    1. [ILSTCLAI] Re: Koesterer & Reicherts
    2. Karen, Here is a paragraph from an article (which is about two pages long) I picked up several years ago, from somewhere. I have no idea who wrote it. It's title is, THE ARRIVAL OF PHILLIP J. KOESTERER IN THE UNITED STATES--1847 “It is not known on what kind of steamboat the Koesterers and Reicherts traveled from New Orleans to St. Louis. None of the boats, however, provided good accommodations. Most typical of the boats on which the immigrants traveled was one described by John James Audabon, inadequate washing facilities, scanty bed sheets, pillows filled with corn husks, and a leaky roof’. This was describing the accommodations for cabin passengers. Many immigrants traveled as deck passengers. These were provided only with transportation, no bed, no food, no toilet facilities, no shelter except the deck overhead. As many were taken aboard as could pay, regardless of space. The deck passengers diet was whatever they could bring aboard, usually sausage, fried herring, cheese and crackers. The difference between deck and cabin passengers was reflected in the fares. In the 1840s cabin passage from New Orleans to St. Louis was about $15 for a trip that took four days. In that same period, deck passage fell to as low as $3."
