This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hunter Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Wh.2ADE/1807 Message Board Post: Please help! Searching for information on John Hunter (born about 1823 in TN.) and wife Rhoda (born about 1824 in TN.). This family moved from TN. to IL. between 1846 and 1850. They are shown on the 1850 Union census living with son Ellis B. (born about 1846 in TN.) and a child names James Wilson. Any information on this family would be wonderful! Birth/marriage/death dates, ancestor names, where in TN they were from, when/why they came to IL., relasionship to the Wilson child, etc. I have searched everywhere I can think of and the only other possible trace I have come across is a John Hunter on the 1880 Makanda, Jackson Co., IL. census. Again any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
I have requested that the message board to be gatewayed to the mail list. What this means is when a message is posted on the message board (Ancestry.com board) that message will be sent to the mail list. The person who made the query to the message board is probably not a subscriber to the mail list , if you reply it will be to the message board link in the email. The reply will then be sent to the mail list from the message board. This only applies to the message board emails to the list. I do not know when it will start I would say sometime next 5 days. The mail list will work as always if you are a subscriber, you need to do nothing different than you have done in the past. I wanted you all to know what I had done. I hope this will just be another tool for your research and to help others when you can. If any questions do not email the MAIL LIST email me at [email protected] Any problems or suggestions please do so. Happy researching. Tim Casey Johnson Co IL Shelby Co IL Union Co IL
I have a Sarah Ann Faris (born 24 Jul 1850 in OH) who married Ezekiel Raum Jinnette (b 18 48 in IL) in March of 1870 in Anna, IL. I dont have any death dates for either of them. I'm not sure nay of this will help, but here goes. If any of this is of interest, let me know and I can nail down some of the dates not referenced below). From the History of Union County by George E. Parks I found 5 references to BOSWELLs: Dick (After the end of WWII, "fathers took their sons into business as Dick Boswell launched his son, Stanley Junior, into his tavern business on West Vienna Street") Ed (listed as an alderman to the street superintendent in Anna, Illinois) Lester (1937 he had a small restaurant on Main Street and made 300 sandwiches in a matter of hours for some flood relief workers). Squire Thomas (says he made a speech at a Chamber of Commerce function and is from the Anna, Illinois, vicinity) Boswell Tavern (as soon as prohibition was repealed (1930's), 3 new taverns opened up in Anna. One was Boswell's Tavern on West Vienna Street Then in another book, titled History of Alexander, Union, and Pulaski Counties (1883) there are numerous references to Boswells. 21 in total. No Minerva listed. No Jinnetts listed but there is an E.R., Edna, and Sarah Jinnette listed. Also about 100 Hilemans (including John and Sarah). I am not able to look up the information for a few days. If you want to know more, just let me know and I will fill you in on details. Tim: Sarah, wife of Sylvester Hileman, was listed as age 19 in 1870. She and the two children in the household were, I suspect, born in Illinois, but the entire household is shown by ditto marks to have been born in NC. If her age there is also wrong, she could be the Sarah Ginnett listed in the 1850 Union Co IL census (page 157B), as age 2 in the household of Barnet Ginnet, age 41 NC and wife Frances. IL Statewide Marriage Index shows Barnett Jennett married Frances "Frankie" Evans in Union Co IL on 1/11/1836. Frankie was listed as 42 in 1860 (page 116/117, P.O. Anna), and Sarah as 12 b IL. There were at least two Minerva Boswells. One born 10 Jan 1848, according to Union Co guardianship records, dtr of James Boswell. She married James W. Wood(w)ard in 1865. The other was born around 1852, and appears to have been the dtr of Joseph and Mary Boswell. I don't know what Mary's maiden name was. See the query at http://genforum.genealogy.com/escue/messages/1.html . The Alfred Anderson Mary married was NOT the son of Timothy and Drucilla (Biggs) Anderson, as he is mistakenly listed in several submissions to the WorldConnect Project. I have quite a bit on the Rendleman clan. I am researching the Dilday family of Union Co. George Rendleman (b. 12/22/1831, Union Co., IL; b. 12/30/1914, McPherson, KS) married in Alto Pass, Union Co., IL on 11/30/1854 to Elizabeth Dilday (b. 4/19/1837, Memphis, Shelby Co., TN; d. 2/8/1913, Makanda, Jackson Co., IL). In the civil war pension file of Lewis M Bittle, there are several affidavits written by his friends and neighbors. The affidavits give some information about the person signing the affidavits. Examples of information included in some - their Post office location, that served with him in the Civil war and their unit, that they were a neighbor, indicating how long they knew him, their distance from his home, frequency of visits to his home, that they stayed in his home, went with him and waited on him at the civil war hospital. Some are written in their hand, others written for them and signed with their mark. I'll be glad to send digital copies of these affidavits to researchers wanting to document their ancestor's events. Below is the list of affadavits in his pension file - with the affadavit date. Thought I'd share this information about the online Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 17631900 accuracy. While this database has been a terrific aid in researching my Union County ancestors, this is yet one more reminder for me to document, document, document.... Calloway County, KY records show that John Bittle and Hanna Kits were married in Calloway County KY on 25 May 1826. When looking for Bittle marriages in the Illinois online database, I came across an entry for the marriage of John Bittle and Hannah Kitts. Surprised to see any Illinois marriage listed for them, I sent an email in hopes of finding out the source of this entry. Here is the reply I received. The statewide marriage index was the first Archives-sponsored database in which the data was entered by volunteers and managed by State Archives staff. In those early days marriages were entered from several sources, including publications listing Illinois marriages. Some of these published sources have proven to be unreliable or to contain data that was not documented. Some of the Union County marriages in our database were taken from "Marriages of Union County 1818-1880" compiled by Ernest Harding Jackson and published by Heritage House of Thomson, Illinois. In that volume Mr. Jackson indicates that several hundred marriages were included that "took place somewhere else"--meaning other than Union County. These were included because they were "important families in the county." Mr. Jackson further indicated that the source for most of these marriages was William Henry Perrin's "History of Alexander, Union and Pulaski Counties." A few marriages were based on "correspondence and census records." The Bittle-Kitts marriage, which occurred in Kentucky, is no doubt one of the marriages which Mr. Jackson found in one of his other sources. Our criteria for selecting sources for our marriage data have changed over the years, and we no longer use sources for which there is inadequate documentation. We try to avoid any marriage data that does not come from an official record which can be cited. The fact that such marriage data is in our database is regrettable, but it would be difficult and in some cases impossible to identify these records in our database. Currently, we do not have the capability of modifying data entered before a certain time. As problems appear, we are attempting to identify the weaknesses and quirks in the sources that were used to create the database. That way we can explain the problems even though we cannot currently remedy them. Your information certainly adds to our list of quirks and errors in the database. Thanks for pointing out the true source of this marriage. Sincerely, Karl Moore Illinois State Archives
I'm also researching the surname Giles during the late 1800's around Cobden and Wolf Lake areas. And thought I'd add my 2 cents about the libraries.... The Genealogical Society of Southern Illinois has it's collection located at the John A Logan College Library, Carterville, IL and is open for research during normal library hours and on meeting days. The books do not circulate so they're always available to do research with. However, unless you go there during one of the days the Society meets there, you will be on your own doing research. The John A Logan librarians are not knowledgeable of what is housed in the genealogy collection. If you want more information on GSSS, here's their link http://www.jal.cc.il.us/gssi.html If you want more information on this library, here's their link http://www.jal.cc.il.us/lrc.html Hope this helps, and if there's anybody researching GILES please let me know. Thanks, Melinda
If the database shows no marriage book volume and page number, and gives an approximate year of marriage (as appears in quotation marks below), the couple was probably married outside of Union County and the marriage info is quite likely taken from Perrin's "History of Alexander, Union & Pulaski Counties." These two couples were married in Stewart Co TN: BIGGS, DAVIS W ANDERSON, THISBE (MAR CA 1825) 00/00/0000 UNION FERRELL THOMAS ANDERSON, ELIZABETH (MAR CA 1818) 00/00/0000 UNION A marriage that took place in the county would more likely look like this: SMITH, ALBERT J GRIFFITH, MARY 08/17/1862 2/ 334 UNION It's misleading to have these non-Union County or non-Illinois marriages in the database, but one helpful thing about it is that, when you run across one, it's an indication to look in Perrin's "History" for a biography. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Williams" <[email protected]> To: <> Sent: Saturday, August 28, 2004 2:27 PM Subject: [ILUNION] Illinois State marriage database record accuracy > Thought I'd share this information about the online Illinois Statewide > Marriage Index, 1763-1900 accuracy. Hello fellow listers, I am looking for info on George W. and Mary A. (SKINNER)LYERLY,and more specifically, their children and grandchildren. They were in the Jonesboro area at least by Feb. 5,1895 for the birth of their daughter, Elvia May LYERLY. Elvia married Richard SLACK and they had at least 2 daughters. They were: 1. Norma Dixie SLACK,b.Mar. 22, 1911 2. Gladys SLACK, b.June 28,1912 There was also an A.J. LYERLY who may have been the attending physician for Mary A. (SKINNER) LYERLY at the time of her death(1918). My priority is to find out anything about Norma & Gladys SLACK,my first cousins, and their families. I also would like to prove conclusively that their Richard SLACK was the son of Richard H. SLACK, my great grandfather. Then I need to find all of my hitherto unknown LYERLY cousins! Thanks sooooooo much in advance, Carl __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Does anyone know of records regarding the men who worked on the railroad or in a lumber mill about 1860 to 1880? Was Dongola near a railroad in the 1860s to 1880s? Thanks, Carolyn Heimann
Stinson Library has family histories some may be the only histories written on some Union Co IL families. They have census records, some of Darrell Dexter's books, Stinson Library has been redoing their genealogy section. I do not know what the Jonesboro library has to offer in genealogy, Dongola library has a very small section, they have been working on a Dongola History Book . A person would be wise to see what is there at Stinson Library and the Courthouse some of what you find at Courthouse you can find at Stinson also. Courthhouse does have the Civil War books on IL regiments. The courthouse has index of records so they are easy to find. After searching Union Co IL as Linda stated earlier in her email. A person may want to go to John A. Logan College in Carterville which is not far. The Southern IL Genealogy Society has their library and family histories there. I think it is open Monday thru Sat during school. There will be many books from neighboring counties there also. Brehm Library in Mt. Vernon IL which is about 75 miles North of Anna has a very large Genealogy Library. Tim Casey Anna IL
