Hello, I am away from home for the next week without access to my records--but thank you so much for replying to my email! Family lore has it that his mother was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian named Martha who married Jesse Burris sometime around 1820, probably in Tennessee, but possibly in North Carolina. I have looked many, many places trying to discover her maiden name, but not luck. She died about 1837, not too long after her last child, Jasper Daniel Burris was born in TN. Jesse Burris remarried in Wayne county KY to Matida UNK McClain. I can't remember the date, but I think it was about 1843. Jesse presumably died in Wayne county sometime between 1860 and 1870. Jasper Daniel Burris's widow, Francis Elizabeth Denney Burris (Lizzie) is not buried in Camp Ground cemetery. I can't remember without my files where she was buried, but I know she died in Alexander county IL in about 1927. I have not found any other relatives buried in Campground cemetery. Jasper Daniel was at one point in his life was a preacher, but mostly made his living as a farmer in first KY, then IL. I have long suspected that he is in Campground either because of a connection through his mother or through the church, but I believe the church wasn't built at the time of his death in 1893. Is that right? Jasper Daniel's family was on the move during the 1830s and 1840s. Depending on who's tree you follow they may have been in some or all of the following states: TN, IN, IL and KY. My grandmother (Jasper's granddaughter) had no doubt that she was 1/8 Cherokee on her father's side. By process of elimination, I have traced all her other grandparents and confirmed that only Martha could be the Cherokee. Any information about those tombstones you could share with me would be so much appreciated! Thank you very much. Diane

According to my late inlaws, that married in early 1950's in Piggott - a minor did not have to have a parent sign..........
A lot of people about that time got married in Missouri because they didn't need their parents with them when they were underage. That help besides no blood test or waiting period. Oh, I bet it was her. My grandmother told me that her uncle's property adjoined the Anna State Hospital and that Pearl and her husband did work for her uncle. How do you know this information? There were four sisters and their mother died when my grandmother, the youngest, was two or so. The sisters, all but Pearl, moved away from the area. BTW, Marianne, my grandmother whose marriage record I'm seeking had a sister Pearl who married a William Noel Dillow in 1914. Patti http://hobbits8.net
Thanks for the suggestion about Piggot, Arkansas. I will check there. As to the marriages there in the 1940's and the supposition about the war, I do have a brother of my grandfather who filed a petition in court in Howell County, Missouri asking that the three-day waiting period be waived. He stated that he was on a short leave from the army (this was in the 1940s) and didn't know that there was a three- day waiting period and he didn't have that much time. He was able to get married. But maybe others just went elsewhere. I know this isn't the particular case for my grandparents since they were married in 1932. Patti
Let's just say I have knowledge of the facility and Pearl Dillow was well known there. The house is still standing there. :) Marianne Dillow --- On Wed, 9/24/08, Patti Hobbs <genealogy@hobbits8.com> wrote: > From: Patti Hobbs <genealogy@hobbits8.com> > Subject: Re: [ILUNION] marriages > To: ilunion@rootsweb.com > Date: Wednesday, September 24, 2008, 12:05 PM > Oh, I bet it was her. There was a Pearl Dillow that was head nurse at Anna State Hospital which is now called Choate Mental Health Center. They lived in a house at the front gate of the facility. I figured the war had something to do with it in the "40"'s. My parents got married in 1942 at Jackson, Mo. and my dad was in the Army. Sorry to butt in here, but I have long wondered why so many folks from Franklin County went to Piggott, Arkansas to get married. There must have been some reason because I have seen it hundreds of times usually for marriages in the 1940s. I once thought perhaps there was a military base there. Peggy Some of my family also went from Stoddard Co. MO down to Piggott. My families in western MO always went to Harrison, Arkansas, probably for the same reason. There were no blood tests or waiting period. Harrison had some assembly line wedding parlors. They provided a preacher, music, decorations, and a witness if needed. Back in the early 1800s some of my relatives who were in Calloway Co. KY before moving to Illinois would go down to marry in Henry Co. TN where there was a "Marrying Tree" that was known far a wide as a nice place to hold your wedding. Several of my Jackson & Union Co. family members were married in Jackson, Cape Girardeau Co., MO and some in Piggott, AR. Sherry In a message dated 9/19/2008 12:26:50 P.M. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: r_a_green Surnames: Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.union/3794/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 19th CENTURY ATLAS, MAPS, HISTORICAL GUIDES & GAZETTEERS (includes publications from IA, IN, MN, OH and WI) http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/hgg.html Historians, genealogists and researchers of the 19th century Midwestern United States will find the vast amount of historical research material in these books and atlases on CD a very valuable resource. Each of these extensive gazeteer and immigrant guides contain the description of places and place names, many of which are no longer found on contemporary maps, including: cities, towns, villages, settlements, schools, post offices, transportation routes and schedules, and much more. Historical Guides and Gazetteer CD's may also include maps of the period providing cartographic reference to 19th century places identified and discussed in the literature. Also included are hundreds of advertisements by contributing businesses providing historical insight into the goods, services and the merchants that made them available during the 19th century. Anyone interested in the history of these regions will find this material useful. ------------------------------------------------------------ HISTORIC ATLAS SERIES (includes 19th century atlases of IA, IL, IN, KY, KS, MI, MN, NE, OH, PA, VA and WI) http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/has.html The Historic Atlas Series CD's are digital reproductions of 19th century maps and historical atlas data in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). The Adobe Reader software is required to view, manipulate and print PDF data is included on each CD. States with maps and atlases currently available are shown in the graphic to the right. 19th century geographic and statistical data are useful to historians, genealogists and researchers with an interest in the landscape and cultural setting of this period. Early county maps may contain many places that no longer exist or that have been obscured over time. Atlases with statistical data provide vivid detail of 19th century pioneer lifestyles. Details on early maps are often difficult to read and these are no exception; however, by virtue of the Adobe PDF formatting, these documents may be inspected and printed at high levels of magnification without additional digital distortion; something that simply cannot be accomplished with paper reproductions and photocopies. There is a vast amount of information that can be gleaned from these sources and the diligent researcher will find these cartographic resources useful in their studies. ------------------------------------------------------------ Good luck with your research!
