Surnames: sconce palmer jones fanning perry Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3g.2ADI/4513.1.1 Message Board Post: Unfortunately, I do not have the first name of the Sconce in question. I discovered him while I was researching Lincoln's activities as a lawyer in Danville and in Vermilion County. The two references I found involved cases in 1850 and in 1851. After this time Lincoln's partner was Lemon or Lamon and they had an office in Danville. I was trying to make a connection between this early law partner of Lincoln's and another lawyer named John H. Sconce. John H. Sconce married Emily A. Palmer abt. 1849 Danville. She was the daughter of Norman D. Palmer and the neice of Asa R. Palmer both of Danville. The John H. Sconce family is found in the 1850 census of Vermilion county where he is listed as a lawyer. John H. Sconce and family emigrated to Oregon Territoy in 1852. John H. Sconce had one child, a daughter, Anna B. Sconce, 1 year of age in the census. In Anna's obituary it is said her father died 1856 in The Dalles, Wasco Co., Oregon, however, no periodicals exist from the time period nor is there any record of his burial in the area at the Wasco Co. Court House.

    1. RE: [ILVERMIL] William K. Cotton
    2. Barbara Wylie
    3. During that time, male guardians were often appointed for children whose father had died. That did not indicate that the mother was dead--even if they were called orphans--or incompetent. Women didn't have the same legal standing as men so a male was appointed to see to that. The guardian didn't have to be a relative but often was. You will want to follow these children through the term of their guardianship. At some age--often 14--children had some say in who their guardian would be. As each came of age, there should be a court action ending the guardianship. If there was any estate left, that child would receive his share at that time. I found the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records for them living in Cumberland County (Sumpter), Vermilion County (Danville), and Clark County (Casey). I am interested in finding cemetery locations and transcriptions, obituaries, marriage information, and the 1930 census records for them. I would also like to find the parents of Joseph Dixon and Rebecca Houser and any census records before the 1900 census. Any help would be greatly appeciated.
