    3. List Illinois' German Heritage is now available from the St. Clair County *Historical* Society. Author Don Heinrich Tolzmann states in his Introduction that one of the reasons German-Americans have been overlooked in Illinois is that much of the source material is in German. His book helps remedy this situation by translating from German material written by Gustav Koerner in Das deutsche Element in den Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika, 1818-1848 (German immigration and settlement in southern and central Illinois), and Andrew Jacke Townsend's work on Chicago's development as a major German-American urban center in the state. Chapters four through six focus on three Germans of major importance in Illinois - Friedrich Hecker, Francis A. Hoffmann, and Gustav Koerner. The final chapter provides a survey of Illinois Germans to bring the history up to the present. Heavily footnoted and source cited, 190 pages. $18.00 ppd from the St. Clair County Historical Society, 701 East Washington Street, Belleville, Illinois 62220. (Earmark for Koerner House).
