Regarding Steph. Co. cemetery indexes: I have access to vol's 1 & 2, and the Freeport City Cemetery, and JULIA JAMESON WOOTAN is not listed in those indexes. There are volumes 3 & 4, and Ridott Cemetery would be in one of those. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sharon Kafer <slkafer@hotmail.com> To: <ILSTEPHE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 28, 1999 10:56 PM Subject: [ILSTEPHE-L] Julia Jameson Wootan > Does anyone have access to a cemetery book for Stephenson County? Copies of the Winslow Register at the Illinois State Historical Library cover the following years: 1905, My 26-Je23, O 13; 1907, N 29: 1908, Je 26; 1909, Ja 1, D 31; 1910, Ja 7; 1913, Ja 31-Mr 14; 1914, Jl 24, Ag 21 This information is taken from Illinois Libraries "Newspapers in the Illinois State Historical Library" Volume 73 No. 4, April 1991 The local history room at the Freeport Public Library has all of the Winslow Register newspapers mentioned above on microfilm. As you can see, the dates covered by the paper are very sparse. This is probably due to the fact that copies were not maintained by the publisher. Winslow floods quite often. The downtown is oftened under water during periods of high water. It's possible that issues were lost for this reason as well. The local history room also has newspapers on microfilm for the following villages: Davis, Orangeville, German Valley, Orangeville, Pearl City, Lena, Warren (JoDaviess County), and others for villages in neighboring counties. I believe they have the Forreston (Ogle County) newspapers. The Freeport newspapers are numerous -- Banner, Budget/Repbulican, Democrat/Standard, Deutscher Anzeiger, Journal-Standard, Bulletin, Sonntagsblatt. I am sure I haven't named them all. The earliest paper appears to have been printed in 1847. All of these newspapers are microfilmed and available in the local history room of the Freeport Public Library. The names of the newspapers changed often in the late 1800's with many papers ceasing publication or combining with others. To obtain a copy of Illinois Libraries "Newspapers in the Illinois State Historical Library" write to the Illinois State Archives in Springfield. I believe there is a nominal fee for the book. There are no Winslow, Oneco, or Orangeville papers in microfilm at the state lib., but there are Lena papers on microfilm. They are as follows--Northwestern Illinois Farmer: Star(weekly)[*Ja 4, 1867-O29,1908X]; (semi-weekly) [*N 3, 1908-My 7, 1909X]; (weekly0 [My 13, 1910-S 26, 1957X];Stephenson Farmer *O3-D 26, 1957, Jl 1961-D 31, 1964; Ja 7, 1965; Northwestern Illinois Farmer, [Ap 27, 1967+] The * means the 1st issue of the series, the X means the last issue of the series. The + means that the file is continuing to date, and new issues are being received regularly. Apparently this was one newspaper, just changing names and publishers over the years. I'm sure those other towns had newspapers-- they just didn't get on microfilm. Mary Vivian
The book in question was issued to each public library in the state of IL (or at least in our library system), and should be available to look at in any public library in the state. There is no online listing as far as I know of, but there may be a way to order them electronically. In any case, a librarian would have to access the microfilm for you, and the microfilm would have to be used in the library that borrowed it--in other words, if the Freeport Public Library borrows it, you would have to use the microfilm in one of the Freeport Public Library's machines. We have the book, and I would be able to look up what the holdings would be for a particular town or area. Beyond that, I might be able to help further depending on the circumstances. Thank you for the help......I believe there was a flood and a fire in the town of Winslow around 1903......and perhaps between those two calamities the Winslow Register and its archives may have been destroyed.... does anybody online have information on the Winslow Register from Winslow, Illinois? Mick Rybolt
Could you check the book and see if you have any newspapers in Illinois.....Stephenson County..... the towns I am interested in would be Winslow, Oneco, Lena, Orangeville..... I believe there was at one time a Winslow Register and I believe there was also a Lena Star.... Thanks for your help.....I await your response...... Mick AutoMick@aol.com
I also am interested in knowing how to get listing of newspapers that are on file......are they online with a source to check what is available, or is there a book we can check out..... Mick AutoMick@aol.com
