Here is information on obtaining newspaper microfilm which has been an excellent resource for me. Roger Cramer born in Ogle Co. now living in Peoria, AZ Illinois Newspapers "Newspapers in the Illinois State Historical Library", 1998, is a listing of newspapers which the Illinois State Historical Library has on microfilm. This publication lists the microfilmed holdings by town/city/village and thereunder by newspaper title. The Illinois State Historical Library's collection now contains more than 5,000 titles, contained on 77, 000 rolls of microfilm. Over 375 current titles are received by the Library. The Illinois Newspaper Project has completed cataloging of the Historical Library's collection on the OCLC database. For each newspaper title, the publication lists the dates for which the Historical Library has extant copies of newspapers; which newspapers merged and when they merged. Also included in the publication is a listing, by county, of the towns/cities/villages represented. In addition, there is a listing of "Missing Issues" for each title which is very helpful. Many local historical societies and libraries throughout Illinois have microfilm copies of the newspapers for their area of the state. Further, all titles in this publication have been microfilmed, and are available on interlibrary loan to libraries in the United States which have microfilm viewing facilities. Libraries wishing to borrow film should contact: Illinois State Historical Library Newspaper Microfilm Section Old State Capitol Springfield, Illinois 62701-1507 217 785-7941 Interlibrary Loan Policy Microfilm 1. Most of the microfilm held by the Historical Library is available on interlibrary loan to any library in the United States with microfilm reading facilities. 2. Each request must be made by the borrowing library on OCLC or on an ALA-approved interlibrary loan request form. The Library will not accept letters or telephone calls as authorization for interlibrary loan. Requests for newspapers on microfilm should give city, title, and dates. Reels numbers are not used. 3. The Library will lend a maximum of five microfilm reels per patron. 4. If the requested microfilm is in use, the request will be held and the reels will be sent when available. 5. The loan period is one month from the date sent, but may be renewed for two weeks if no other request has been made for the film. 6. Microfilm borrowed through Illinois library systems will be sent by the Illinois State Delivery System. There is no charge. All other microfilm is mailed library rate and is insured. If film is lost at the borrowing library, that institution is responsible for repacing the film. The reels should be insured for the same amount when returned. If not, the borrowing library is responsible for replacing any reels that are lost or damaged in the mail. 7. The borrowing library must reimburse the ILLINOIS STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY for all fees incurred in sending the microfilm, including postage and insurance. These fees are indicated on the form sent with the microfilm. Postage may be paid in any form- cash, check, or stamps. 8. Microfilm must be returned in the original identified (title and dates) microfilm box, and mailed in a shipping box. MICROFILM MUST NOT BE RETURNED IN JIFFY BAGS. A copy of the interlibrary loan request form should be included in the package when returned. 9. The borrowing library must agree to restrict usage to library facilities. PATRONS MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE FILM HOME, OR TO ANOTHER OFFICE. 10. The Illinois State Historical Library and the Illinois State Library are entirely separate libraries in different buildings. When ordering and returning microfilm, please be sure that you have the correct library. 11. Libraries that fail to comply with these conditions will not be permitted to borrow material from the Historical Library.

Hi, I am the Pearl City Public Library librarian, and have the cemetery listing for Yellow Creek Cemetery for William Shirk, b. Sept. 15, 1822, d. 1884?, and Susan Shirk, b. Mar. 2, 1835, d. Jun. 27, 1913. We have a limited index of the old Pearl City News, which lists the apparent obit. of Susan, and mention of a house fire in 1914, apparently their old home. I have the paper on microfilm, and could search for and print out the obit, if you want to get back with me and make arrangements. Hi, My 2nd great aunt, Catharine Hargens Dahl came as a bride to Stephenson county in 1865. She died in the early 1870's leaving a husband and three small children. They were living near Freeport. Can anyone tell me what Lutheran churches were there at that time and how I might find where to write for their records? We are trying to get more information on this family, because we are getting ready to print a family history. The Dahls came from Schlichting, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany with his parents and siblings. It is my understanding that they all settled in Stephenson. If anyone can help me, I would be happy. Thanks. Karla Nurnberg P.S. I am a descendant of Catherine's brother, Juergen Hinrich Hargens. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I sure hope I'm sending this to the correct place...wasn't sure of the web address: I thought I would pass this on to all those interested in history of Stephenson County. I was recently in Freeport and saw an article in The Journal Standard newspaper. They are taking pre-publication orders for "People and Places of Stephenson County... 100 years of history." The article goes on to state: "The book will feature hundreds of photographs on 128 pages. This treasure chest of memories will include photos from Stephenson County of yesteryear, giving the reader a glimpse of the life in our county for the last 100 years. This book will be edited locally by The Journal-Standard and bound with an attractive hard cover, making it of heirloom quality. The finished product will be available by mid-November 1999, just in time for Christmas giving. You will want a copy not only for yourself, but your loved ones as well. What a great gift idea for those who call Stephenson County their home." The cost is $29.95 for an addition $4 they will mail the book to you. There was an order blank that could be filled out and mailed. For those out of town, you could probably call The Journal Star at (815) 232-1171 or (800) 878-5311 to find out how you can reserve your copy. I have no vested interested in this - just saw the ad and thought I'd pass it on to you. Happy Hunting, Rita Marsh (Peoria, IL)

I apologise for posting this to the list, but I have been unable to find a listing of persons who will do look ups in Stephenson Co. I have a great deal of information on James and Elizabeth Hart, early settlers in Steph.Co., and their children. The parents of Elizabeth, however, remain a mystery. It seems that an obit.or biographical material should be available in Stevenson Co. that would shed some light on this. They came from Ky. and settled in Florence Twp. 3 miles W. of Freeport in 1837. Coming with them, among others, was Elizabeth's Brother, Thomas C. Gatliff. All owned land in Florence Twp. Co. # 89 (Illinois Land Records) Another brother, Reece B. Gatliff was with them as well. Any information would be appreciated, and I am willing to pay any fee.----Ron
