The ancestor who has me stumped is Mary or Maria (Herrmann) Grossmann. I think she died in Washington County between 1870 and 1880. She was married to Johan (John) Grossmann. They are on the 1870 census for Washington County. By 1880 the father has moved back to St. Louis, leaving the two youngest girls with unrelated families. On the 1880 census their daughter, my gg grandmother, is listed as Malia Groszman in Covington, Washington Co.. Amalia Marie (Grossmann) Pries was born in Mascoutah July 10, 1866. Her father was Swiss; they were Lutheran. Her mother is listed variously, but was most likely from Baden. Her father was a butcher by trade. We are unable to find either father or mother on a passenger list and have been unable to locate them in Europe. Any data on the mother's death or town of origin for either parent would be welcome.
