To find out if your ancestor/anybody was the recipient of a donation land claim, go to: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/patentSearch/ And type in their name. When the name comes up, see where it says "Printer Friendly"...click on that and print out the description of the DLC. THEN, go to: http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/index.htm Instead of the above URL try this one- http://www.esg.montana.edu/ And, type in the Township, Range and Section...and a GREAT description will come up so you can find it...you can even click on the maps that will give you honest to goodness Satellite pictures of the land. The site is a nice source of maps, but as far as I can tell the function described -- going from written legal description to a detailed map -- only works for 17 western states, not Illinois!
