I'm guessing that rhematic fever has nothing to do with John's father's death, but rather is the cause of death for John, himself. And, I think your initial suspicion will pan out to be a correct one in that "John D. Handley" of the household of Jas. W and Mary Handley in the 1880 census could very well indeed be the man in the Pape database listed as John Hanley. If that is the case, then "your" John Handley would be my granduncle. His younger sister Maggie is my grandmother as she is the Maggie Claypool of the Mary (Jenkins) Hanley death notice for which I posted the link in my earlier post. Hope this helps!
