    2. Jim, Just a thought and I am not conversant with languages. But, back in the era you are working I believe you may bump into some of the idiosyncrasies of "High" and "Low" German. My grandparents one born in Belleville in the 1880's and the other born in 1890 in Western Missouri both spoke Low German or a combination of whatever when they didn't want their children to hear the conversation. One of my uncles studied German in High School and after bouncing his head against the wall for a couple of years, he still couldn't understand them. Sorta like the 50 years ago when it was difficult for some of us Yankees to understand the Floridians until we overpowered the population.
