    1. Re: [ILTAZEWE] KEEFER
    2. Greetings: I'm a distant cousin of Susan Carlson and also am interested in Keefer related info. Susan and I don't follow the same lines, but we both start with Daniel Keefer from PA who had two sons move to Tazewell Co. around 1839. Those two were Jacob and William. Susan descends from Jacob (1799-1870) and I descend from William (1801-1853). We also have another cousin that descends from both. William's children with his first wife were Henry, Eudica (Utica), Antis (or Antoine), and Maria. His children with Mary Staner were John B., Alicia, Caroline, Mary Jane, Magaret, Jeremiah, William and Louisa. Mary Staner died in 1901 in Pekin. I descend from John B. Keefer. He married Mary Catherine Maloney in Logan Co, lived in Tazewell, and later on moved to DeWitt Co but I don't have dates for most of that. Any info on Keefers or relatives would be greatly appreciated. If you want more info, please let me know. We have gathered quite a bit of info and I just located another cousin in Canada just this week. Many thanks -- Bob Espinosa >Dear list: >I am newly subscribed to this list and just now have rejoined the >Tazewell Co. Genealogical & Historical Soc. after an absence of several >years. 1. [ILTAZEWE] Surnames KEEFER & PHILLIPS--possible lookup in 2000 Tazewell Gene. Monthly?
    2. T and S Carlson
    3. Dear list: I am newly subscribed to this list and just now have rejoined the Tazewell Co. Genealogical & Historical Soc. after an absence of several years. I am searching for information on my Keefer and Phillips ancestors from Tazewell Co. and found reference to both names in the 2000 surname index for the Tazewell Gene. Monthly. I am especially trying to find anything about my great great grandfather, William Phillips. He was residing in Pekin at the time of the 1860 census, house 216--aged 49, occupation farmer--along with Anna (wife? aged 27) and daughters Ester, age 17 and Amanda, aged 15; both daughters born in Ohio. William's older daughter, Louise, was my great grandmother; she was also in the area, having married Dr. Francis Richard (Frank) Keefer in Sept 1855. Frank Keefer was son of Jacob Keefer of Dillon Twp (I was previously lucky enough to find Jacob's grave in Old Sand Prairie/Wehyrich Cemetery). I am trying to find out if William Phillips died in Tazewell Co., married Anna (a second wife?) there, if he was related to the other Phillips family residing there at the time, etc. 2000 references in the 2000 Tazewell Gene. Monthly were as follows-- KEEFER: p.99, p.148. PHILLIPS: p.14, 15 or 16, 24, 80, 124, 136, 142, 148, 170. I am especially interested in what p.148 may have to say, as both names are mentioned. I'd be eternally grateful if someone who owns the 2000 issues could check those pages for me. Or, if anyone else has info about these families, I would love to hear from you. Thanks in advance for any help. Sincerely, Susan Carlson

    1. [ILTAZEWE] Methodist Ministers
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. Is there a Methodist minister in your family tree? You may be interested in this new CD. Conference Journals Memoirs: An index to memoirs printed in conference journals held by the G.C.A.H. A new searchable database covering the memoirs of ministers in the Methodist Episcopal Church, Methodist Protestant Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, the Evangelical Association/Church, the United Brethren in Christ and the United Evangelical Church is now available in CD format from the General Commission on Archives and History. This database was designed as an index to a resource, not as a resource itself. It does not contain complete biographical information, or a complete pastoral record. This database is an index to the memoirs printed in the various annual conference journals held by the General Commission on Archives and History of The United Methodist Church. Not only are there memoirs of pastors in these journals, but often their spouses and in some cases lay leaders of the annual conference. The database only contains information up to the 1939 conference journals of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Methodist Protestant Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and prior to 1946 for the Evangelical Church, The United Brethren in Christ and the United Evangelical Church. There are approximately 61,000 name entries. The database gives you the information to determine in what journal, year, and page the memoir appears. You will still need to locate the journal in order to get at the information. You can do this by either contacting the Commission or the appropriate annual conference archives. The CD comes with its own search engine. It requires a Pentium level PC with at least a 4x CD drive. It runs only on Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT. There is no version for the Mac. The CD can be ordered from the General Commission on Archives and History for $10, including postage. You can order it from the Commission: E-mail: research@gcah.org; Phone: 973-408-3189; Mail: GCAH, P.O. Box 127, Madison, NJ 07940

    1. [ILTAZEWE] Civil War
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. I received a question about the state's Civil War records and I thought this was a good time to remind everyone about them. The Secretary of State web site for online databases: http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/databases.html is the URL for all the databases. While you are there read the whole page and see if there are any other databases which are useful to you. It is a growing list. Regarding the Civil War database, you can search by name and get the unit, etc. You can get a copy of the record [such as it is] for free. The record is merely an entry in a ledger and they copy the page it is on. They don't get the whole page but a major portion. For example, I asked for Benjamin Harding. The page starts with a readable Alexander Douglas. Ben is about 25 down the page and that far down it is getting harder and harder to read. It gives the rank, age, description [height, hair, eyes, complexion, marital status], occupation, nativity [town, county, state], joined [date, location, by whom, period signed up for], mustered in [date, location, by whom], residence [town, county, state]. It appears there is a column for last pay but it is blank on all the examples I have. This record is different from the records for the same person that the National Archives has -- I like it because it gives a physical description. I happen to have pictures but not everyone does. A couple notes -- names may not be spelled correctly, particularly given names. The residence may not be what you expect. The residence they gave might be Salt Creek or a town that no longer exists rather than a town you know. Unless your ancestor was John Smith I suggest you search on the name only. Each database now comes with more detailed search instructions. It would be a good idea to read them if you haven't searched recently. Cheryl Rothwell LoganCty@mindspring.com

    2. Hi Kim I have been to Minier a couple of times in the past doing research and was really pleased with a young lady who was working in your library, this was a few years back. I have two ancestor lines there in Minier and they are: Stephen O. DAVISON who died in Minier on 5 Dec 1895. I found his obit in the Minier paper that the library had in large binders in a corner. The papers were original and were very brittle then. Anyway Stephen's wife was an Emma ALLEN DAVISON who was very sick when Stephen died. Stephen's son, George W. DAVISON married an Alice M. JOHNSON on 2 July 1882 in Minier. Alice was the daughter of a Joseph JOHNSON and Sarah WOOLLEY. I haven't found out it Joseph died in Minier or not but Sarah later remarried. My folks were raised in Delavan which is not to far from where you are at. I was primarily raised in Washington. Love hearing from those up there and yes I do miss that part of the country.
