1. [ILVERMIL-L] RE: Vermilion Co. Records
2. I just recently wrote to the IRAD (Illinois Regional Archive Depository -- or something like that). They charge $1.00 for the first 5 pages copied and $.08 for additional copies from paper and $.10 for those from micro-film. While I don't have their web address with handy, you can find a link to them on the first page of the USGenWeb site for IL < http://www.usgenweb.org/il>. There is a ".PDF" file (Adobe Acrobat Reader) which tells which IRAD to write to for the various areas (Vermilion is at ISU) and what records are available for each county. The letter which I received with one of the documents which I requested (the other wasn't available) gave me the address for the Iroquois County Genealogical Society as a possible source for the other record. Also, payment is on the honor system -- they sent me the copies and told me what I needed to send in payment rather than sending me the bill and waiting until it was received to send the copies. I strongly suggest that you try that. Scott Pittman rsprgv@aol.com

3. I'm glad you had good luck. I haven't been at this very long but in the 1 Court House in OH, 4 in IN and the other 3 in IL that I have visited, I either was taken to the vault and shown where the records were or books were brought to me at the counter. At Vermilion I was only allowed to look at a card file and if I saw something I wanted it was (I believe) $7 to get a copy to see if it was even my family. Since I had many family members in that county at one time and there are several families with the same name but no known connection, I was unable to accomplish anything. The parents and spouse on the Death Record are often the only way of telling if it is the right family. In Edgar Co., just South of there, I have been given free access to Birth Records (over 75 yrs old) Death Records, Marriage Records, Military Records, Land Records and Probate Records. $1 for copies. I seldom make copies but copy the info and record where the info was found. In Ohio Co. IN, copies of the first 4 Death Records were free and .50 ea. for all over that by comparison! 3. Hi Walt, When I visited in Danville two years ago, I visited the County Clerk's office, which I had already had extensive correspondence with and telephone conversations with, and the court house across the street. I have to say that there is a big difference between the two locations and that Machelle Long at the Clerk's office was the nicest person I have dealt with in obtaining vital records. The nice thing was that for all the records I obtained through the mail, I never had to pay for something that wasn't mine. Machelle would fill out a card and send it to me and ask me if I thought that person was mine. If I thought it was, I was to send back the $7. I never had to pay $7 and then find out. When I arrived in person, they allowed me to go through all the card catalogs and copy information and then when it came to getting death certificates, they had me give them the info on the ones I thought might be mine and then looked them up. I wasn't allowed to look at them first, of course, but they then made copies of the ones I asked for. I have to say that they were very gracious and patient with me. It turns out that one of the birth records I couldn't find before was actually there. My great-grandparents had first named my greataunt something else and not the name we always knew her by. So, I was glad I came in person and went through the vital record cards. The court house across the street is a different story. They are much more bureaucratic and not used to dealing with the public. It took me quite some time to get the records I needed from them (a will, some divorce papers, and a naturalization record). I had requested the naturalization record a year before, paid for it, and it was never sent. It turns out no one wanted to look for it because it was in the basement. I ended up going through dozens of dusky, musty old books in the basement before finding it. They made me do all my own copying. But, after spending a couple of hours with me, the staff did start to warm up to me and finally let me take a picture with them to take home with me. It was amazing to me the difference between the two different departments right across the street from one another. It just seemed like two different philosophies. Michele

3. If you have only one or two records you are interested in and don't mind paying a substantial amount ($7 or so ea.) the Vermilion Co. Court House (annex) may be OK. This is the least accommodating place I have ever visited for records and would recommend them only as a last resort. 3. Hi, The FHL Catalog is on file at the LDS genealogy site. www.familysearch.org. I haven't been into the online catalog yet since I use my local FHC library so I'm not totally sure how to use it but most of the stuff online is easy to walk through. 3. Hello: I am searching for Howell Davis who accompanied his brother Gideon C. Davis from Bucks Co. PA to Vermillion Co. IL, around 1856. I have found him in the 1870 US Census listing in Grant Twp. At that time Howell was 33 yrs. with family. I would like to know if he is mentioned in a history of the area, and if there are any others who are searching this particular Davis branch. Thanks, Judy Berreth <edjudy@clearwater.net>

2. Dear Scott, I believe the "Silver Bros. Lumber Yard" you spoke of is one that belongs to descendants of this same SILVER branch. In fact, I'm going to Illinois in Aug. too, but southern Illinois. I do plan on visiting Georgetown to visit a distant cousin, Ray Silver, who is related to the ones with the Silver Lumber Co. I'd appreciate any info. you learn about the THEOBOLDS or SILVERs. Thanks. Beth

2. Hi Beth, I'm originally from Hoopeston and those names so sound familiar. For years there was "Silver Bros Lumber Yard" in the town. I also remember the name Theobald but at the moment I can't quite place who it was. I'll ask Mother when I call her Sunday to see what she remembers. Also, I'm going to Hoopeston in Aug. so I'll see what I stumble accross when I'm up there. Scott Pittman rsprgv@aol.com
