    1. RE: [ILTAZEWE] Civil War Pension Question
    2. Charlotte Sawyer
    3. Generally the end of a Civil War pension did mean the death of the veteran. Since he lived so long after the Civil War, it isn't likely you'd find any Widow's Pension papers, but it might be worth trying -- if he was married. I don't Bellevue he needed to be married to that wife at the time of the Civil War for her to be eligible for pension benefits. > -----Original Message----- > From: larbear@kdsi.net [mailto:larbear@kdsi.net] > Sent: Wednesday, January 02, 2002 7:41 AM > To: ILTAZEWE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ILTAZEWE] Civil War Pension Question > > > List Members: > > I've just received Pension Papers for my Anderson Jennings who served in > the Civil War. 2. List Members: I've just received Pension Papers for my Anderson Jennings who served in the Civil War. A paper from the Office of the Disbursing Clerk dated Febr 5, 1914 shows he was last paid $12. to 4 Nov, 1910 and then was dropped from the roll because of "Section 4719, B.S." 1. [ILTAZEWE] Bureau of Land Management Site Down
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. Here's Dick Eastman's explanation of the problem with the Bureau of Land Management site. Remember, Illinois Land Records, which sometimes differ from BLM records, are available on the State Archives site at: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/data_lan.html - Bureau of Land Management Computers Knocked Offline By Judge Because of a lawsuit, Cobell v. Norton, genealogists are being denied access to the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management Web site. This site contains (or did contain) hundreds of thousands of records related to homestead claims and land sales. The site has been very popular amongst genealogists looking for records of ancestors in the western states. The site is offline today with no planned date for its return. It seems that U.S. District Judge Royce has threatened yet again to hold Secretary of Interior Gale Norton in contempt as he ordered her department to "immediately" disconnect from the Internet every single computer, server, and system that has access to individual Indian trust data. The problems and lawsuit arose from the government's extremely long delays in paying for oil royalties and grazing leases. The records were housed in a computer infrastructure that was so weak that a court-appointed investigator and his team of security experts were able to break in and repeatedly access, modify and even create data -- all without raising a response from the government. Judge Royce ordered Secretary Norton to "immediately" disconnect from the Internet every single computer, server, and system that has access to individual Indian trust data. The Secretary of Interior did just that. If you try to access the Bureau of Land Management sites, you simply get an error message saying, "Not available."

    1. [ILTAZEWE] ISNU-1903 Illinois State Normal University-full index of the book online.
    2. Jasmine
    3. I know I am not suppose to advertise anything, and I'M NOT. Someone might want to contact the person on the site to see if they can copy this full name index for their webpage, so others can view it in the future.I hate to see good info go to waste, and once the auctions are over you can't view them anymore, from what I remember. This is not my book and advertising the book is not my purpose, if anyone is interested in it fine, please don't let this valuable name index go to waste. I have written several times to people that post indexes for permission to post on webpages, they always allowed it, then I sent them to my county administrator and she posted them on the county page. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1400157142 Hope it helps someone Jas. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [ILTAZEWE] List Archives
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. Rootsweb says the mailing lists threaded archives are finally working again. They've been up and down all year. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ I don't know how much use that is since it still requires you to know the month of posting. The other option is the mailing list archives where you can search by year BUT you'll only get a listing of messages posted. Then you click on that and see one message, not the whole conversation. http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl I figure by 2005 they'll have it so you can do something useful like search for a subject and get the whole thread. 1. RE: [ILTAZEWE] BLM Site Down
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. There is a court order shutting down the databases. I looked it up to verify before I posted but I didn't read the fine print. If one of my Rootsweb sites had to be taken down my email address would work because it is not at Rootsweb. I do not know if the email addresses associated with the domain name I own would work, whether they would pull the pages or the entire account from the server. My guess would be when the judge said pull it now they shut down the entire BLM account on the server, now have to do their email differently. >>As for the accuracy of the BLM data vis-a-vis that from the State of Illinois, I believe the two are distinct databases, not that one is a better copy of the other. At least in my own limited research, I've found different transactions in one database that were not present in the other. The database that is available from the Sec of State has been available online for many years. It was on a U of I server before -- it's old. I was told the state's database was from the same records as the BLM. Certainly if you ask for this section of land from the state and from the BLM you are talking about the exact same thing, original land purchases from the government. However, I have also noticed they don't always match. Cheryl Rothwell LoganCty@mindspring.com http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/ Central Illinois Regional Coordinator, ILGenWeb

    1. RE: [ILTAZEWE] BLM Site Down
    2. Stan Wrobel
    3. Cheryl, thanks for the heads up on this issue. I called the BLM today (it is currently impossible to send them an e-mail) and spoke to a very nice guy named Ken Greenberg. He was very apologetic about the situation and said it may be weeks before the BLM's systems are up as apparently all (or most) of Interior's computer systems are interconnected (including their internal timetracking and email systems!). This is either appallingly bad computer system design or a case of Interior's programmers either trying to make a point or deciding to take some time off for the holidays. Don't expect the database to back online until well into January. As for the accuracy of the BLM data vis-a-vis that from the State of Illinois, I believe the two are distinct databases, not that one is a better copy of the other. At least in my own limited research, I've found different transactions in one database that were not present in the other. -----Original Message----- From: Cheryl Rothwell [mailto:LoganCty@mindspring.com] Sent: Friday, December 14, 2001 8:41 AM To: ILTAZEWE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ILTAZEWE] BLM Site Down Folks, this IS true. 1. [ILTAZEWE] Virus
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. There is yet another virus, worse than last week's. I repeat, a virus can NOT go through the lists for a variety of reasons. You might get it from someone you know on the list but NOT from the list. We do not get into a discussion on viruses, how to cure them, the latest rumor, etc. on the lists. However, there is information on the following sites which may help if you are not aware of things that need to done in order to prevent a virus from infecting your PC and then all of the rest of our PC's. The "RULE" IS - if you don't have a virus checker on your PC to check email you should get one immediately. Check out these sites for a free Anti-Virus software if you do not have a commercial program installed on your personal PC. A free program is available from any of the following sites: http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.html http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/download/ http://download.mcafee.com/eval/evaluate2.asp (Click on Virus Scan) http://security2.norton.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=us&venid=sym&plfid=22&pk j=YGTBBXUQIZQVMUYTACD (Click on Norton Anti Virus Information - TRY) You may have to remember to update it these programs yourself but these seem to work quite well and do not cause other problems with email. Commercial programs often can be set to update themselves at specified intervals such as daily or weekly. However you get your program updated you MUST do it regularly, at least once a week and maybe more often in these times. At the following web site you can have your computer checked for viruses while you wait: http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp http://security2.norton.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=us&venid=sym&plfid=22&pk j=YGTBBXUQIZQVMUYTACD (Click on Scan for Virus) There are many other web sites and sources of information out there. 2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. If you have an immigrant ancestor living and in the 1920 census it may be a treasure trove for you. The 1920 census asks for the year of naturalization for all naturalized citizens, the birthplace of each parent [as do all censuses beginning in 1880] and, of course, the person's birthplace. It asks the person's native language, the language of the parents and whether the person now speaks English. It also asks the immigration year and the number of years in the US. It asks if you own or rent and if you own is the mortgage paid. And this is in addition to the regular census questions.
