Lois, do you have the marriage license document for William K. Cotton? I checked with the Library Archives and they don't have newspapers for 1849. They have a few from 1833-35, but very little. I talked with the librarian this morning and they are going to run a search for me. What documents, if any, do you have for Robert Cotton? Both of them and their son Forrest are buried in Greenwood Cemtery off of 14th Street in Danville, IL. Their son Lester and his Theodora and their children Lester, Jr., Lena and Russell are also buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Jacob and Nancy also had another son (my grandfather) Herschel Winland born 7/15/1900 and died 1/25/1997. I know that Nancy was born on February 15, 1863 but I will have to go to the cemetery to find out when she died. Jacob was born on March 7, 1860 or 1861 (I will find out for sure) and died June 17, 1930
This is a guess--only a guess--but it sounds like he was either buying or selling on commission. Considering that the buying and selling of grain was very important to Illinois during what was probably the most productive time of his life and Chicago was the big grain marketplace, consider that.
