Thanks to all of you who helped answer my questions! BTW, the book I'm reading is SHAMAN, by Noah Gordon. It is set mostly in Rock Island, IL, but mentions St. Clair Co and Belleville -- not that I knew that when I bought it at the local library's used book sale --- a quarter well-spent. :) Jane
