    2. Dorothy Nanninga Sewell
    3. A movement has been started like that from Desert Storm. During Desert Storm we tied yellow ribbons anywhere we could. Well, now the movement is to tie purple ribbons the same way. This is for two reasons: 1. In remembrance of not only the firefighters, police officers, and paramedics who have died, but also for all who have died in this terrible tragedy. 2. Just as in the military, when a serviceman gets injured, he is given the Purple Heart. Well, our country has been injured to its core. Please pass this on to everyone you know, and let's see purple ribbons everywhere!!

    1. [ILTAZEWE] NGS Books to St. Louis
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2001 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - NGS Library's Books To Be Relocated Good news for genealogists outside of the Washington, D.C. area: The U.S. National Genealogical Society is moving its library books to the St. Louis County (Missouri) Library. This is a rather drastic move but one that will dramatically increase the availability of the books. In the past, the National Genealogical Society's books were available by in-person visit or by mail to NGS members. The St. Louis County Library will do the same but also will make the books available by Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Interlibrary Loan charges are generally lower than the NGS' circulating library charges. Also, one doesn't need to be an NGS member in order to obtain books via Interlibrary Loan. The end result will be that many more genealogists will have access to these books than ever before. The change was the result of a near unanimous vote by the NGS Council (one member dissenting) that was announced at the Federation of Genealogical Society meeting in Iowa. A few items will not be transferred to the St. Louis County Library, including: * Bible Collection * American Medical Association's Deceased Doctors Card File * Member Ancestor Charts (now being indexed by volunteers) * Germans to America collection * Hall of Fame material * Rare books (old or brittle, limited editions, books with high used-book market value that did not circulate) * Manuscript and Reference Collections On November 5, 2001, most of the 17,000+ volumes of the library that formerly circulated to walk-in patrons and Library Loan users will be shipped to the St. Louis County Library and housed there permanently, to be available to the general public. The NGS book collection was donated, not sold, to St. Louis Public Library under provisions of a mutual agreement. The agreement with the St. Louis County Library provides that they will make the books acquired from NGS available to the general public through Interlibrary Loan. This means that the cost of ordering and delivering the books to patrons may be lower than NGS' past library loan charges to members, but patrons' use of the books will be subject to the receiving libraries' policies regarding patron use of Interlibrary Loan materials. The agreement also provides that NGS has 10 years in which to repatriate its collection from St. Louis County Library if NGS pays for handling and shipment. There have been some negative remarks about the move on the various message boards in the past few days, which is surprising to me. Certainly the moving of the books is a drawback to those living within easy driving distance to Arlington, Virginia. Those people will no longer be able to drive to the NGS Library to use the books. On the other hand, those in the St. Louis area will now be within driving distance of these resources. What's more, with the new lending terms, genealogists in all other parts of the country will experience significantly improved ease of access to these books. Unlike the NGS, the St. Louis County Library has its card catalog online. You can search for available books at: http://www.slcl.lib.mo.us. You can search by title, author, subject, keyword or call number. The NGS probably would not have created that capability for several more years. Unlike the NGS, the St. Louis County Library allows everyone to order Interlibrary Loan of books online. Simply go to http://www.slcl.lib.mo.us/ill/ill_book.htm to fill out your request. (Remember that the NGS books have not been moved yet. Don't try to order those volumes until early next year.) The St. Louis County Library also provides online information about books you have ordered and which ones you presently have checked out. The St. Louis County Library also has more services for those who are physically handicapped or housebound than the NGS did. For local users, the St. Louis County Library will be able to notify you via regular mail or by e-mail when materials are available for pick up. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [ILTAZEWE] living in Woodford, marrying in Tazewell?
    2. Amy Robbins-Tjaden
    3. Lyde added yet another hmmmmmm to this business of my ancestors living in one county and having that marriage recorded in another. Was that common back then? Or now? I'm unfamiliar with American marriage laws so don't know if this is something that's fairly usual or if it's something I need to continue to scratch my head over. Most of my ancestors were kind enough (as far as my eventual researching needs are concerned) to emigrate to Woodford Co but a smattering were in Tazewell and McLean counties, at least for a time. Should I start looking for previously unfound documentation for them in more than just the county where I think it should be? My thanks to all who responded to my query, especially Lyde (who checked a source for me) and Leslie (who sent the URL for what looks like a great website). And Dottie, it's starting to look like either I'm your grandmother or you're mine. <G> Amy Robbins-Tjaden atjaden@mindspring.com amy@tjaden.com

    3. Sharon, your names look as though they are Ostfriesen to me. There is an Ostfriesen mailing list on Rootsweb with the home page address of http://www.summitsoftware.com/Ostfriesen that you might want to check out. It's full of friendly, helpful people. You might also try listing your names on my web site as many people have connected to long lost cousins there. There is also a web site called Headstone Hunters but I can't seem to find the address for it right now. People volunteer to take pictures in cemeteries that they choose. It's a good idea. Good luck. 3. Dear Amy Robbins-Tjaden: The Tazewell County Genealogical & Historical Society has a wonderful roots.web website that will give you all the data you need to get the marriage record you seek. Their website will also give you links to all kinds of other Tazewell County and Illinois information. An especially nice service, the TCGHS will conduct some research for you for a small fee. The website for TCGHS is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iltcghs/ Best of luck! I am just starting my own research in Tazewell County. My ancestor is Timothy Crosby III who came to Tazewell in 1836 (b. 23 Oct 1799 in Waterville, Sangerfield Township, Oneida Co., NY; m. Mary Kinney in 1822), married (2) Rebecca (Davis) Ward in 1837 and (3) Lucy Marvis in 1857. Timothy and Mary had 6 children; Timothy and Rebecca had 5 children. Timothy's 2nd child, Delos Crosby is my ancestor (b. Mar 1823; m. 27 Feb 1844 in Tazewell, Cynthia Ann Brady (b. 24 Jun 1828 in Virginia, daughter of William and Mary (McClintock) Brady)). Delos and Cynthia had 9 children. Delos Crosby moved to Viola in Mercer Co., IL ca. 1854; moved to Sedgwick Co., KS in 1874; moved to Grant Co., OK ca. 1897. I have more information about this family line if anyone is also researching any ties to this family. Would love to correspond with you! Regards, Leslie Crosby Carignan LCrosby@ix.netcom.com

I checked Volume IV of Tazewell County Marriges, published by the Tazewell County Genealogical Society. It appears this couple really was married in Woodford County; but for some reason it was recorded in Tazewell County. See what you think: WARICKER, M. H(?) - residing in Clayton Twp, Woodford County married 4 Nov 1880 to Ida G. FLOHR of Lynn Twp, Woodford County at my residence at Lynn Twp-D.M. FISTER Minister of the Gospel - Lutheran Church. Recorded in Book 59. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Strangely, all the other entries in the book show names of parents of both parties and where the bride and groom were born as well as names of witnesses. None of that information is here for this couple. You can get a copy of the original marrige record from Tazewell County Clerk at Pekin, Illinois. Lyde

    2. Amy Robbins-Tjaden
    3. I just learned that my ancestor, Ida Gerdes FLOHR, married Menne Andreas WARNKES in Nov of 1880 in Tazewell Co and not in Woodford Co as the family history had it (undocumented, of course). In the summer of that year, she was listed as a servant in the house of someone who lived in Linn Twp, Woodford Co and he was listed as living with his parents in Clayton Twp, Woodford Co. Was there more than meets the eye to their getting married in Tazewell Co instead of Woodford Co or was it just closer and/or easier or something boring like that? I don't know and probably never will. But I would like to get a copy of their marriage record and am wondering how easy or difficult a task that might be. Can someone point me in the right direction for where I can send off for a copy of that record? Thanks, Amy Robbins-Tjaden atjaden@mindspring.com amy@tjaden.com
