Shari: What names are you researching in Danville/Hoopston? My father and his ancestors were also there at the same time as yours.. my father was born in Danville in 1935; his name is Wendall Smith, and his father's name was Thomas Patrick Smith; his father's name was Charles Smith; and his father's name was Thomas Smith. Thomas was from England; and Charles lived in New York; but Thomas Patrick and my father were from Danville. They had a farm. I haven't been there since I was a child; so can't tell you what to see. Wish I were going, but a bit of a trip from Denver! Katrina EJUC8@aol.com wrote: > I am planning a trip to the Danville area in the next couple of weeks. The Vermilion County Historical Society is probably your best bet for research. Don't expect anything out of County Clerk's office unless you want to buy copies of everything with the name you are looking for and then see if they contain anything useful. This is the worst place I have ever visited for information. Walt Conner EJUC8@aol.com wrote: > I am planning a trip to the Danville area in the next couple of weeks. The ILLIANA GENEALOGY LIBRARY at 215 W. North St. In Danville, Ill Has burials of Vermilion Counties, Census Records, Marriages,1827 to 1899. Family History Files to name just a few. It is open 10-4 Mon thru Sat and on Tuesdays til 8 p.m. If you know what cemeteries you want, they have a locator with directions to the cemetery. Also in the burials they often have a map of the cemetery with location of the burial if the person had a headstone.. Hoopeston still has a library and Rossville also has a Historical Society. The IGHS also has centenial books on surrounding towns. What is your goal while in Danville? Any deaths between 1916 and 1945 you can get non certified death certificates from the Illinois State Archives, Springfield, Ill. and the cost is .50 compared to the County Clerk's office which is $7.00. They also have pedigree files which could help you in your research of family members. Granny=Danville, Ill.
I am planning a trip to the Danville area in the next couple of weeks. It is over 100 miles away and I don't have a lot of time. I would like to be as organized as possible to make the best use of my time. My father was born in Hoopston in 1930. My Grandfather was born in East Lynn in 1906 and my Grandmother was born in Hoopston in 1911. I have a GGrandmother born in Paxton in 1889, the other great grandparents I have very little information about. I will be looking for vital records and also visiting cemetaries. I will be taking pictures of the area also. Any help on places to visit, and places not to miss will be greatly appreciated. I have not been to this area in many years. When I was a child there was an annual family reunion (The Collins, Christensen, McVicker I believe it was called) that we went to but, of course, I was not interested in genealogy then and did not spend much time with the older reletives. I do remember my Dad had a cousin who was deaf. I also remember an Aunt Lucille, Uncle Spencer. Thank you for any help in making my trip more successful. Shari
My dear family, friends, and fellow seekers, A new virus is out (I didn't even bother to get it's name), so I thought that this might be a good time to remind everyone to protect themselves. It is particularly important in a community like ours where we are much more freely passing information between people that we meet on-line. It also means that we could accidently spread a virus rather quickly. As with most things, Common Sense is important. 1). Do NOT open an attached document on ANY un-solicited e-mail. It doesn't matter if it says you are going to receive millions of dollars by doing. Just don't do it. Also, if you receive an e-mail that seems a little strange from someone you know -- it may not be written like that person usually writes -- don't open it until you contact that person. 2). Do NOT click on the unsuscribe button or any other web link on un-solicited e-mail. It can take you places that you don't want to go to. 3). Backup your precious data regularly. I keep all of my data and documents under a directory called "Data" with sub-directories for the various tasks (Genealogy, Music, Recipes, etc.) That way, all I have to do to backup all of my data is to copy the "Data" directory to floppy's (my new computer has the 120 meg floppy drive which is great.) I'm not constantly backing up all of my program files and I don't have to look all over the hard-drive to find all of my data underneath individual program directories. 4). Get a good virus protection program. This computer came with McAffee but I also have Norton on other computers. They are not that expensive and can really help to keep you safe. 5). The Documents that you need to be most concerned about are those which are created in programs that have a full-featured Macro or Program language and that you use the program with those features to read. Also you need to be careful of running ".EXE" programs or documents. These programs include "MS Word", "MSExcel", "MSOffice", etc. (the list is by no means exhaustive. You should always read Word Documents ".DOC" in Word Viewer or QuickView first (if you don't have it, it should be available on the internet). Notepad and WordPad have no macro language so reading text files in those programs should be fairly safe. Also, .GED (GEDCOM) files are actually text files in a particular format, they have no program commands in them. Also, if you are attaching files to someone else, it is best to attach them as plain text files (Notepad or WordPad readable files) until you and the other person have agreed to share the version in a full-featured word-processor from. I don't mean to scare anyone, but I thought that some ideas for a little prevention might just get everyone thinking. We can keep this wonderful media for sharing our family and our-selves safe for everyone with just a little caution and common sense. Happy Hunting, Scott Pittman rsprgv@aol.com

I have found an ASA RAMSEY shown as "father" on the 1880 Vermilion Co, Illinois census. He is listed with the family of REUBEN RAMSEY. By the time this family can be relocated ..now in Arkansas, ASA is no longer with them. Is there any online source of cemeteries for Vermilion Co that I may search? Would there be a death index for the county at those times. I would guess he died there and am trying to figure out enough information to get a death record of some sort in hopes of finding out who his parents were. So, looking for a place to write, a person to do a search ... a website .. or any ... or all .. of the above. ron At 07:11 PM 6/10/99 EDT, you wrote: >The IGHS cuts out all obits and pastes them in giant scrapbooks...here is >their address along with other possibilities...good luck! > >Contacts in the Danville, Illinois Area > > >Danville Public Library >319 N Vermilion >Danville, IL 61832 >217-477-5228 > >Danville - Illiana Genealogical and Historical Society >PO Box 207 >Danville, IL 61832 >217-431-8733 >email - IGHS@DANVILLE.NET >Website - http://www.danvillevirtual.com/ > >Rossville Historical Society >103 W Attica >Rossville, IL 60963 >217-748-4080 > >Other Rossville Contact: For anyone interested in Rossville, IL check out >www.rossville.com > >Museum of Vermilion County (large history/genealogy section) >116 N Gilbert >Danville, IL 61832 >217-442-2922 > > >Post Queries for this county at: >http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Vermilion > > >==== ILVERMIL Mailing List ==== >Vermilion County, Illinois >The ILGenWeb Project >http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilvermil/ > > >
Hi Listers, My family and I are going on a genealogy vacation this August. My g-g-grandmother, Vernie Charley Griffin, lived at 1010 Franklin and I was wondering if anyone knew if that house is still there today. I would love to get a picture of it for my scrapebook. She lived there with her daughter Marion Griffin Swift. Margie Wamak@aol.com
Thanks to AllisonGen@aol.com I believe my question has been well answered and so quickly too! Thanks so much Sue

Hello everyone, Can you tell me how to best go about obtaining first a death certificate for my relatives who passed about in Danville, IL in 1982 and 1978? Right now I only have the month and year of death from the Social Security death index. After I get the exact date of death I would also like to order a copy of the obits, does your library or newspaper do this for a fee? Or is there an obit index somewhere? Arthur Dennis NORTON d. July 1982 Dennis Arthur NORTON d Aug. 1978 Thank you for any suggestions you can offer. Susan in Chicago researching NORTON, MORTELL, PRAIS and DONDA

I went to school in Hoopeston with a Vacketta. The 1997 Hoopeston Phone Directory still had one Vacketta listed. You should be able to get the number and address through a phone search mechanism, or through information to see if they are still there. Scott Pittman rsprgv@aol.com

Granny, Thank you for your reply. Yes I do seem to recall seeing the Obit for Mario Stefani. And would you believe that Mario Stefani is my grandfather's name as well? This is obviously a different one; My GF passed away in 1985. But as much as this hobby comes up with odd coincidences, I never discount them as such right away. I have found that in my family, and in many other Italian families, there is a strong custom of naming children after one of their grandparents. So when I see the same given names showing up in someone else's Stefani-tree, I have to wonder if I have distant relatives there I don't know about. Anyways, thanks for the reply and I'll see what I can do to get in-contact with some of these folks in Illinois. Regards, John C. Greetings! While searching Rootsweb for the surname OLDANI, I came up with the following Obit posting..... Mary Louise Vacketta, 95 of Westville died 4/13 1999 in Danville. B 4/9 1904 in Westville d/o John and Clara Brusatti Oldani. She married George Vacketta 12/20 1930 in Danville, he preceded her 8/20 1958. Burial Spring Hill Cemetery, Danville. Both the OLDANI and BRUSATTI surnames run in my family tree. And although I have no idea at this moment who the Vacketta family is, I'd sure like to know, obviously wondering if there's some link there. Is there anyone on the list who is researching this surname in the Danville area, or knows of someone who is? Regards, John C. Stefani Windsor, Ontario, Canada ------------------------- John C. John: I have no information about the Vackettas but my mother lives in Danville and has some friends named Vacketta who are probably related. I can perhaps get an address or phone number from her. I think they might live between Danville and Westville. It may take a while as I live in SC. Hopefully within the next week I can find them - if lucky, they may have an e-mail address. This Mary Louise may have been his mother. Marv Hoppin hoppinm@aol.com
