The Stephenson County Genealogical Society has purchased a microfilm copy of the birth, marriage, and death records prior to 1916 from the Stephenson County Clerk. The Society will copy a certificate at $1 per page donation. Make your requests for an index search and the certificates to Stephenson County Genealogical Society, PO Box 514, Freeport, IL 61032-0514. Include a Stamped self addressed envelope. The marriages are available also 1916-1924 but those ae not indexed. These details were only completed October 7, 1999. Remember these are uncertified copies. Requests for certified copies will need to be made to the County Clerk. The microfilm cost the society over $700. Of the $1 per page, 20 cents must be paid to the Library for the copy and paper. <<< Julie Wirgau <julweed@goodnet.com> 10/11 3:55p >>> Thanks, Rita!!!!!!! :) Julie >I saw an ad in the Journal Standard some months back about a book being >published (I'm assuming by the Journal Standard) called "People and Places of >Stephenson County...100 Years of History". Birth, marriage, and death are records are protected by the county clerk of each county. The previous Stephenson County clerk had no desire to open his records, and in fact he charged the maximum fees per copy as allowed by law. The new county clerk is much more cooperative. The last I heard (from a member of the Stephenson County Genealogical Society) was that the new clerk was going to allow copies of the microfilm for older birth, marriage, and death records to be made available in the local history room of the Freeport Public Library. I heard this back in April or May. The person who told me this is very reliable, and she is a very active member of the society. As I recall, she thought the records would be available in a matter of months. I am sure we are all hoping this is true. I haven't been to the library since this spring, but the next time I get into Freeport, I'll check to see if anything has happened regarding these records. The only reason records have not been available is because of the former county clerk. Right or wrong, his objective was to earn as much money for his office as possible. If the records are available at the local library, the county makes no money from them. If it is correct that these records will be available on microfilm at the Freeport Library, you will have to be patient. It takes time to produce copies of all that microfilm. Rita, I think that is a different book. The one at the BN site was published in 1994. Sam Brown
I saw an ad in the Journal Standard some months back about a book being published (I'm assuming by the Journal Standard) called "People and Places of Stephenson County...100 Years of History". This could be pre-ordered by filling out the order blank and sending a check for $29.95 per book. It says, "If you don't reserve a copy, the price will be $39.95 in November when the books are available." Could this possibly be the book you were talking about at Barnes & Noble for $89???!!! I have been reading all of the interest in the marriage records. I seem to remember about a year ago that the county was looking for something to do with their records. We talked then about putting the information on line but when I called about this the people in charge of the records I was told that I couldn't have access to them as they were and still are private. Does anyone else remember anything about this? and are these the same records? Lori
Bonnie, Go to: www.bn.com and put illinois county history in the quick search area. Sam Brown Benbrook, TX

I would also be willing to scan / transcribe some of the marriage records. Sam Brown Benbrook, TX
Greetings, Has anyone seem this book? History of Stephenson County, Illinois Book Company Higginson (Editor) / Library Binding / Date Published: July1994 Price: $79.50 I found it for sale on the Barnes and Noble site. I don't remember hearing anything about it. The latest history that I was aware of was the 1970 one. The also had histories of several of the surrounding counties. Sam Brown Benbrook, TX
Thanks for putting the URL for the ILL marriage lists on this list....I found many of my ancesters listed here. What a beauiful site and allot of hard work put into it. Thanks to who ever did all this work.... Donna
According to the IRAD brochure I have it says: "IRAD is a resource sharing system that works with the Local Records Commission and area officials to transfer valuable records to seven IRAD centers at Illinois state universities" The IRAD location at No. Illinois University at DeKalb is supposed to have records for Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Carroll, Ogle, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, Bureau, LaSalle, Will, and Kendall counties. Although I'm on the East coast, I know that there are indexes to the marriages typed up.... I've got software that would convert scanned images to "word processor" ready text. I'd be happy to work on some scanning, but can't readily drive to the courthouse <g>. Any thoughts?? Julie R
Hello, I agree, I don't believe we can cast blame on this. I haven't had the time to go check out the site fully, but I did hear that it is an ongoing processes. I might make the suggestion that if anyone would like to see marriage databases and other information, such as the census on line, that you volunteer to type some records up and submit them to either the county website or donate them to the USGenWeb Project's Archives. It doesn't appear that IRAD is holding or has ever held the marriage records for Stephenson County. A list of the Stephenson County records held at IRAD can be found at - http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/iradsrch.html Just type in Stephenson for a list of the 7 types of records that they hold. We genealogists are a unique kind of people who want to dig for facts and get the truth out. It seems that we have forgotten to do that very thing concerning these records when we start pointing fingers without digging deeper into the problem. The people at the Stephenson County Genealogical Society have been wonderful when I dealt with them. Is the Genealogical Society responsible for transmitting official records to the state agency or is it the job of someone else, like the County Clerk who records official document in the first place? In any case, this is a good time for all of us to do something beneficial. If we all helped, this could be rewarding. I'm ready for details on how I can help. Can someone local check this out and give us a plan? Mike Mellentine Chandler, Arizona
