    1. [ILVERMIL] RE:Dukes, Ellis, Lacey, Haworth, Smith, Black, Stark Families of Vermillion, IL
    2. Hello, I'm researching my family in the Vermillion area. It seems it was a popular destination for a lot of my ancestors. Here is what I have been able to surmise: In 1824, Stephen Dukes purchased land in Clark County, Illinois. This is the first appearance that I can find of him. On 12/29/1825 Rachel L. Ellis married Stephen Dukes in Edgar County, Illinois. In 1826 he purchased land in Edgar County. In 1830 and 1839 he purchased land in Vermillion County, Illinois. He appears as the head of household in Vermillion County in 1830 and 1840. I have been unable to locate him in a census before that. Rachel and Stephen had 11 children: Mary, Ellis, Sarah, John, James, Louis, Susannah, Asa, Richard, William D., and Stephen. Stephen passed away in 1846/47 as is buried in Dukes Cemetery in Vermillion County. Recently someone emailed me the directions to this Cemetery. Common names in the Cemetery are Lacey, Dukes, Ellis, and Haworth. Rachel's parents were Shobal Ellis and Sarah Wright. I have come across plenty of information on Sarah's family. However, Shobal is quite a mystery. He appears in the 1800 census for TN and the 1810 census for Ohio. He purchased land in Vermillion County in 1822, 1823, and 1830. He according to an ancestral file submittal died in 1831 in Vermillion County, Illinois. Sarah and Shobal had 9 children: Rachel, Wright, Catharine, Julian, John, Susannah, Sarah, Ruth, and Barbary. Apparently a couple of other children besides Rachel relocated to Vermillion with their parents. Concerning Stephen and Rachel's children: 1) Mary Dukes born 21 Dec 1826 in Vermillion 2) Ellis Dukes: married Nancy Bowen Cook 3) Sarah Dukes married Richard Haworth. They or their children may have relocated to California. Pearl Dukes of California (William Lacey Dukes, John Dukes, Stephen Dukes). Had several letters from a Hannah Haworth in her scrapbook. 4) John Dukes: b. 21 March 1832 m. Ruby Lacey. They had 9 children. He is listed as head of household in the 1870 census for Georgetown, Vermillion County, Illinois. His neighbor was his Uncle William D. Dukes who was single. However, he did have his mother Rachel living with him. Between 1872 and 1884. They relocated to Alpena, Jerauld County, South Dakota. John Dukes participated in the 1884 Jerauld County Fair. He purchased land in Beadle County in 1890. There is some beginning evidence that he served in the state legislature in 1891 from Beadle County. I have not confirmed his death date yet, but Ruby and John are buried in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Jerauld County. Their children: Rachel, Sarah, Mary, Martha, Susanna, William Lacey, James, Nancy, and an infant who died after childbirth. Rachel married James Black, Sarah married Robert L. Brooks, Mary married Jon Black, Martha married Edward Stark, Susannah married William Stark, William Lacey married Martha Eshleman, and Nancy married James Everett Smith. Ruby Lacey's parents were William Lacey born in New Jersey and died[according to a note by a fellow researcher] in 27 Sept 1873 in Vermillion County. His wife was Saloma/Salona Sanderson of New York. She passed away in 28 Dec 1859. They came to Illinois in 1853 I don't know the name of any other of their children besides Ruby. 5) James Dukes died in San Diego, California in 1899. He willed his land in South Dakota to his brother William D. Dukes. His descendants were actively involved in the Ramona Congretional church in San Diego 6) Louis Dukes: Rumor has it that he relocated to San Diego, California as well 7) Susannah Dukes m. George Underwood 8) Asa Dukes: ? 9) Richard Dukes: He may have served in 35 Infantry from Georgetown, Vermillion County in the Civil War 10) William D. Dukes: Head of household in 1870 census, single. His mother Rachel was residing with him. He relocated to San Diego. 11) Stephen Dukes:? I would appreciate any information or suggestions on the above families. In particular, is there a library that contains the probate/will records of Vermillion residents? I tried searching through what IRAD offered on line, but couldn't find anything. I am particularly interested in Shobal Ellis, Rachel and Stephen Dukes, and Willaim Lacey's will or probate records. -Thank You Jayson Young

    1. [ILVERMIL] Marriage records
    2. I am in need of help in locating a marriage record for my ggfather Jacob Henry FRANCE. He married Mary Elizabeth PHILLIPS of Paxton, IL around 1886. His sister Amanda FRANCE was married to Morris BOCKOVEN in Elliott, IL. Mary Elizabeth's family farmed outside of Paxton(Button Twp) and had a home and farm also at Rankin, IL. I have checked the online database but nothing is there. The minister may not have made the return or possibly it was a church record only. The PHILLIPS family were Presbyterians. They arrived in Ford Co. around 1867 and Mary Elizabeth was born there in 1868. I am also looking for possible cemetery records for the death of John FRANCE in 1884. Thank you for your help. 3. >There is a 2 book set of Goodner Family History. I don't know where >you are located but I assume maybe Vermilion Co. I have one of the two set Goodner families. My John Johnson married Susan Goodner, daughter of John and Margaret Swisher Goodner 27 Dec. 1848. John Goodner and his family were in Vermilion County, IL when he died about 1829-31. Henry's father was John Goodner and Margaret Swisher. Henry was a brother to my great great grandmother. Your Sara Ann Goodner, daughter of Jacob Goodner and Hester White. Hester was the first wife of Jacob, son of Peter and Mary Goodner. Jacob was born about 1776-1839. 2nd wife was Mary Ann Harwood, 3rd was Mr.s Zilpah Laforce. This is according to the Goodner Book Vol I. Also according to the book, Jacob moved to Switzerland Co., IN 1815 or 1816. Jacob apparently died in Switzerland Co., IN in the later part of 1839. His third wife remarried April 30, 1840 to Dana Jacobs, still Switzerland Co., IN. I haven't read far enough to tell you when they came to Illinois. Carol Hicks

    1. [ILVERMIL] Charles Paul Foxworthy, Danville IL
    2. Cheryl Helm
    3. I'm looking for the third wife and any children of my grandfather, Charles Paul Foxworthy, b. 31 May 1893, Fountain Co., IN. He married (1) Blanche Weir in Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co, IN in 1917, and they had one daughter Harriet Aileen Foxworthy. Blanche died about 6 months after Aileen was born, and Paul married Bertha Susan Walden in Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co., IN in 1920. Their oldest son, Charles Paul Foxworthy Jr (Charles) was born in Crawfordsville IN in 1921 and then they moved to Danville, Vermillion, IL where they had two more children: my mother, Lois Imogene Foxworthy (1924) and William Jackson Foxworthy. Paul divorced Bertha, probably in 1946 and married a woman who worked in his abstract business in Danville. All I know about his third wife is that she was of Italian heritage and that in order to marry his third wife in the Catholic Church, my grandfather had his marriage to my grandmother Bertha Susan annulled (presumably by the Church, not a legal annulment). The social security death index gives 1968 as his date of death. If anyone is researching this line or has any information on Paul's oldest son Charles and his children, I'd appreciate anything you can share. Thanks Cheryl Helm

    3. Mr. Conner & others, I am descended from Peter Cossart b. Aug 30 1746 in N.J. who migrated to KY. (He was later killed in an Indian attack on their settlement between 1781 and 1783.) Virginia Shank Wilson, a cousin, did a lot of research and wrote a book which gives the lineage of the Cossart family back to France. I'm fortunate enough to own a copy. She states that Peter's sons were the first to use the spelling Cossairt. There is an Albert Cossairt m. Magdalena Banta, 2nd Mary Driscle. Albert had a son named Henry. Albert died in Illinois Oct. 11, 1857. This may not mesh exactly with your information, but I have no children's names for Albert. He could be your ancestor, as he uses the same spelling as your family, and was in Danville. But, there are a lot of relatives who also came to the Danville area. I also have detailed information on a lot of other Cosat/Cossart/Cossairt/Cozatts! If anyone needs help, I'll try to help. Please be patient, as I work full-time and take night classes. 2. Walt Conner
    3. Thanks for the information. As for Goodners, at least 4 of my family members married Goodners and of course they had children. In a quick glance thru your message, I did not see familiar names. In fact you have Henry born in Vermilion Co., in 1824 and I don't think the Goodners related to our line would have been in Edgar Co., or Vermilion before mid 1830s. There is a 2 book set of Goodner Family History. I don't know where you are located but I assume maybe Vermilion Co. Jack Goodner of Danville has a set of these books, he is on line, but he is not the least bit interested in genealogy. I don't know if he would consider lending them to you or not. I was told they sold for around $100. If you are around Danville, you might also check the Illiana (sp?) Genealogical Society located in Danville. The error rate for information pertaining to our Conner line is very high in what I have seen of these books. I only have copies of a few pages pertaining to one marriage in particular but have seen other info. My GGGrandmother was Sara Ann Goodner, born in Gallatin Co., KY, Aug 1, 1812, daughter of Jacob Goodner and Hester White. She married John Conner Dec 23, 1828, in Dearborn Co., IN, and they came to Edgar Co., IL in 1835. John's brother Moses, married Margaret Jane Goodner, Feb 28, 1839 in Edgar Co., she was born in Dearborn Co., IN. Another brother, Jacob Conner married Rachael Goodner, also daughter of Jacob Goodner and Hester White on Oct 20, 1836 in Dearborn Co., she was born in Switzerland Co., IN. Sister, Catherine Conner married Michael Goodner, Dec 24, 1828, in Dearborn Co., IN. Michael, son of Jacob Goodner and Hester White was born Mar 4, 1807 in Gallatin Co., KY. Jacob Goodner may have had a brother who came to Vermilion Co., earlier. Do you know who Henry's parents were? In our line, Conners, Goodners and Lights came to Edgar Co.and Vermilion Co., IL, from Dearborn Co., IN, (now Ohio Co.) in the mid 1830s as best we can tell. Let me know if I can be of help.
