    2. Catherine, I have a Smith line from Vermilion co., Illinois (usually Butler and Middlefork twps). I don't know of a Patrick, but I would sure love to be able to connect to some one from my Smith line. This is my line: John B. Smith..b. abt. 1810 in New Jersey mrd. Susannah Liggett in Fountain co., Indiana abt. 1836 John B. Smith and Susannah had Abner E., Rachel, Nancy C., Elizabeth, Phillip, Mahala and Sarah. Abner is my gr grandfather and was born in 1840, Indiana. He married Nancy Jane Rutledge in Vermilion co., Illinois in 1894. They had lived together for about 14 years prior to their marriage. Abner and Nancy Jane had John Wililam Smith, who is my grandfather, married Ethel Ione Pulber. Some of my Smith line ended up in Appanoose, Wapello and Tama counties in Iowa. Other surnames that are connected to my Smith line are: Huffman Searles Riegel Watts Lyon possibly Bevers, Haney and Rogers Sure hope something sounds familiar to you. 3. Chebow1 - Regarding your Smith....I have a Mahala Smith too but she was born about 1800 and married Benjamin Harris in 1826 in Lawrence Co IN. They too lived in Vermilion Co IL, in Middlefork Twp and are on the 1860 census there. The census says that Mahala was born in KY. I saw your Mahala name and thought there MIGHT be a connection since they were in the same township. Any help you can give me would be great - as I don't have a clue which SMITH family she is from. I did get a death certificate for one of her children and it had Mahala's maiden name as SCHMIDT. I know that they Americanized their names a lot back then. Looking forward to hearing from you.
