My ancestors Timothy McCarthy and his wife, Julia O'Leary McCarthy, arrived in New Orleans on the Courtenay on November 16, 1849. They were accompanied by her brother, Daniel O'Leary married to Catherine Mulquinn, and the various children of both families. They are in Monroe County for the 1850 census. Various of their family lived in St. Clair and Monroe counties. We know nothing of how they would have gotten up the river. Family oral tradition says they were met at the dock in East St. Louis by her other brother. Any information about how they got upriver, or the Irish settlement of East St. Louis would be appreciated. Candace McCarthy King
