Are the Deed Books for the county still at the courthouse or have the books been moved to Carbondale. I need to look at deed books and am wondering if a visit to Carbondale would better serve my purposes than the courthouse in Belleville. How would I find the present day location of a piece of property in New Athens. The property is described as the South half of the southeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section 33 township 2 S range 7 west of the 3 principle meridian. Any help is greatly appreciated. Microfilm of the St Clair county deed books are at the courthouse (1790-mid 1900s) with the most recent ones in paper form. Books through D - Z (to about 1858 or so) should be at Carbondale but they will have you use the microfilm first because the books are in dire shape. You need the grantor or grantee name, not the description, to locate the deed in the respective book, however. If all you need is the present day location of the property described below, you would probably be better off with the St. Clair County Plat book The Belleville Library has some but I'm not sure if they have the current year. The St. Clair County Farm Bureau, 1478 E. State Route 15, Belleville 62222 ph (618) 233-6800 sells these plat books pubished yearly for a few dollars - I don't have a current price so check with them if interested. The books list owners by section, township, and range and provide a plat for each township. Diane -----
Diane, Thanks for the information. I have the grantee and grantor names as well as the description.
