Edna, I have GODFREY as a family name in St. Clair Co., with the earliest ancestor Jean Florin GODFREY, reportedly born in Loraine, France between 1812-1815 (1860 St. Clair Co. Census). He was married to Florence Marie COROMBER. I, too, have had little luck going further back, but do know from travels in France that the name GODFROI/GODFROIX appears there. (A son of Jean Florin GODFREY, August may have been born in the US - we have conflicting evidence on this - but his marriage in French Village, St. Clair Co., in 1868, was under the name GODFROI.)
