    1. Re: [ILUNION] Anna State Mental Hospital
    2. My mother was DON at Choate for a number of years. She also was there as a nursing student in the 50's. The only fire she remembers was in the same building as the records in the 70's when Dr. Steck caught his apartment on fire smoking in bed. The cemetery is intact but there are no, nor have there ever been headstones. The restrictions in release of information are due to HIPPA, the incredibly annoying piece of paper everybody has to sign every three minutes for healthcare these days. It is difficult at best to get that information. A death certificate would have been issued and be on file at the courthouse in Jonesboro. Even deaths at Anna State had those issued. If you have trouble getting a death certificate then some of your information could be incorrect. CStrahm

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Wh.2ADE/1863 Message Board Post: We are planning a cleanup of Hazelwood Cemetery between Elco and Ullin on Tuesday, May 31, 2005. Volunteers are needed, as of right now, we only have about a half a dozen or so to work on this project. Please email me direct at [email protected] if you can help or need directions to get there. This cemetery has graves dating back into the 1800's and there are veterans buried there, it has been neglected for many years, but with some TLC and hard work, we can give the people buried there the dignity they deserve. Please consider coming out and helping. Linda Cecil Cox

I have also tried the historical society and at Choate with regard to the fire and cemetery destruction. Choate will tell me nothing. It seems no one in Anna seems to know about the destruction to the cemetery. Choate has informed me that they have to have a court order but the records were destroyed and their are only some index cards which provides very sparse information. Like Name, dob, dod, admission date, discharge date, and a vague diagnoses. I live in Florida so except for one trip to Anna last year I have had to do most of this through mail and telephone. Is there anyone who can tell me about the fire that destroyed the records or the destruction to the cemetery
