Tammy -- Chester township was definitely formed in 1880. My ancestors bought land there in 1822. The 1880 Logan census has Jacob J. Keif, 26, wife Margaret, 20, children Michel, 2, and Minnie, 9 months, in Broadwell Township [next township west of Chester]. Both were born in Baden. I think the one you want is Martin Keif, 43, born Baden, wife Elizabeth, 31, born HeDar [?], children Rudolph, 10, Maggie, 9, Katherine, 7, Bals, 5, William, 2. All children born in Illinois.
