voice of experience of the members of the Illinois Washington County Roots Web list. So all of you folks, listen up to the voice of experience (or fustration :). In my humble opinion, the staff of the Washington County Courthouse is not equiped to handle the flood of genealogical requests. If you do not know what you are looking for, then they do not have the time to help you. If you do, then they'll bring the AVAILABLE records out to you to view and photocopy. Notice the word AVAILABLE. There is still a problem in Washington County where official records have been lost, damaged, destroyed, and not recorded onto microfilm. In my humble opinion, this is a BIG problem. And Marci's efforts are important and could have a big impact. I have personally seen the marriage index and marriage register and they are pitiful. Notice that I did not say marriage records. The rumor is that they are stored in the Washington County Courthouse basement in boxes, unindexed, unrecorded, and unprotected. Unless there is a compelling legal requirement for public access to those records (Probate being the immediate exception), then (in my humble opinion) the Washington County Clerk is not going to do anything out of the ordinary to help purely genealogical research. I have personally met with the current Washington County Clerk. He is not opposed to genealogical efforts, but he has neither the staff, time, or money to support those efforts. He and other members of the County board understand our desires, but are unable to facilitate a solution. Our only recourse is through Illinois State channels. But time is a-wasting. I almost missed your email. This Georg Hundelt ws born in Bad Laer in 1822, and married Clara b. Glandorf He had anywhere from 7 to 9 children. (They [the current Hundelt researchers] are wondering if my grandfather and his sister may have been the two they can't account for, and I think that's likely as it happened around the time the oldest brother of my grandfather and his sister died - leaving them orphans.) One of their children was named Henry Hundelt. He married Theresia and they had 9 children of which one was William Joseph. I have a date of 3/17/1898 in St. Libory and dod 1957 age 59 in St. Louis, buried in St. Libory. I also have a date of death of 1991, but I don't know to whom that goes. The man with whom I was in contact was m. in 1965 and has one son and one daughter. I don't know if this ties in with your relatives. That's really about all the info he gave me. Jerry
I too was able to receive probate records from a very kindl worker in Washington Co. records. Even got a copy. I was looking for my gggrandfather William D. Pitchford 's children and found what was a good clue that the Harrison Pitchford was his son. Does anyone have a clue to this or of any other of his children.Belt W.

Russell: A little tidbit: My grandfather grew up in both the Mud Creek/St. Libory area and Lively Grove TWP in Wash. Co. He and his sister were orphaned at a young age and guardianship papers were taken out by Georg and Klara Hundelt. I found him on the 1880 census with a son of Georg and Klara listed as laborer. I believe George to have been acquainted with my great grandfather as they were both from Laer, Kingdom of Hannover at the time of emigration. Jerry Timmons Russell D.
