    3. The North had a much larger pool of men to draw from. There was really no need for 15, 16, 17 year olds to serve. Some may have lied about their age and enlisted of course. In Illinois [and, as it was required by the War Department, I assume all other northern states] they took a military census in 1862 to determine who was available to serve. Those records still exist and may be used for genealogy research. They are on microfilm at the state archives. I don't know how they took it because the resulting report lists the men in alphabetical order by community [often communities that no longer exist]. It lists name, age, nativity, occupation, remarks. Dorothy Falk told me about this valuable resource last winter. 3. I found this on another list. Check your ancestors and see if you think it is true. In checking my ancestors it is not true. Is it is true or not true for your ancestors? From: http://www.genealogybulletin.com/archives/HTML/etc70.html According to a tidbit from genealogical society bulletins, 78 percent of the Union Army in the Civil War was comprised of lads 15 to 18 years old. Data gleaned from government records reveals figures that may surprise you. Here are the statistics from the total enlistment of Northern soldiers during the Civil War: Age Number of Personnel 10 ............ 25 11 ............ 34 12 ............225 13 ............380 14 ...........1602 15 ........104,987 (3.5%) 16 ........231,051 (8.0%) 17 ........884,981 (28.0%) 18 ......1,158,434 (38.5%) 19-22 .....617,511 (20.5%) 22-44 ......52,696 45+ .....Not given Cheryl Rothwell LoganCty@mindspring.com http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Central Illinois Regional Coordinator, ILGenWeb

    1. [ILTAZEWE] Scully INF.
    2. Mark & Denise Day
    3. This is from History of Logan Co. (in my own words) William Scully, an Irish landlord of London England, came to the US to invest in land. He was a smart guy who road his horse over the states from Philadelphia + looking for just the right "soil." Here in Central Illinois he felt he'd found what he was looking for, some of the most beautiful dirt to be had in the world.( I agree ) Scully purchased land on a straight line between the cities of St. Louis and Chicago,,, since he knew there'd be a railroad going through and the land would be even more valuable. He bought the land for $ 1.25 an acre. In 1853 Scully built a home in Logan Co. bringing several Irish families to help him work the land. THe Irish didn't stay long and his wife sickened and died. He sold some of his land, but the Civil War began and land sales ceased. With the return of Civil War soldiers, Scully had his renters. In 1870 he began work on a drainage system that worked quite well. Some criticized Scully for his introduction of the Irish tenantry system and many felt that a person who had not taken American citizenship shouldn't own so much American soil. My Great Uncle worked Scully land and in a few years was able to save enough to buy his own farm, many others did too. Scully leased the land, not the improvements on the land. If the renters left, Scully would not reimburse them for their fences, houses, barns ect. the new tenants would.( in most cases.) Taxes were also paid by the renter.

    3. Scully Estates used to have an office in downtown Lincoln, Illinois. They were on the second floor of a bank. My cousin's father-in-law used to manage the office back in the 1980's. I ran a search on Yahoo a few minutes ago and found Scully Estates, 303 S. Kickapoo, Lincoln, IL. Phone (217) 735-1541. That Kickapoo address is also the location of Union Planters Bank. 3. German laborers who built the system of drainage tiles and sloughs on the more than 30,000 acres in Logan County were given leases on the land. Scully wasn't poor -- lots of people think he was since he came from Ireland in 1850. He bought a lot of the land from the Government Land Office. I would guess a search of BLM or the state's land purchase database would turn up a good portion of the Scully purchases. The Scullys were educated in agriculture. In 1926 they embraced the Illinois System of Permanent Soil Fertility, ie, crop rotation. They promoted soil conservation, soil testing, grassed waterways, etc. In Logan County they also gave some land to the county for parks and trails. If anyone has seen the book Tom listed I'd be interested in hearing about it. 2. Hazel, From a memo dated 15 Feb 2000 in my files I have reference to a book: "Landlord William Scully" by Homer E. Socolofsky, Lawrence, KS, The Regents Press of Kansas, 1979 I have not read the book but have been interested in the Scully estates as some of my somewhat distant kinfolk have farmed said land for generations. I seem to recall from years ago my Dad relating that the land was purchased by the Scully Estate for a pound or so of tobacco per acre and then leased out (maybe for 100 years)? with the buildings belonging to the farmers, the land remaining in the estate. Rules were made as to crops rotated and the like. Lands in the estates were in Logan County, IL, Nuckolls County, NB, Marions County, KA, Gage County, NB. Hope this helps, Tom Dirksen

    3. VAST amounts of land. I believe there is a book on the Scully land. I can't find a reference to it at the moment of course. The family still owns it -- 4 and 5 generations after. I believe the land is entailed. I don't know a great deal about the family. William's eldest son was Thomas who married Violet Mary ?. They had Michael John and Peter D. I believe William had other children. 3. I belong to the Ostfriesen Mailing list and we have had numerous discussions on the Scully leases since that is how many of our ancestors came to America. You can go directly to some of the Scully archives by going to http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/isearch2 . Just look at the message bodies. The home page of this group is at http://www.summitsoftware.com/Ostfriesen and on it you will learn a great deal about Ostfriesen history as well as directions for joining this friendly group. If you have questions please just ask and I'll do my best to answer you although I'm not the ultimate authority on the subject. I can remember seeing Scully farms when I was a child with all the buildings painted a sort of mustard yellow. Dottie

    3. I would be very interested in any information on this family. I have other roots from Tazewell from the opposite side of my family research. Robert Barnard married Rachel Chaffer and they lived in Tazewell. Rachel's father was Abraham Chaffer who owned a lot of farming land in the Deer Creek area. I was very surprised to learn of the Scully's also being in Tazewell when I started researching that branch of the family. Small world! 3. Thanks Mike for that info. My major problem is that I live in western Canada and I just don't have access to the majority of sources. My Sarah J. Hancock, was born in Piatt Co., married there, and lived there with her husband Albert N. Collins for almost a year, until after my grandmother was born. They then moved back to his home in Pekin, IL. She had a son Robert, that my grandmother called Bert, and from other sources, I have been told there was a 3rd child that did not survive. This child had to have been born abt 1881-1886 when Sarah died - I suspect in child birth. She was buried with her family in the Harshbarger Cemetery in Piatt Co. The page from that Cemetery book, gives her date of death but NOT where she died. Anyone with other suggestions please, reply. All of your information is very appreciated.
